As patients become more proactive about their health and turn to technologies such as the Internet to acquire knowledge, the patient-health care professional relationship has been changing. Traditionally, information has flowed from health care professional to patient, but change to a two-way dialogue is taking place. In this study, we examine a high level design of a perceived medical system and determine the implications of adding patients as active contributors. The main challenge of modifying existing systems to incorporate patient interaction is preserving system integrity. We propose a systematic approach to support scaling health care systems while preserving system integrity. Distributed systems such as personal health records and eHealth systems provide two ways in which patients can become more involved with their own health care with or without the involvement of health care professionals. It is important that modifications to such systems do not compromise patient record integrity regardless of whether the patient is working alone or with their health care professional. The lack of central control in distributed systems added to the complexity of health systems poses challenges for design and modification. Of particular interest is the identification of emergent behavior (behavior not explicitly specified in the specifications) in distributed systems not explicitly defined in the requirements of its individual components. Use of the new emergent behavior detection (EBD) tool offers potentially considerable cost savings by proactively identifying such behaviors during the design rather than the deployment phase of a project. Based on high level message sequence charts, the EBD tool highlighted a data synchronization issue between the main database and the patient's interface to the system. This provides valuable feedback of the early health system design which benefits future design development.

In the age of information explosion, efficiently categorizing the topic of a document can assist our organization and comprehension of the vast amount of text. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, named DKV, for document categorization using distributed real-valued vector representation of keywords learned from neural networks. Such a representation can project rich context information (or embedding) into the vector space, and subsequently be used to infer similarity measures among words, sentences, and even documents. Using a Chinese news corpus containing over 100,000 articles and five topics, we provide a comprehensive performance evaluation to demonstrate that by exploiting the keyword embeddings, DKV paired with support vector machines can effectively categorize a document into the predefined topics. Results demonstrate that our method can achieve the best performances compared to several other approaches.

Clustering is one of the most important tasks in data mining and can be defined as the process of partitioning objects into groups or clusters, such that objects in the same group are more similar to one another than to objects belonging to other groups. Many algorithms to solve data clustering problems have been presented in the literature. Recently, bee-inspired clustering algorithms have been proposed, presenting good performance to find groups in data. This paper aims to present the parametric sensitivity analysis of cOptBees, a bee-inspired clustering algorithm designed to find optimal clusters in datasets. The algorithm was run for different parameter configurations to assess the influence of each parameter in its performance. © 2014 IEEE.

A rapid antibiotic susceptibility test (AST) is desperately needed in clinical settings for fast and appropriate antibiotic administration. Traditional ASTs, which rely on cell culture, are not suitable for urgent cases of bacterial infection and antibiotic resistance owing to their relatively long test times. Here, we describe a novel AST called single-cell morphological analysis (SCMA) that can determine antimicrobial susceptibility by automatically analyzing and categorizing morphological changes in single bacterial cells under various antimicrobial conditions. The SCMA was tested with four Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute standard bacterial strains and 189 clinical samples from hospitals. The results were compared with the gold standard broth microdilution test. The SCMA results were obtained in less than 4 hours with 91.5% categorical agreement and 6.51% minor, 2.56% major, and 1.49% very major discrepancies. Thus, SCMA provides rapid and accurate antimicrobial susceptibility data.

The vibration in induction motors is due to mechanical and electrical forces existing during the motor operation. The vibration monitoring can help to prevent wear in motors, to increase its efficiency and lowering maintenance costs. Through knowledge and accurate diagnostic procedures, it is possible to detect the cause of the vibration. This paper presents the vibration measurement analysis in the induction motor running at no-load condition using a biaxial optical fiber accelerometer. The sensor is positioned on the induction motor, and the acquired data compared with the one from a capacitive sensor. Changing the power supply frequency from 10 to 60 Hz a higher SNR was observed for both directions on the optical sensor data. The characteristics of the optical sensor, immunity to electro-magnetic interference and high sensitivity, 87.848 pm.g~(-1) and 92.351 pm.g~(-1) for two directions and independent directions, favors its use for monitoring vibrations in electrical machines. The results indicate a relation between deterioration and mechanical vibration and, thus, providing the motivation for additional study and a basis for future applications.

Optic disc is an important anatomical feature of the retinal image and helps in the diagnosis of eye diseases. The proposed method is based on the characteristics of retinal image. An important characteristic of the retinal image is that blood vessels egress from the optic disc and become thin as they move away from the optic disc. If blood vessels are tracked and features are calculated then they end up on the optic disc. Given a retinal image the proposed method first enhances the blood vessels using 2-D Gabor wavelets and segmenting the blood vessels using iterative thresholding technique to join the vessels properly. The resultant image is thinned using morphological operation and matched with the 2-D Gaussian function by tracking the blood vessels. Finally Optic disc is localized in a window. The proposed method is evaluated using publicly available databases and results show that the proposed method identifies optic disc with high accuracy. © 2014, Japan Soc. of Med. Telecommunications networks need to guarantee that all node pairs involved in critical service communications are highly available. Typically only a small fraction of traffic and users needs high levels of availability but this traffic often drives the network design to over engineering. In this paper we adopt a novel approach to the problem of how to provide high levels of availability in an efficient manner. The basic idea is to embed a high availability set of links and nodes (termed the spine) in the network topology and leverage protection and routing to provide differentiated classes of resilience with varying levels of availability. In this paper we first explore the spine concept through a simple example illustrating the potential benefits of the approach. Then we study how the structural properties of a network topology can be used to determine heuristics to select a suitable spine and compare this with the case where all network components have the same availability. This is followed by a numerical based study comparing the heuristics with all possible spanning tree based spines for sample topologies. Our results are a step along the path of how to best design a physical network to support protection methods in achieving high levels of availability cost efficiently. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper presents an automatic stress-relieving music recommendation system (ASMRS) for individual music listeners. The ASMRS uses a portable, wireless photoplethysmography module with a finger-type sensor, and a program that translates heartbeat signals from the sensor to the stress index. The sympathovagal balance index (SVI) was calculated from heart rate variability to assess the user's stress levels while listening to music. Twenty-two healthy volunteers participated in the experiment. The results have shown that the participants' SVI values are highly correlated with their prespecified music preferences. The sensitivity and specificity of the favorable music classification also improved as the number of music repetitions increased to 20 times. Based on the SVI values, the system automatically recommends favorable music lists to relieve stress for individuals.

Purpose: A calibrationless parallel imaging reconstruction method, termed simultaneous autocalibrating and k-space estimation (SAKE), is presented. It is a data-driven, coil-by-coil reconstruction method that does not require a separate calibration step for estimating coil sensitivity information. Methods: In SAKE, an undersampled, multichannel dataset is structured into a single data matrix. The reconstruction is then formulated as a structured low-rank matrix completion problem. An iterative solution that implements a projection-ontosets algorithm with singular value thresholding is described. Results: Reconstruction results are demonstrated for retrospectively and prospectively undersampled, multichannel Cartesian data having no calibration signals. Additionally, non-Cartesian data reconstruction is presented. Finally, improved image quality is demonstrated by combining SAKE with wavelet-based compressed sensing. Conclusion: Because estimation of coil sensitivity information is not needed, the proposed method could potentially benefit MR applications where acquiring accurate calibration data is limiting or not possible at all. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
