Assessment theory has expanded from traditional examinations that are focused on the result, to include the process of learning. ABET program evaluators (PEVs) have been instructed to look for documentation of student learning in the samples of student work required of institutions seeking accreditation. Educational theory supports this change as a positive shift to promote student success. This paper will explore the techniques which institutions can use to successfully exemplify the achievements and transformation of their students, which will meet the expectations of ABET evaluators. The benefits of this new approach, for faculty, students and the program will be highlighted. © American Society for engineering Education, 2009.

High-frequency power Doppler imaging of angiogenesis can be challenging given the presence of small blood vessels and slow flow velocities. In the presence of substantial Doppler artifacts such as false-positive color pixels or undetected vessels, color pixel density (CPD) and related vascularity metrics do not provide accurate estimates of vascular volume fraction. As a step towards improved microvascular quantification, flow-phantom experiments were performed to establish relationships between CPD and wall filter cut-off velocity for various combinations of vessel size (160, 200, 250, 300, and 360 μm), flow velocity (4, 3, 2, 1, and 0.5 mm/s), and transducer frequency (30 and 40 MHz). Three distinct regions were observed in plots of CPD versus wall filter cut-off velocity: overestimation of CPD at low cut-offs, underestimation of CPD at high cut-offs, and a plateau at intermediate cut-offs. The CPD at the plateau closely matched the phantom's actual vascular volume fraction. The length of the plateau corresponded with the flow-detection performance of the Doppler system, which was assessed using receiver operating characteristic analysis. Color pixel density versus wall filter cut-off curves from analogous in vivo experiments exhibited the same shape, including a distinct CPD plateau. The similar shape of the flow-phantom and in vivo curves suggests that the presence of a plateau can be used to identify the best-estimate CPD value in an in vivo experiment. The ability to identify the best CPD estimate is expected to improve quantification of angiogenesis and anti-angiogenic treatment responses with power Doppler. © 2009 SPIE.

As the size of CMOS devices is scaled down to nanometers, noise can significantly affect circuit performance. Because noise is random and dynamic in nature, a probabilistic-based approach is better suited to handle these types of errors compared with conventional CMOS designs. In this paper, we propose a cost-effective probabilistic-based noise-tolerant circuit-design methodology. Our cost-effective method is based on master-and-slave Markov random field (MRF) mapping and master-and-slave MRF logic-gate construction. The resulting probabilistic-based MRF circuit trades hardware cost for circuit reliability. To demonstrate a noise-tolerant performance, an 8-bit MRF carry-lookahead adder (MRF-CLA) was implemented using the 0.13-μm CMOS process technology. The chip measurement results show that the proposed master-and-slave MRF-CLA can provide a 7.00× 10-5 bit-error rate (BER) under 10.6-dB signal-to-noise ratio, while the conventional CMOS-CLA can only provide 8.84×10-3 BER. Because of high noise immunity, the master-and-slave MRF-CLA can operate under 0.25 V to tolerate noise interference with only 1.9 μW of energy consumption. Moreover, the transistor count can be reduced by 42% as compared with the direct-mapping MRF-CLA design. © 2006 IEEE.

The basic function of VSCs is to convert the DC voltage stored in a capacitor into AC voltages or AC voltages into DC voltage. One of the advantages of the VSC is that this kind of electronic converters allow to control the active and reactive power flow with an ac-grid independently. This paper presents a short analysis of the characteristics and dynamic of VSC-HVDC, identification techniques to find transfer function to DC Voltage and Reactive Power in a rectifier station are explored, and finally controller design to regulate the DC voltage is exposed and tested by simulations using Matlab Simulink and its toolbox SimpowerSystems. ©2009 IEEE.

Binocular indirect ophthalmoscope (BIO) provides a wider view of fundus with stereopsis contrary to the direct one. Proposed system is composed of portable BIO and 3D viewing unit. The illumination unit of BIO utilized high flux LED as a light source, LED condensing lens cap for beam focusing, color filters and small lithium ion battery. In optics unit of BIO, beam splitter was used to distribute an examinee's fundus image both to examiner's eye and to CMOS camera module attached to device. Captured retinal video stream data from stereo camera modules were sent to PC through USB 2.0 connectivity. For 3D viewing, two video streams having parallax between them were aligned vertically and horizontally and made into side-by-side video stream for cross-eyed stereoscopy. And the data were converted into autostereoscopic video stream using vertical interlacing for stereoscopic LCD which has glass 3D filter attached to the front side of it. Our newly devised system presented the real-time 3-D view of fundus to assistants with less dizziness than cross-eyed stereoscopy. And the BIO showed good performance compared to conventional portable BIO (Spectra Plus, Keeler Limited, Windsor, UK). © 2009 SPIE-IS&T.

