A fast, robust technique is needed to facilitate studies of vocalisations by dolphins and other marine mammals such as whales in which large quantities of acoustic data are commonly generated. It is sometimes necessary to be able to describe whistle contours quantitatively, rather than simply looking at descriptors such as start frequency, maximum frequency, number of inflection points, etc. This is important when whistles are to be compared using an automated classification system, and is an essential component of a real-time, automated classification system for use with a raw data stream. In this paper we describe a rapid and robust high order polynomial curve fitting technique which extracts features in preparation for automated classification. We applied this method to classify natural vocalizations of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis). We believe the method will be widely applicable to bioacoustic studies involving FM acoustic signals in both underwater and in-air environments.

There have been many attempts to represent music using a wide variety of different music visualisation schemes. In this paper, we propose a novel system architecture which combines Max/MSPtrade with Flashtrade that can be used to build real-time music visualisations rapidly. In addition, we have used this proposed architecture to develop a music visualisation scheme that uses individual notes from a MIDI keyboard or from a standard MIDI file and creates novel displays that reflect pitch, note duration, characteristics such as how hard a key is struck, and which instruments are playing at any one time. The proposed music visualization scheme is a first step towards developing a music visualization that alone can provide a sense of musical experience to the user.

We propose a linear dynamical system response (LDSR) model to describe amplitude variability across trials in event-related magnetoencephalographic/electroencephalographic (MEG/EEG) data. Variability across trials may reflect habituation, fatigue, or changes in cognitive states of the brain. A wide range of trial-to-trial variability can be represented using the LDSR model, including the constant response (CR) model as a limiting case. The spatiotemporal signal waveform is assumed constant but unknown, and is represented using a linear combination of spatial and temporal basis functions. The background noise is assumed to be spatially correlated with unknown covariance matrix. We obtain the maximum-likelihood estimates of the amplitude variability and signal waveform via a generalized Expectation-Maximization algorithm. The expectation step involves a Kalman fixed-interval smoother which tracks the trial-to-trial amplitude variability while the maximization step estimates the signal waveform, spatial noise covariance, and LDSR model parameters. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model using both real and simulated evoked response data. The performance of the algorithm is analyzed in terms of the mean squared error of the amplitude estimates.

Remote patient monitoring in e-Health is everyday closer to be a mature technology/service. However, there is still a lack of development in areas such as standardization of the sensor's communication interface, integration into Electronic Healthcare Record systems or incorporation in ambient-intelligent scenarios. This work identifies a set of use cases involved in the personal monitoring scenario and highlights the related features and functionalities, as well as the integration and implementation difficulties found when these are to be implemented in a system based on the ISO/IEEE11073 (X73) standard. It is part of a cooperative research effort devoted to the development of an end-to-end standards-based telemonitoring solution. Standardization committees are working towards adapting the X73 standard to this emerging personal health devices market and use case identification is essential to direct these revisions.

Results of our study of structural properties of the nanoscale integrated semiconductor quantum dots such as CdS and ZnS-capped CdSe, conjugated with biomolecules such as short peptides and cells are presented. Nanoscale functionalization of semiconductor quantum dots with biomedical structures is promising for many applications and novel studies of intrinsic properties of both constituent systems. We study CdS semiconductor quantum dots functionalized with peptides composed of the following amino acid chains: CGGGRGDS, CGGGRVDS, CGGIKVAV, and CGGGLDV, where R is arginine, D is aspartic acid, S is serine, V is valine, K is lysine and L is Levine. As will be seen the cysteine (C) amino acid links to CdS semiconductor quantum dots via the thiol link. Furthermore, the GGG sequences of glycine (G) amino acids provide a spacer in the amino acid chain. At the same time the RGDS, RVDS, IKAV, and LDV sequences have selective bonding affinities to specialized transmembrane cellular structures known as integrins of neurons and MDA-MB-435 cancer cells, respectively. Since protein hydration is known to be a key factor affecting protein energy balance, we also studied a role that water and other bioenvironments may play in stability, surface properties, dynamical and structural characteristics of these systems. We found also the roles that the quantum confinement and functionalizing in the biomedical environments play in altering and determining the electronic, optical, and vibrational properties of these nanostructures as well as demonstrated the effectiveness to use the semiconductor quantum dots as integrin sensitive biotags. © 2007 IOP Publishing Ltd.

We update a cardiopulmonary (CP) model previously developed by our group, more convincingly validate the model with additional hemodynamic and echocardiographic data, and demonstrate the utility of the model by extending it to the simulation of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) via a simple parameter change. The model has considerable potential for the characterization of complex cardiopulnionary diseases such as right or left ventricular failure, valve dysfunction, primary pulmonary hypertension, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). © 2006 IEEE.

The damping effect of various gas environments on a nanoscale resonator is investigated for gas composition analysis. The resonance frequency shift, due to the viscous damping of the cantilever, is found to be directly related to the molar mass of the gas, thereby providing a method to determine the composition of the gas environment. The advantages of this gas analysis method are that it is simple, repeatable, reversible and not limited to reactive gases. The influences of the temperature and the vibration amplitude on the resonance frequency shift are also discussed. Finally, the use of a Raman based spectroscopy technique to determine the temperature of the resonator is described.
