In this paper, a bridgeless buck PFC structure is presented. To Fulfill soft switching for the main switches an auxiliary circuitry is utilized. The main switches of the proposed structure operate under ZVS condition and the auxiliary switch operate under ZCS condition. The introduced topology operates at Discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) leading to intrinsic PFC capability. A 120 W, 100 kHz prototype is designed and simulated to validate theoretical analysis using PSIM software. The results show 97% efficiency and fully soft switching operation. © 2025 IEEE.

With the increasing demand for channel capacity, higher data rate, and wider bandwidth for wireless communication and sensing, the focus of millimeter-wave (mmWave) technology development is moving toward higher frequencies. For example, the 5G standard maps the frequency range 2 (FR2) bands into 24.25–52.6 GHz to satisfy the need for higher bandwidth, while the upcoming 6G communications is considering W-band (75–110 GHz), D-band (110–170 GHz), and even G-band (110–300 GHz) as the targeted operating frequencies. This evolution is driving mmWave systems toward the miniaturization of devices and components. This trend advocates the need for integrating compact passive and active components into the package, leading to complex heterogeneous integration platforms. © 2000-2012 IEEE.

Active Voltage Balancing of Series-Connected SiC MOSFETs During Body-Diode Turn-Off Using an Active Gate Driver

The series connection of fast-switching SiC MOSFETs presents a promising approach to enhance the efficiency, compactness, and simplicity of Medium Voltage (MV) power converters. However, managing voltage imbalances during the turn-off of MOSFETs and their body diodes introduces significant challenges. While existing literature covers passive and active voltage balancing strategies for switch turn-off (e.g., MOSFETs/IGBTs), the issue of uneven voltage distribution during body diode turn-off remains largely unexplored. This gap limits the widespread adoption of series-connected devices in MV power converters, as achieving reliable performance with minimal additional components and low switching losses remains difficult. This article presents an Active Voltage Balancing technique for handling body diode turn-off events by regulating the gate charge of parallel MOSFETs during voltage rise transients in the closedloop using Active Gate Drivers (AGD). This approach ensures uniform voltage distribution among the body diodes of seriesconnected MOSFETs. A comprehensive analysis and modelling of gate charge control during voltage transients is presented. The proposed method is experimentally validated on two seriesconnected SiC MOSFETs operating in buck mode (DC-DC) and half-bridge inverter mode (DC-AC) at a 1.5 kV DC bus voltage, with switching frequencies up to 40 kHz. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

On Shaping Gain of Multidimensional Constellations in Linear and Nonlinear Optical Fiber Channel

Utilizing the multi-dimensional (MD) space for constellation shaping has been proven to be an effective approach for achieving shaping gains. Despite there exists a variety of MD modulation formats tailored for specific optical transmission scenarios, there remains a notable absence of a dependable comparison method for efficiently and promptly re-evaluating their performance in arbitrary transmission systems. In this paper, we introduce an analytical nonlinear interference (NLI) power model-based shaping gain estimation method to enable a fast performance evaluation of various MD modulation formats in coherent dual-polarization (DP) optical transmission system. In order to extend the applicability of this method to a broader set of modulation formats, we extend the established NLI model to take the 4D joint distribution into account and thus able to analyze the complex interactions of non-iid signaling in DP systems. With the help of the NLI model, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of the state-of-the-art modulation formats and investigate their actual shaping gains in two types of optical fiber communication scenarios (multi-span and single-span). The numerical simulation shows that for arbitrary modulation formats, the NLI power and relative shaping gains in terms of signal-to-noise ratio can be more accurately estimated by capturing the statistics of MD symbols. Furthermore, the proposed method further validates the effectiveness of the reported NLI-tolerant modulation format in the literature, which reveals that the linear shaping gains and modulation-dependent NLI should be jointly considered for nonlinearity mitigation. © 1983-2012 IEEE.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected millions of people globally, with respiratory organs being strongly affected in individuals with comorbidities. Medical imaging-based diagnosis and prognosis have become increasingly popular in clinical settings for detecting COVID-19 lung infections. Among various medical imaging modalities, ultrasound stands out as a low-cost, mobile, and radiation-safe imaging technology. In this comprehensive review, we focus on AI-driven studies utilizing lung ultrasound (LUS) for COVID-19 detection and analysis. We provide a detailed overview of both publicly available and private LUS datasets and categorize the AI studies according to the dataset they used. Additionally, we systematically analyzed and tabulated the studies across various dimensions, including data preprocessing methods, AI models, cross-validation techniques, and evaluation metrics. In total, we reviewed 60 articles, 41 of which utilized public datasets, while the remaining employed private data. Our findings suggest that ultrasound-based AI studies for COVID-19 detection have great potential for clinical use, especially for children and pregnant women. Our review also provides a useful summary for future researchers and clinicians who may be interested in the field. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