The finger vein image acquired with an acquisition system should be properly aligned to proceed with comparing algorithm. However it is not easy to find control the points since the images are naturally blurred with an inherent scattering property. To overcome this problem, we propose a novel finger vein registration method utilizing skin surface information (i.e. wrinkles and outlines). We assumed that finger crooking was insignificant. Images were sampled with intended translation and rotation. Each time, two images were acquired successively by switching the light source;one with infrared light and the other with white light. Degree of rotation and translation of sampled image were calculated using outline features in the white light image and then the infrared image was transformed according to the calculated data. To validate our method, correlation values were computed between identical subjects and different subjects. High correlation values were shown between identical subjects whereas low values were shown between different subjects. © 2009 SPIE.

The main goal in design of grid connected photo voltaic systems is to maximize the energy generation based on local energy requirements, weather conditions, economic and social impact. These factors ought to be taken into account to perform a model that allow design grid-connected photo voltaic systems. In this paper a design-dimensioning model for a small grid-connected photo voltaic systems is developed. This model is based on energy conditions instead of power conditions. There are shown the two main trends that are typically used in the design process and the calculation of the two main components of the system (generator and inverter). An example of the design for a system located in Bogota-Colombia is studied. ©2009 IEEE.

Data classification is an intensively studied machine learning problem and there are two major categories of data classification algorithms, namely the logic based and the kernel based. The logic based classifiers, such as the decision tree and the rule-based classifier, feature the advantage of presenting a good summary about the distinctive characteristics of different classes of data. On the other hand, the kernel based classifiers, such as the neural network and the support vector machine (SVM), typically can deliver higher prediction accuracy than the logic based classifiers. However, the user of a kernel based classifier normally cannot get an overall picture about the distribution of the data set. For some applications, the overall picture of the distribution of the data set can provide valuable insights about the distinctive characteristics of different classes of data and therefore is highly desirable. In this article, aiming to close the gap between the logic based classifiers and the kernel based classifiers, we propose a novel approach to carry out density estimation based on a mixture model composed of a limited number of generalized Gaussian components. One favorite feature of the classifier constructed with the proposed approach is that a user can easily obtain an overall picture of the distributions of the data set by examining the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the covariance matrices associated with the generalized Gaussian components. Experimental results show that the classifier constructed with the proposed approach is capable of delivering superior prediction accuracy in comparison with the conventional logic based classifiers and the EM (Expectation Maximization) based classifier. On the other hand, though it cannot match the prediction accuracy delivered by the SVM, the proposed classifier enjoys one major advantage due to providing the user with an overall picture of the underlying distributions. © 2009 IEEE.

In this report, the nanopatterning method based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) with electrical bias to form the oxide patterns on silicon wafer is described. Under constant bias, 30 V, the linear pattern size is proportional to the rising humidity in the working environment. According to our experimental results, the sizes of the most circular nanopattems are in the range from 50 nm to 70 nm depending on the applied bias and interaction time. In the results of evaluating the generation of oxidative production, the diameters and the number of oxide two dimensional nanopattern array, defaulted to 25 dots in 1 μm 2, appeared in the AFM images have increasing tendency with the larger bias and the longer dwell time. Moreover, the imaging features of nanopattems caused by bias 30 V have better performance than those by 10 V, and the dwell time only takes 0.015 s per dot. In this paper Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) technique is implemented and applied to the system identification problem of a Magneto-Rheological (MR) damper. GMDH networks are used to approximate the forward and inverse dynamic behaviors of a MR damper. The difficulty of this identification problem stems from the inherent hysteretic and highly nonlinear dynamics of MR dampers. The GMDH-based solution exhibits comparable identification accuracy in both the forward and inverse models as compared to state-of-the-art more computationally extensive solutions. © 2009 IEEE.
