Wafer bonding technology is applied to the GaN/quantum dots/GaN system, where CdSe/ZnS Quantum Dots serve as both the active layer and the binding layer. Photoluminescence is observed from quantum dots following wafer bonding at various temperatures under ultra high vacuum condition. Temperature dependences of bond strength and photoluminescence properties are characterized. Annealing at elevated temperature to form wafer bonds degrades photoluminescence intensity and slightly blue shifts the wavelength. Transmission Electron Microscopy is applied to study the physical properties of vacuum annealed QDs, in which agglomeration is observed. ©The Electrochemical Society.

Virtual and augmented reality environments have been adopted in medicine as a means to enhance the clinician's view of the anatomy and facilitate the performance of minimally invasive procedures. Their value is truly appreciated during interventions where the surgeon cannot directly visualize the targets to be treated, such as during cardiac procedures performed on the beating heart. These environments must accurately represent the real surgical field and require seamless integration of pre- and intra-operative imaging, surgical tracking, and visualization technology in a common framework centered around the patient. This review begins with an overview of minimally invasive cardiac interventions, describes the architecture of a typical surgical guidance platform including imaging, tracking, registration and visualization, highlights both clinical and engineering accuracy limitations in cardiac image guidance, and discusses the translation of the work from the laboratory into the operating room together with typically encountered challenges. © 2008 IEEE.

The use of MEMS to study the effect of mechanical compression on neurogenesis has been demonstrated. Polydimethylsiloxane-(PDMS)-based stretchable platforms were used on neurosphere assay to investigate the role of mechanical forces on the formation of radial glial processes, neuronal generation and migration. To induce mechanical compression on neurospheres, The PDMS culturing substrate is patterned with micron-sized wells. Neurospheres are cultured on the prestretched device. After 48 hours, when neurospheres are grown to the size of the well's width, the stretched substrate is released. The experimental results showed that applied mechanical compression on neural stem cells cultured as neurospheres could be a factor accelerating the radial glial formation, which is associated to neurogenesis and neuronal migration.

Semantic similarity measure plays an essential role in Information Retrieval and Natural Language Processing. In this paper we propose a page-count-based semantic similarity measure and apply it in biomedical domains. Previous researches in semantic web related applications have deployed various semantic similarity measures. Despite the usefulness of the measurements in those applications, measuring semantic similarity between two terms remains a challenge task. The proposed method exploits page counts returned by the Web Search Engine. We define various similarity scores for two given terms P and Q, using the page counts for querying P, Q and P AND Q. Moreover, we propose a novel approach to compute semantic similarity using lexico-syntactic patterns with page counts. These different similarity scores are integrated adapting support vector machines, to leverage the robustness of semantic similarity measures. Experimental results on two datasets achieve correlation coefficients of 0.798 on the dataset provided by A. Hliaoutakis, 0.705 on the dataset provide by T. Pedersen with physician scores and 0.496 on the dataset provided by T. Pedersen et al. with expert scores.

Statistical analysis of retinal tomographic pseudo images for diagnostic purpose

The majority of visual impairments are related to retinal disorders. Therefore, techniques useful for early detection of retinal anomalies are of great interest for diagnosis and treatment of related pathologies. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive technique that is becoming increasingly important in the analysis of human retina. This technique produces sections of a three dimensional reflectance map, which are pseudo-images of the retinal structure. In these pseudo-images, early pathologies may produce local modifications of reflectance, which visually, appear as blots. Consequently, automatic procedures for detection of such blots may be of help in the diagnosis of many retinal diseases. Due to the complexity of the measurement technique and of the retinal structure, the pseudo-images produced by OCT can be modeled as 2D random signals: the above pathological blots correspond to sudden changes in the distribution of such OCT signals. In this work, we performed a statistical analysis of retinal OCT data. We found that the so-called stretched-exponential distribution, a two-parameter probability density function, provides a model that describes the data in a satisfactory way. In addition, we analyzed spatial-reflectance interdependence by studying the autocorrelation function;this analysis showed a significant correlation between contiguous pixels about 5 μm apart. We then developed a procedure to obtain the maximum-likelihood estimate of distribution parameters along the retinal pseudo-image. With this procedure, we analyzed their spatial dependence both along and across retinal layers. We observed that along suitable thin layers, the two parameters were statistically constant. By exploiting this result, a statistical procedure was developed for automatic detection of parameter variations due to retinal pathological blots. Some first results are reported for detection of diabetic retinopathy. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

The clinical data stored in the health information system can be categorized as two types including structuralized data and non-structuralized ones. In the paper, a data extraction system is developed to assist data retrieval from the non-structuralized textual clinical documents such as radiology reports, pathology reports, etc. The system provides keyword-based and semantic-driven data matching methodology to extract the specific information from the textual clinical documents. The matching methodology provides the capabilities to recognize the selected keywords and the related semantics in the documents. Through the extraction verification interface, clinicians can extract and verify the matched information semi-automatically. The extracted data can be filled into predefined case-oriented templates. The structuralized data can be stored back into the clinical data warehouse for further analyzing. Moreover, the case-oriented templates can support collecting corresponding extracted data for various researches.

Artificial Immune Systems (AISs) are composed of techniques inspired by immunology. The clonal selection principle ensures the organism adaptation to fight invading antigens by an immune response activated by the binding of antigens and antibodies. As an immune response can be elicited even when the binding between an antigen and an antibody is not perfect, an approximate binding might suffice, and a Fuzzy Logic mechanism might be the most appropriate mechanism to control such process. This paper presents a novel hybrid model based on concepts of Immune and Fuzzy Systems with applications to pattern recognition problems. The preliminary results obtained here suggest the proposed model is a promising pattern recognition tool.

Discharge summary note is one of important clinical data in medical records, and it concisely summarizes the patient's stay during hospitalization. In this article, we use web-based architecture in developing a new discharge summary system of National Taiwan University Hospital, and improve the traditional client/server architecture of old system. This article introduces the design considerations and implementation level in detail, including summary search and query, model and phrase quoted, summary check list, major editing blocks and other functionalities.

In this paper the incipient fault detection problem in induction machine stator-winding is considered. The problem is solved using a new technique of change point detection in time series, based on a three-step formulation. The technique can detect up to two change points in the time series. The first step consists of a Kohonen neural network classification algorithm that defines the model to be used, one change point or two change points. The second step consists of a fuzzy clustering to transform the initial data, with arbitrary distribution, into a new one that can be approximated by a beta distribution. The fuzzy cluster centers are determined by using the Kohonen neural network classification algorithm used in the first step. The last step consists in using the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm for performing the change point detection in the transformed time series generated by the second step with that known distribution. The incipient faults are detected as long as they characterize change points in such transformed time series. The main contribution of the proposed approach in this paper, related to previous one in the Literature, is to detect up to two change points in the time series considered, besides the enhanced resilience of the new fault detection procedure against false alarms, combined with a good sensitivity that allows the detection of rather small fault signals. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the proposed methodology. © 2010 IEEE.
