Rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) installations play a crucial role in advancing PV penetration within distribution systems. Solar plants on rooftops, particularly those without energy storage, emerge as a cost-effective alternative when compared to conventional fossil fuel-based generation. However, as the proportion of solar PV within a distribution system increases, concerns about voltage swelling arise, especially under lightly loaded conditions. This issue becomes more pronounced in underground cable-based distribution systems due to their high R/X ratio, potentially leading to the curtailment of solar PV *** this work, we developed an IEEE 33-bus distribution system in MATLAB to assess the maximum allowable rooftop PV penetration without violating voltage limits. The same IEEE 33-bus network was then modified into a cable-based distribution system to investigate voltage swelling effects. In a comparative analysis between cable-based and overhead-based IEEE 33 bus systems, we found that the maximum allowable rooftop PV penetration is lower in cable-based networks. Simulation results suggest that blindly increasing rooftop PV penetration in a metropolitan cable-based system may lead to voltage instability. Careful planning is essential to ensure the sustainable integration of PV systems without compromising network stability. © 2024 IEEE.

Nagaoka ferromagnetism in doped Hubbard models in optical lattices

The search for ferromagnetism in the Hubbard model has been a problem of outstanding interest since Nagaoka's original proposal in 1966. Recent advances in quantum simulation have today enabled the study of tunable doped Hubbard models in ultracold atomic systems. Employing large-scale density-matrix renormalization group calculations, we establish the existence of high-spin ground states of the Hubbard model on finite-sized triangular lattices, analyze the microscopic mechanisms behind their origin, and investigate the interplay between ferromagnetism and other competing orders, such as stripes. These results explain (and shed light on) the intriguing observations of ferromagnetic correlations in recent optical-lattice experiments. Additionally, we examine a generalized variant of the Hubbard model, wherein any second electron on a single lattice site is weakly bound compared to the first one, and demonstrate how this modification can lead to enhanced ferromagnetism, at intermediate lengthscales, on the nonfrustrated square lattice as well.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected millions of people globally, with respiratory organs being strongly affected in individuals with comorbidities. Medical imaging-based diagnosis and prognosis have become increasingly popular in clinical settings for detecting COVID-19 lung infections. Among various medical imaging modalities, ultrasound stands out as a low-cost, mobile, and radiation-safe imaging technology. In this comprehensive review, we focus on AI-driven studies utilizing lung ultrasound (LUS) for COVID-19 detection and analysis. We provide a detailed overview of both publicly available and private LUS datasets and categorize the AI studies according to the dataset they used. Additionally, we systematically analyzed and tabulated the studies across various dimensions, including data preprocessing methods, AI models, cross-validation techniques, and evaluation metrics. In total, we reviewed 60 articles, 41 of which utilized public datasets, while the remaining employed private data. Our findings suggest that ultrasound-based AI studies for COVID-19 detection have great potential for clinical use, especially for children and pregnant women. Our review also provides a useful summary for future researchers and clinicians who may be interested in the field. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

This paper proposes a self adaptive physics informed neural network (SAPINN) model to predict the degree of polymerization (DP) of oil-impregnated paper insulation to quantify the level of degradation and the remaining useful lifetime. The prediction is performed based on historical DP values and the corresponding prediction time step, which are used as input data points to the proposed model. The DP mathematical model is used to constrain the training phase of the AI-model through a weighted sum loss function. The weights of this loss function are adjusted for each epoch through a self-adaptive weighting method to determine the relative importance of the data component and the mathematical model throughout the training by defining these weights as trainable parameters. The trained model is then tested using different datasets which are not part of the training phase. The training and testing datasets are generated synthetically through an algorithm that considers the deviation from the ideal DP degradation curve and incorporates actual measurement noise. The performance of the proposed SAPINN is compared to the baseline PINN and NN (in the absence of physics) to highlight the importance of embedding the mathematical model and the self adaptation algorithm, and theses experiments demonstrate that SAPINN significantly enhances the DP prediction. © 2024 IEEE.

In the case of standalone houses, ensuring a continuous and regulated power supply from renewable sources is crucial. To address their unpredictable nature, an environmentally conscious hybrid renewable energy system combining photovoltaic panels, a battery, and a Diesel generator is considered. A software application simulates the power flow in a standalone house with common AC loads, analysing summer and winter scenarios over 24 hours. The strategy employed provides an optimal energy management by using the Diesel generator only during peak demand when PV is available and to cover loads and maintain battery life when PV is not in operation. The simulation results provide valuable insights for designing such hybrid energy systems and for enhancing system responsiveness to dynamic energy demands.

The electronics panels and controllers used in electric vehicle (EV) charging stations need to function securely and optimally in countries such as India, where the external temperature remains high for a significant part of the year. This study is the first to use a solar-battery storage integrated switchable glazing architecture to supply HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) in the control rooms of electric vehicle charging stations throughout the day. The EV charging station has been equipped with a rooftop-mounted solar PV source as part of an initiative to promote renewable energy and sustainable forms of mobility. The utilization of a vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) by the system ensures energy security through the provision of a durable solution for storing energy over an extended period of time. A smart scheduling system utilizing IoT technology was demonstrated to effectively meet the glazing load need of buildings in real-time, taking into account dynamic climatic conditions. This system incorporates solar PV, VRFB storage, and the neighborhood power grid. The efficiency of the suggested method was validated using four separate transitory scenarios: sunny, intermittently cloudy, prolongedly cloudy, and low solar radiation with frequent grid outages. Due to its versatility to be applied in various situations, the suggested method has the potential to greatly enhance capacity. © (2024), (International Association of Engineers). In this paper, an application of a 1D deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) and 4x4 1D DCNN Multi-channel Model (DCNN-MCM) was developed to predict the probability of a channel being associated with a given transmitter for each emitter in a 4x4 multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system. Counterintuitively, compared to the traditional approach to emitter association (EA), this research argues for the identification of received RF signals based on channel features (CFs) such as the channel impulse response (CIR) and transfer function (TF). Based on the CFs there are unique properties per transmit and receive pair that can be used to identify the different transmitters. More specifically, CFs are often defined by a wide sense stationary (WSS) stochastic process which gives them unique properties such as, being statistically independent and reciprocal for emitter association. Given these CFs, the received RF signals can be used to measure the clutter and objects surrounding the emitters. Safely assuming the surrounding clutter and objects are unique to each emitter, the estimation and tracking of this clutter provides a way of identifying what emitter is transmitting the observed signal. This method successfully classifies and identifies the emitters at 97.22% and 88.89% accuracy for the DCNN and DCNN-MCM respectively. This method was further compared with the accuracy of previous methods to test the validity of the approach and future improvements. © 2025 IEEE.
