The management of sports concussion and an understanding of its risk factors are major foci in the literature on athletic injury. Although there is known influence of some genetic polymorphisms (GPs), such as APOE and the APOE promoter, on traumatic brain injury (TBI) outcome in non-athletic populations, very little work has focused on the role these GPs may play in sports concussion. We completed a large (n=3274) multi-center prospective cohort study of college athletes to study possible associations between various GPs and prospectively occurring sports concussion. We found no significant relationship between the APOE e4 allele, the APOE G-219T promoter, the tau exon 6 Ser53pro or the tau His47Tyr GPs on prospective concussion. Additional study of other GPs and haplotype combinations is a next logical step in the search for genetic predisposition to sports-related concussion.

Accurate spatial perception is important for the successful performance of any motor task. Research suggests that this capability declines significantly in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Using a virtual reality navigational test, this study investigates the orientation ability. In particular, we hypothesize the ability to orient using egocentric information declines significantly with Alzheimer's even at early stages, whereas general orientation abilities maybe preserved through the use of allocentric orientation strategies in mild Alzheimer's patients. The study subjects were 11 cognitively healthy and 8 patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's. The results are congruent with our hypothesis, and encourage further investigation in a larger population.

Four-sensor microelectrodes, commonly referred to as tetrodes, have the ability to significantly increase the signal-to-noise ratio of neuronal extracellular recordings. They also provide spatio-temporal information about extracellular action potentials (EAP) which may be used to localize and resolve individual neuronal signal sources. Since the relative position of sensors and neurons whose EAPs are recorded is not known during in vivo experiments, the accuracy and precision of neuronal source localization algorithms remain untested. In this study, electrical signals generated by a stimulator were recorded simultaneously with four recording micropipettes immersed in artificial cerebrospinal fluid. The location of the source was estimated using the multiple signal classification algorithm, with an accuracy and precision of ～4 μm and ～7 μm, respectively. These results suggest that in vivo localization and resolution of individual neuronal sources is feasible.

This paper presents the design and fabrication of a 3-dimensional (3-D), hemispherical lens based on reflecting superposition compound eye (RSCE) optics. The configuration of our hemispherical lens, similar to that of natural RSCEs, consists of a large-area array of reflective, high aspect-ratio, micro-square-tubes fabricated on a transparent, flexible and hemispherical polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane via a peeling micro-printing process. The dimensions of the micro-square-tubes are on the order of tens of microns. Unlike ordinary lenses, our RSCE device focuses light based on reflection rather than refraction. The hemispherical RSCE lens was able to focus a collimated and a non-collimated light source, respectively, with a focal length of 1.5 cm. The imaging performance was consistent with theoretic prediction based on the geometric optics model and ray-tracing technique. The device also achieved a wide field of view (FOV) of up to 100°. © 2013 IEEE.

Porous, nanostructured silver samples were produced using a direct-write method where a nanoparticle aerosol consisting of particles with a mean size of approximately 5 nm were accelerated to speeds of approximately 1000 m/sec and impacted onto a translating substrate [1]. The impacting particles have sufficient energy to stick to the substrate, allowing patterned thick films to be directly written from the aerosol without a mask. Unlike other low temperature processing routes for achieving patterned films, no organics are added that can interfere with postdeposition processing. Typical films are 5- 100 μm thick, up to several centimeters long, and have an as-deposited relative densities as high as 70% of bulk Ag. Compression tests were carried out in steps at room temperature and at 150°C under constant displacement rates. Local strain and densification were measured by optical profilometry between each compression step. The results can be used as a starting point to better understand the mechanisms that govern plasticity, creep, and sintering in nanostructured, porous silver at low processing temperatures.

This project proposes a pulse analysis system for doctors to diagnose their patients using their pulse signals. A novice and easy time-domain algorithm is applied to pulse signal for periodic function examination. Monitoring and modeling our body as a system with digitalized pulse signals is one of the linkages that we can find among Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), hemodynamics and modern Information Communication Technology (ICT). With the labeling of diseases or some modern Bio-markers, we are able to link pulse analysis, ICT and the latest medical science together. The proposed method is capable of calculating the instability of the pulse wave of subjects. After finding the starting point of each period in a periodic wave, we use set theory as the constraint to detect stable periodic wave. With normal heart rate checking and the variability of each period checking, our algorithm can detect whether the input signal is normal, stable and periodic. A coefficient that represents the instability is calculated by the average Standard Deviation (SD) of each period in the waveform. The proposed system helps the automation of pulse examination to select a proper segment for harmonic analysis. With the periodic function examination method, non-survival sepsis patients in Continuous Mandatory Ventilation (CMV) mode or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) mode can be significantly separated.

This paper presents a modal model to describe and facilitate communication design in collaborative settings. This model was conceived of as a tool for understanding the nature of collaboration between artists and scientists in an interdisciplinary case study, but can be used cross-disciplinarily and ultimately prescriptively. The model may reveal shifting patterns of interaction between collaborators over time and through multiple processes. Patterns may be revealed in setting and attaining benchmark goals as well as in general group communication. Different collaborative modes (ontological relationships between collaborators) and modes of being (phenomenological relationship between collaborators) form the basis for sixty collaborative possibilities with two or more collaborators. © 2013 ACM.

This paper presents a shunt active power filter based on the concept of open-end winding (OEW) transformers. The proposed configuration is constituted of two converters with three legs each series connected throughout a three-phase OEW transformer. Model PWM strategy and control scheme are presented as well. The main advantage of the proposed system lies on the multi-level waveform generation, which allows reduction of either harmonic distortions or switching losses. This proposed topology is suitable for medium voltage (MV) distribution systems. Simulation and experimental results validate the theoretical study.

A web-based telehealthcare system was integrated with the mobile application for diet people. In order to comprehensively deal with the over-weight problem, the user interface with four important aspects on weight, diet, exercise and sleep records is implemented. In addition, online courses and knowledge of diet are provided in the system. The electronic medical record of National Taiwan University Hospital is also embedded in the system for the case managers and doctors to evaluate the status of the over-weight patients. We utilized Pearson's Correlation Coefficient which represented the correlative degree of two variables to discover the relationship between the reduced weight of people and their lifestyle records. We found that three aspects of records (compliancy, violation, exercise) were important for people who wanted to lose weight. © 2013 IEEE.
