Partial Discharges (PDs) are a common source of degradation in electrical assets. It is essential that the extent of the deterioration level of insulating medium is correctly identified, to optimize maintenance schedules and prevent abrupt power outages. Temporal PD signals received from damaged insulation, collected through the IEC-60270 method is the gold standard for PD detection. Temporal signals may be transformed to the frequency domain, introducing new spectral features that may be beneficial in certain circumstances. Consequently, time delays are introduced, due to the high utilization of computational resources within the signal processing pipeline. Moreover, some microprocessors struggle with the excess computational burden demanded by resource-heavy mathematical transformations. To rectify these issues, an alternative approach is utilized, where Machine learning (ML) algorithms are directly used for the classification of PD severity. Cylindrically-shaped air cavities with lengths ranging from 1mm-6mm are introduced to a resin-based polyethylene terephthalate (PET) insulation material. The cavities are partitioned based on size, to obtain different classes of PD severity. A comparative analysis is performed on various ML algorithms, to determine which algorithm correctly determined the severity of PDs, with highest efficacy. Random Forest was determined to be the most performant, with an accuracy of 98.33%. The high performance illustrates the model's potential success in accurately determining the hazard level of PDs in real-time, based on merely time-domain signals. © 2024 IEEE.

Haze-induced image degradation in outdoor scenes, caused by atmospheric scattering and absorption, poses significant challenges for applications such as surveillance, autonomous navigation, and remote sensing. This research focuses on improving image dehazing by enhancing two key components: Dark Channel Prior (DCP) and Atmospheric Light Estimation (ALE). DCP exploits the statistical property that haze-free regions exhibit low minimum intensity values, aiding in accurate haze detection. ALE estimates atmospheric light from distant, less-scattered sources, ensuring precise haze removal. To further enhance dehazing performance, this study introduces a Minimum Fusion Technique, which selects the minimum intensity value for each pixel across multiple dehazed outputs, effectively preserving fine details and reducing artifacts. The proposed method is evaluated on the SOTS Outdoor dataset from the RESIDE benchmark, comprising 500 pairs of real-world hazy and clear images. By integrating optimized DCP, ALE, and the Minimum Fusion Technique, the approach achieves superior performance with a PSNR of 35.45 dB and an SSIM of 0.97, outperforming existing methods such as Scene-Specific DCP, TON, and FFA_NET. Additionally, it demonstrates reduced execution time and enhanced visual quality, making it a more efficient and reliable solution for real-world dehazing applications. These improvements establish the proposed method as a state-of-the-art approach for restoring clarity in outdoor images, contributing to more effective and accurate image reconstruction in challenging environments. © 2013 IEEE.

Dyadic physiological responses are correlated with the quality of interpersonal processes - for example, the degree of "connectedness"in education and mental health counseling. Pattern recognition algorithms could be applied to such dyadic responses to identify the states of specific dyads, but such pattern recognition has primarily focused on classification. This paper instead uses regression algorithms to estimate three conversation aspects (valence, arousal, balance) from heart rate, skin conductance, respiration, and skin temperature. Data were collected from 35 dyads who engaged in 20 minutes of conversation, divided into 10 two-minute intervals. Each interval was rated with regard to conversation valence, arousal, and balance by an observer. When regression algorithms (support vector machines and Gaussian process regression) were trained on other data from the same dyad, they were able to estimate valence, arousal and balance with lower errors than a simple baseline estimator. However, when algorithms were trained on data from other dyads, errors were not lower than those of the baseline estimator. Overall, results indicate that, as long as training data from the same dyad are available, autonomic nervous system responses can be combined with regression algorithms to estimate multiple dyadic conversation aspects with some accuracy. This has applications in education and mental health counseling, though fundamental issues remain to be addressed before the technology is used in practice. © 2024 IEEE.

The subject of this paper concerns the design and optimization of a helical open waveguide structure for thermal tumor ablation with microwaves, a treatment also known as MicroWave Ablation (MWA). A variety of antennas for MWA have been developed so far. However, most of these antennas cannot accurately control the temperature field they produce. As a result, the heating extends to healthy tissues as well. Therefore, the first innovation proposed here is to use a helical open waveguide structure that will control the distribution of the deposited electromagnetic power and achieve the total destruction of the tumor, with less damage to the surrounding healthy tissue ('healthy tissue sparing'). By changing the distance of the spirals of the helix, we are able to limit the field to the dimensions of the cancerous tumor. An antenna for MWA is usually designed for specific physical and geometrical parameters of the problem which determine its input impedance, resonant frequency and operating bandwidth. However, a MWA antenna should be able to be used within different tissues. The second innovation of the present research proposal is the construction of an open helical waveguide structure, which can adapt to the complex load presented by the tissue where the waveguide enters. This will be achieved, on the one hand with the dimensions of the helix spirals which will be changed by rotary motion, and on the other hand with a transformer made of coaxial cable preceding the waveguide. Finally, a parametric analysis of the construction is performed by changing the number and height of the spirals to see which structure produces the best results (more uniform temperature distribution with less damage to the surrounding tissue) but also by changing the length of its monopole. © 2024 IEEE.

Enhancing in-field performance of GdBCO coated conductors by cooperative irradiation with Ti ions and protons

Irradiation can accurately manipulate defects and adjust pinning landscapes within REBa_(2)Cu_(3)O_(7-δ) (REBCO, RE: rare earths) coated conductors (CCs). This study reports a productive method to dramatically boost the in-field critical current density (J_(c) ) for GdBCO CCs using cooperative irradiation with Ti ions and protons. Remarkably, the in-field J_(c) of commercial CCs can be almost doubled at a wide range of temperatures and magnetic fields. Defects of various sizes induced by cooperative irradiation are more uniform distribution through the entire GdBCO film to improve the vortex pinning characteristics, thereby enhancing the in-field performance of the GdBCO CC. This method highlights how combining different particle irradiation types can tailor defect size and distribution, optimizing pinning landscapes for commercial REBCO CCs.

Environmental and other stresses are constantly affecting photovoltaic (PV) components which can end in various faults. The anomalous condition can reduce the PV output power or even result in a calamitous fire hazard. Hence, PV systems must be monitored constantly in order to ensure their proper performance. This paper proposes an intelligent PV condition monitoring scheme based on Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). This scheme monitors the PV performance and detects different faults and failures on the DC-side of the array. It also takes advantage of Human-Machine Interface (HMI) which provides the operators with useful real-time data from the array. © 2024 IEEE.
