Transformer-based foundation models have become crucial for various domains, most notably natural language processing (NLP) or computer vision (CV). These models are predominantly deployed on high-performance GPUs or hardwired accelerators with highly customized, proprietary instruction sets. Until now, limited attention has been given to RISC-V-based general-purpose platforms. In our work, we present the first inference results of transformer models on an open-source many-tiny-core RISC-V platform implementing distributed Softmax primitives and leveraging ISA extensions for SIMD floating-point operand streaming and instruction repetition, as well as specialized DMA engines to minimize costly main memory accesses and to tolerate their latency. We focus on two foundational transformer topologies, encoder-only and decoder-only models. For encoder-only models, we demonstrate a speedup of up to 12.8 $\times$ between the most optimized implementation and the baseline version. We reach over 79% FPU utilization and 294 GFLOPS/W, outperforming State-of-the-Art (SoA) accelerators by more than 2 $\times$ utilizing the HW platform while achieving comparable throughput per computational unit. For decoder-only topologies, we achieve 16.1 $\times$ speedup in the Non-Autoregressive (NAR) mode and up to 35.6 $\times$ speedup in the Autoregressive (AR) mode compared to the baseline implementation. Compared to the best SoA dedicated accelerator, we achieve 2.04 $\times$ higher FPU utilization.

Time series have numerous applications in finance, healthcare, IoT, and smart city. In many of these applications, time series typically contain personal data, so privacy infringement may occur if they are released directly to the public. Recently, local differential privacy (LDP) has emerged as the state-of-the-art approach to protecting data privacy. However, existing works on LDP-based collections cannot preserve the shape of time series. A recent work, PatternLDP, attempts to address this problem, but it can only protect a finite group of elements in a time series due to ω-event level privacy guarantee. In this paper, we propose PrivShape, a trie-based mechanism under user-level LDP to protect all elements. PrivShape first transforms a time series to reduce its length, and then adopts trie-expansion and two-level refinement to improve utility. By extensive experiments on real-world datasets, we demonstrate that PrivShape outperforms PatternLDP when adapted for offline use, and can effectively extract frequent shapes.

Hand hygiene (HH) is one of the most important activities of protection against pandemic disease in the current difficult situation around the world. To achieve this, World Health Organization (WHO) recommends frequent hand washing with soap and hand sanitization using hand sanitizers. Hand sanitizers are generally applied by squirting the sanitizer liquid by hand and it may cause to spread of viral carriers to many peoples. To reduce the spread of pandemic disease and to reduce contact with potential carriers of viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites in public places, in this paper, the authors have designed an automated contactless hand sanitizer dispenser system (ACHSDS) with an infrared (IR) sensor and based on a PIC18F4550 microcontroller for use in public places, workplaces, kindergartens, schools, universities and etc. The ACHSDS can be used without touching or holding, and may decrease the risk of contamination. © 2022 ACM.

Risk-Aware Wasserstein Distributionally Robust control of Vessels in Natural Waterways

In the realm of maritime transportation, autonomous vessel navigation in natural inland waterways faces persistent challenges due to unpredictable natural factors. Existing scheduling algorithms fall short in handling these uncertainties, compromising both safety and efficiency. Moreover, these algorithms are primarily designed for non-autonomous vessels, leading to labor-intensive operations vulnerable to human error. To address these issues, this study proposes a risk-aware motion control approach for vessels that accounts for the dynamic and uncertain nature of tide islands in a distributionally robust manner. Specifically, a model predictive control method is employed to follow the reference trajectory in the time-space map while incorporating a risk constraint to prevent grounding accidents. To address uncertainties in tide islands, a novel modeling technique represents them as stochastic polytopes. Additionally, potential inaccuracies in waterway depth are addressed through a risk constraint that considers the worst-case uncertainty distribution within a Wasserstein ambiguity set around the empirical distribution. Using sensor data collected in the Guadalquivir River, we empirically demonstrate the performance of the proposed method through simulations on a vessel. As a result, the vessel successfully navigates the waterway while avoiding grounding accidents, even with a limited dataset of observations. This stands in contrast to existing non-robust controllers, highlighting the robustness and practical applicability of the proposed approach. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The air-gap airflow will affect the performance of the high-speed slotless permanent magnet synchronous motor (HSSPMSM). However, the influence of airflow is often neglected in motor design, leading to discrepancies between the designed and actual performance. This paper conducts the design and analysis of the HSSPMSM considering the influence of air-gap airflow. The coupling relationships among airflow, electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical are established. The dimensions design and performance analysis of the HSSPMSM are performed. Based on the designed dimensions, a lOkW/40krpm HSSPMSM prototype is developed. The experimental results indicate that the developed HSSPMSM matches the design requirements.