A Comprehensive Study on Ziv-Zakai Lower Bounds on the MMSE

This paper explores Bayesian lower bounds on the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) that belong to the well-known Ziv-Zakai family. The Ziv-Zakai technique relies on connecting the bound to an M-ary hypothesis testing problem. There are three versions of the Ziv-Zakai bound (ZZB): the first version relies on the so-called valley-filling function, the second one is a relaxation of the first bound which omits the valley-filling function, and the third one, namely the single-point ZZB (SZZB), replaces the integration present in the first two bounds with a single point maximization. The first part of this paper focuses on providing the most general version of the bounds. It is shown that these bounds hold without any assumption on the distribution of the estimand. This makes the bounds applicable to discrete and mixed distributions. Then, the SZZB is extended to an M-ary setting and a version of it that holds for the multivariate setting is provided. In the second part, general properties of these bounds are provided. First, unlike the Bayesian Cramér-Rao bound, it is shown that all the versions of the ZZB tensorize. Second, a characterization of the high-noise asymptotic is provided, which is used to argue about the tightness of the bounds. Third, a complete low-noise asymptotic is provided under the assumptions of mixed-input distributions and Gaussian additive noise channels. In the low-noise, it is shown that the ZZB is generally tight, but there are examples for which the SZZB is not tight. In the third part, the tightness of the bounds is evaluated. First, it is shown that in the low-noise regime the ZZB without the valley-filling function, and, therefore, also the ZZB with the valley-filling function, are tight for mixed-input distributions and Gaussian additive noise channels. Second, for discrete inputs it is shown that the ZZB with the valley-filling function is always sub-optimal, and equal to zero without the valley-filling function. Third, unlike for the ZZB

Highly sensitive optical biosensor based on electromagnetically induced transparency in a graphene-dielectric metasurface

In this paper, a graphene-dielectric metasurface is proposed for effective optical biosensing. The structure is composed of a periodic array of double-slit split-ring resonators (SRRs) adjacent to silicon bars over a sheet of graphene and silicon dioxide substrate. Interactions between electric dipoles (bright modes) in silicon bars and magnetic dipoles (dark modes) excited in SRRs lead to a high quality factor resonance based on the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). High electric field confinement is achieved within the two gaps of SRRs at the resonance frequency, which result in strong light-analyte interaction. The structural parameters of the proposed metasurface are optimized to achieve the best performance. The biosensor is analyzed using the finite-element method (FEM) and the results are presented. Owing to the high Q-factor EIT resonance and the enhanced light-matter interaction inside the gaps, a high sensitivity of 496 nm/RIU and figure-of-merit (FOM) of as high as 741 RIU−1 are achieved that are higher than those reported in recently published works. The resolution and the linearity R2 value of the proposed biosensor are calculated to be 2.02e-4 and 0.999, respectively. The reported characteristics could be promising for sensing of various biomolecules such as hemoglobin. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Dynamic Modeling and Analysis for Electricity-Gas Systems With Electric-Driven Compressors

The dynamic gas flow model with static electric driven compressor (EDC) model has been widely studied in coordinated analysis of integrated electricity-gas system (IEGS). However, as a crucial coupling unit, the boost characteristics of the EDC change dynamically with gas state, which may lead to unstable operation mode and then affect safe operating of IEGS. Meanwhile, its nonlinear model greatly increases the difficulty of analysis. This paper proposes a reduced-order transfer function model that considers EDCs for an accurate and efficient dynamic analysis of the IEGS. Firstly, a general two-port model in the Laplace-domain is derived to jointly analyze the pipeline and EDCs dynamic characteristics. The model based on transfer function, explicitly gives the relation between the pressures and flows state at ports. On this basis, to concisely analyze state variations of crucial nodes, the multiple cascaded pipelines and compressors are aggregated and to form an equivalent model. Meanwhile, to reduce the computational burden of the high-order Laplacian "s" in the aggregated process, a reduced-order method is developed based on Jordan continued-fraction expansion by preserving the main gas dynamic feature. Then the analytical expression of state fluctuation can be conveniently derived to analyze the underlying impact and interaction between power system and gas system. Finally, case studies are conducted to prove the effectiveness of proposed model and reduction method. © 2010-2012 IEEE.

Close Quarters Permittivity Detection Based on Tagging Antenna Sensor for Solid Material Characterization

This research proposes a tagging antenna sensor for permittivity detection of solid materials based on a close quarter approach. The sensor is proposed to operate at a frequency of 2.53 GHz using a single port resonator with a reflection coefficient (S11) ≤ −10 dB. The sample is placed directly in the sensing area of the antenna sensor based on the concentration of the electric field. Permittivity detection is proposed based on the resonant frequency shift of the transmission coefficient (S21) using interrogator antennas separated by a distance of (d) = 100 mm determined using the Fresnel region. Based on the measurement results, the antenna sensor has a high accuracy of 96% while the sensitivity and ∆F are 0.39% and 0.012 GHz, respectively. Moreover, the sensitivity ofthe proposed sensor is still low due the low concentration of the electric field. Therefore, increasing the sensitivity of the antenna sensor can be recommended as further work such as combining the structure of single port resonator with another structure such as interdigital capacitor and artificial magnetic conductor (AMC). Finally, this research makes a significant contribution to the permittivity detection of solid materials with a close quarter approach to support real time and flexible measurements and can be recommended for several applications for the biomedical, pharmaceutical, and material quality control industries. © 2025, Electromagnetics Academy.
