We present an integrated circuit, based on nonlinear transmission lines (NLTL), for network analysis within 70-200 GHz. This is the first integrated circuit containing all elements of a S-Parameter test set: A multiplier to generate the RF signal, couplers to separate the incident and reflected waves, and a pair of high speed sampling circuits for down-converting the signals to lower frequencies.

His experience also includes applications of optimization fuzzy logic neural network and genetic algorithm methods to engineering system design Mr. William Schmidt:co-founded Angle Incorporated in 1990 and has served as Vice PresidentlChiefScientist during this tame. He holds a B.Sc. in Applied Science from the Naval Acadt?my and an M.Sc. in Physics from the Naval Post Graduate School. He has cner 20 years experience in technical leadership material and personnel management. He has led the application of computer aided design (CAD) and Product Model Information Exchange to the shipbuilding industry. Ship design is often multidisciplinary involving several design elements with various types of objectives and constraints (O/C) some easily described as mathematical formulas, others better modeled as descriptive assertions. This paper describes a method based on fuzzy functions and an integrated performance index to model O/C using descriptive assertions to be used with mathematical formulas in optimization. Another issue addressed in this paper concerns the coordination of design elements when sequentially coupled, that is, when one leads the other and the performance of the follower depends greatly on the design of the leader. Based on neuro-fuzzy techniques, the method described here coordinates and optimizes sequentially coupled elements. The two methods are applied to machinery arrangement (MA) and pipe routing (PR). Preliminary models for optimization of MA and PR are described considering convenience, producibility: engine room size, interference and location as factors in the O/C set. Some test results from MA/PR applications are presented and discussed. The methods are generic and can be extended to other elements in ship design. They are mutually independent and may be used separately Two advantages of their use are an improvement in overall performance and a reduction in the need for redesign of elements.

A diagnosis method for single logic design errors in gate-level combinational circuits

This paper proposes a method for diagnosing logic design errors in gate-level combinational circuits, and discusses how to correct them. Some previously proposed design error models are explained at gate-level. This diagnosis method includes the vector pair analysis that has been developed for test pattern generation and fault diagnosis for multiple stuck-at faults. In vector pair analysis, logic values due to design errors are regarded as logic values caused by stuck-at faults and its results give some information on how to correct the design errors. However, since diagnosis using vector pair analysis cannot be applied to missing lines, their diagnosis uses another method based on the analysis of controlling values for input vectors with incorrect output responses. We also propose another diagnosis method for locating design errors in smaller areas, by the vector pair analysis. The experimental results for ISCAS'85 benchmark circuits show that the proposed method is effective for single design errors. © 1997 Scripta Technica, Inc. Syst Comp Jpn, 28(6): 30–39, 1997

Coupled acoustic mode propagation through continental-shelf internal solitary waves

Three techniques are used to investigate mode coupling as acoustic energy passes through continental-shelf internal solitary waves (ISW's), Results from all techniques agree, The waves considered here are single downward undulations of a thermocline layer separating upper and lower well-mixed layers, Two techniques are numerical: parabolic equation (PE) solution and a sudden approximation joining range-invariant regions at sharp vertical interfaces, The third technique Is an analytic derivation of ISW scale lengths separating adiabatic (at large scale) and coupled-mode propagation, Results show that energy is exchanged between modes as ISW's are traversed, The sharp interface solutions help explain this in terms of spatially confined coupling and modal phase interference, Three regimes are observed: 1) for short ISW's, coupling upon wave entrance is reversed upon exit, with no net coupling;2) for ISW scales of 75-200 m, modal phase alteration averts the exit reversal, giving net coupling;transparent resonances yielding no net coupling are also observed in this regime;and 3) for long ISW's, adiabaticity is probable but not universal, Mode refraction analysis for nonparallel acoustic-ISW alignment suggests that these two-dimensional techniques remain valid for 0 degrees (parallel) to 65 degrees (oblique) incidence, with an accordant ISW stretching.

A high-resolution time-frequency distribution is applied to the study of violin vibrato. Our analysis indicates that the frequency modulation induced by the motion of the stopped finger on the string is accompanied by a significant amplitude variation in each partial of that note. We suggest that this amplitude modulation results from the densely-spaced wood resonances of the violin body. Amplitude and frequency estimates for each partial are extracted from the time-frequency surface and used in an additive resynthesis model to generate synthesized violin vibrato. © 1997 International computer Music Conference, ICMC Proceedings. Microwave interferometry was used to investigate the impact of the plume of a D-55 anode layer thruster on satellite communications. A 17 GHz microwave signal was transmitted through the plume in order to measure phase shift and signal attenuation at various axial positions and discharge voltages. At 0.25 m from the thruster exit plane, a centerline phase shift of 37° was measured with a half-angle at full width half maximum of 22° for the nominal 300 V discharge. At 1.00 m, the phase shift had decreased to 20° and the half-angle to 13.5°. Signal attenuation measurements showed attenuations of -1.0 dB to -1.4 dB near centerline, but in a double peaked structure that appeared to reflect the annular nature of the plume. Increasing the discharge voltage had no measurable effect on either the phase shift or signal attenuation. Electron number density distributions were calculated by Abel inverting the signal phase shift. For the 300 V discharge, the centerline number density decreased from 1.0*1011 cm-3 at 0.25 m to 2.1*1010 cm-3 at 1.00 m. Analysis of the distributions indicates that electrons are not focused by increasing discharge voltage. © 1997 by Frank S. Gulczinski III.

It has been shown previously that a logic circuit often contains a large number of logical paths that need not be tested to verify the timing behavior of the circuit, if the other paths are robustly tested. These paths are called robust dependent. A subset of the robust dependent paths are the functionally unsensitizable paths. This paper proposes a method for efficiently identifying both types of paths. The proposed procedure uses local circuit analysis to keep the run time relatively low, and relatively independent of the number of paths in the circuit. The method may not identify all the paths that are robust dependent or functionally unsensitizable, however, experimental results show that the numbers it finds are comparable, and sometimes even higher than those found by other methods. The procedure can be applied to circuits that cannot be handled by other methods.

The antipode of a sequential computer, using a single CPU to execute the tasks, is a massively parallel processor containing large numbers of computing nodes. Supplemental to the shared and distributed memory organizations are the distributed-shared systems, allowing nodes to explore a single globally shared address space. A different vision is introduced concerning the prospects of an optically coupled version of such a system. In each cluster, an electrical crossbar looks after the interconnections between the nodes, the various memory modules and external I/O channels. The clusters are optically coupled through a free space oriented data distributing system. Analogies found in the design of the Convex SPP1000 validate the closeness to reality of such an architecture. An idealized picture of the fundamental properties of an optically based, fully connected distributed (virtual) shared memory architecture is outlined.