Exploring FMCW Radars and Feature Maps for Activity Recognition: A Benchmark Study

Human Activity Recognition has gained significant attention due to its diverse applications, including ambient assisted living and remote sensing. Wearable sensor-based solutions often suffer from user discomfort and reliability issues, while video-based methods raise privacy concerns and perform poorly in low-light conditions or long ranges. This study introduces a Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave radar-based framework for human activity recognition, leveraging a 60 GHz radar and multi-dimensional feature maps. Unlike conventional approaches that process feature maps as images, this study feeds multi-dimensional feature maps—Range-Doppler, Range-Azimuth, and Range-Elevation —as data vectors directly into the machine learning (SVM, MLP) and deep learning (CNN, LSTM, ConvLSTM) models, preserving the spatial and temporal structures of the data. These features were extracted from a novel dataset with seven activity classes and validated using two different validation approaches. The ConvLSTM model outperformed conventional machine learning and deep learning models, achieving an accuracy of 90.51% and an F1-score of 87.31% on cross-scene validation, and an accuracy of 89.56% and an F1-score of 87.15% on leave-one-person-out cross-validation. The results highlight the approach’s potential for scalable, non-intrusive, and privacy-preserving activity monitoring in real-world scenarios. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.

Efficiently detecting target weld seams while ensuring sub-millimeter accuracy has always been an important challenge in autonomous welding, which has significant application in industrial practice. Previous works mostly focused on recognizing and localizing welding seams one by one, leading to inferior efficiency in modeling the workpiece. This paper proposes a novel framework capable of multiple weld seams extraction using both RGB images and 3D point clouds. The RGB image is used to obtain the region of interest by approximately localizing the weld seams, and the point cloud is used to achieve the fine-edge extraction of the weld seams within the region of interest using region growth. Our method is further accelerated by using a pre-trained deep learning model to ensure both efficiency and generalization ability. The proposed method was comprehensively tested on various workpieces featuring both linear and curved weld seams, as well as in physical experiment systems. The results showcase considerable potential for real-world industrial applications, emphasizing the method’s efficiency and effectiveness. In order to further understand the mechanism of material volume change in the drying process,numerical simulations(considering or neglecting shrinkage)of heat and mass transfer during convective drying of carrot slices under constant and controlled temperature and relative humidity were carried *** results were validated with experimental *** results of the simulation show that the Quadratic model fitted well to the moisture ratio and the material temperature data trend with average relative errors of 5.9%and 8.1%,***,the results of the simulation considering shrinkage show that the moisture and temperature distributions during drying are closer to the experimental data than the results of the simulation disregarding *** material moisture content was significantly related to the shrinkage of dried *** and relative humidity significantly affected the volume shrinkage of carrot *** volume shrinkage increased with the rising of the constant temperature and the decline of relative *** model can be used to provide more information on the dynamics of heat and mass transfer during drying and can also be adapted to other products and dryers devices.

The superior performance of object detectors is often established under the condition that the test samples are in the same distribution as the training data. However, in many practical applications, out-of-distribution (OOD) instances are inevitable and usually lead to uncertainty in the results. In this paper, we propose a novel, intuitive, and scalable probabilistic object detection method for OOD detection. Unlike other uncertainty-modeling methods that either require huge computational costs to infer the weight distributions or rely on model training through synthetic outlier data, our method is able to distinguish between in-distribution (ID) data and OOD data via weight parameter sampling from proposed Gaussian distributions based on pre-trained networks. We demonstrate that our Bayesian object detector can achieve satisfactory OOD identification performance by reducing the FPR95 score by up to 8.19% and increasing the AUROC score by up to 13.94% when trained on BDD100k and VOC datasets as the ID datasets and evaluated on COCO2017 dataset as the OOD dataset.

Confidence-Aware Safe and Stable control of control-Affine Systems

Designing control inputs that satisfy safety requirements is crucial in safety-critical nonlinear control, and this task becomes particularly challenging when full-state measurements are unavailable. In this work, we address the problem of synthesizing safe and stable control for control-affine systems via output feedback (using an observer) while reducing the estimation error of the observer. To achieve this, we adapt control Lyapunov function (CLF) and control barrier function (CBF) techniques to the output feedback setting. Building upon the existing CLF-CBF-QP (Quadratic Program) and CBF-QP frameworks, we formulate two confidence-aware optimization problems and establish the Lipschitz continuity of the obtained solutions. To validate our approach, we conduct simulation studies on two illustrative examples. The simulation studies indicate both improvements in the observer’s estimation accuracy and the fulfillment of safety and control requirements. © 2024, CC BY.
