In recent years, the possibility of using smart technologies to enhance rehabilitative therapies has become a reality. Smart technologies can adjust their functionality based on real-time performance to provide the most effective therapy. This paper presents the design, development and testing of a wearable mechatronic brace created to assist in upper limb rehabilitation. The purpose of the smart brace is to provide safe therapy of musculoskeletal disorders, in particular brachial plexus injuries. A control system has been developed that facilitates the retraining of the biceps for individuals who have suffered brachial plexus nerve damage. Electromyography (EMG) data for flexion and extension of the elbow were recorded from three healthy subjects and used to scale velocity profiles. The experiments assessed the performance of the smart brace in its ability to reproduce a motion, to compensate for the effect of muscle disability and to detect fatigue. The results showed that the control system was able to adjust velocities to accommodate for disability or fatigue. This initial implementation provides a control model and logic from which the brace can be improved. Future testing of the brace using subjects with a brachial plexus injury will help solidify the techniques used for brace control.

This paper proposes an efficient architecture for FPGA implementation of MGS-QRD in MIMO wireless communication systems. The proposed architecture is based on the Hardware/Software (HW/SW) design. To achieve the efficient architecture, the systolic architecture is applied to MGS-QRD and then the conventional QR triangular array of (2m 2 +2m+1) cells onto a linear architecture of m+1 cell is employed to reduce the number of required QR processors. The reduced cells are constructed with a number of basic processing elements such as multipliers and adders etc. The basic elements are constructed by HW architectures. The SW of PowerPC core is used to control to achieve the QR decomposition. In this paper, utilization resource and operation performance in term of equivalent gates and operating cycles are shown.

A novel parallel Remote Center of Motion (RCM) mechanism is proposed for a surgical robot designed to perform minimally invasive needle-based interventions for lung cancer diagnosis and treatment. The proposed robot provides four degrees of freedom (DOFs) to orient and move a surgical needle within a spherical coordinate system. The RCM is beneath the skin surface to minimize the invasiveness of the surgical procedure while providing the required workspace. This compact, patient-mounted robot benefits from a design capable of measuring the pure interaction forces between the needle and the tissue. In this paper, the mechanism design and its specifications are described. The kinematic analysis is presented and isotropy of the mechanism for targeting tumors is studied. Finally, the performance of the proposed robot is evaluated experimentally.

Obesity has become an important health issue in Taiwan due to its increasing prevalence among population and the patients are getting younger. In this research, we build a health care information system, named the Pauian Health, for people who were on diet and to control their weight, or others to keep in shape. The Pauian Health is designed based on model–view–controller (MVC) pattern with a proposed architecture framework and has been successfully implemented in Pauian Archiland Company. The architecture centralizes the functions of accessing databases, user identification, and the validation of inherited clinical knowledge in a single component. Under this architecture, the system ensures its scalability, extensibility, data consistency, and the ability of cross-platform. This architecture has also been implemented in different devices and platforms, including iPhone, iPad and website. The architecture also supports unstable network environment, which uses Token as session identifier and user validation. The proposed framework has the potential in duplicating the service for different targeted users or deployed as a cloud service, which is fully capable in extending the service in the future.

Background: Surveillance of health care-associated infections is an essential component of infection prevention programs, but conventional systems are labor intensive and performance dependent. Objective: To develop an automatic surveillance and classification system for health care-associated bloodstream infection (HABSI), and to evaluate its performance by comparing it with a conventional infection control personnel (ICP)-based surveillance system. Methods: We developed a Web-based system that was integrated into the medical information system of a 2200-bed teaching hospital in Taiwan. The system automatically detects and classifies HABSIs. Results: In this study, the number of computer-detected HABSIs correlated closely with the number of HABSIs detected by ICP by department (n=20;r=.999 P<.001) and by time (n=14;r=.941;P<.001). Compared with reference standards, this system performed excellently with regard to sensitivity (98.16%), specificity (99.96%), positive predictive value (95.81%), and negative predictive value (99.98%). The system enabled decreasing the delay in confirmation of HABSI cases, on average, by 29 days. Conclusions: This system provides reliable and objective HABSI data for quality indicators, improving the delay caused by a conventional surveillance system. © 2020 JMIR Publications Inc. Cancer has been ranked first in the causes of death for 31 consecutive years in Taiwan. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and it becomes one of the important therapies for HCC these years. For those who had HCC and were treated by RFA, their clinical data are collected to build predictive models which can be used in predicting the recurrence or not of liver cancer after RAF treatment. Clinical data with multiple measurements are merged based on different time periods and these data are further transformed based on temporal abstraction (TA). Data processed by TA reveal variations of clinical data with different time points. The goal of this study is to evaluate whether clinical data handled by TA could facilitate performance of predictive models. Different data sets are used in developing predictive models, including clinical data which are not processed by TA called the original data set, clinical data which are processed by TA called the TA data set, and combination of the original data set and the TA data set called the TA+original data set. Support vector machine (SVM) was selected as a classifier to develop predictive models. The results demonstrate data sets processed by TA provide benefit for predictive models.

Heavily-doped strained germanium (Ge) can emit light efficiently thanks to its pseudo direct band gap characteristic. This makes Ge a good candidate for on-chip monolithic light sources in silicon (Si) photonics systems. We propose fin-shaped Ge-Si heterojunction lightemitting diode (LED) with metal gates, which can enhance light emission by coupling with surface plasmon resonant modes and modulate light emission from the LED. We verify these two aspects through numerical analysis and device simulations. We develop the method to find the optimal device structure and specific device dimensions to maximize the spontaneous emission rate enhancement. Also we find that the LED can be modulated by a gate voltage bias. © 2014 Optical Society of America.

This paper presents the comparation of three different feature extraction techniques based on the Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) for a SSVEP-BCI. This approach based on the characterization of the signal by EMD, is proposed as a novel alternative to other techniques and it was demonstrated that it exceeds both in accuracy rate and Information Transfer Rate (ITR). The experiments were performed in an offline way, and seven volunteers participated of the study. The stimulis were generated both by LCD and LEDs. The frequencies used were 8, 11, 13 and 15 Hz. The results here reported such represent the average of the seven participants, achieving a success rate of 81% and ITR of 23.32 bits/min of the total set of cases analyzed. It is further confirmed that the highest success rates and ITRs were obtained for stimulation by LEDs.

This paper presents the evaluation of seven techniques of feature extraction (PSD, F-Test, EMD, MCE, CCA, LASSO and MSI) for gaze-target detections in a SSVEP-based BCI. Two type of technologies for visual stimulation were used (LCD and LEDs). Five differents windows lengths (1, 2, 4, 5 and 10 s) were used and seven volunteers participated in this study. The highest accuracy obtained in all cases was 93.57% using LEDs and the highest ITR was 36.90 bits/min for LCD. The technique based on MSI shows the highest success rate in both cases (LCD or LED) and is even more noticeable when the window size is increased.
