The clinical symptoms of metabolic disorders are rarely apparent during the neonatal period, and if they are not treated early, irreversible damage, such as mental retardation, or even death, may occur. Therefore, the practice of newborn screening is important to the prevention of permanent disabilities in newborns. In this paper, we propose a newborn screening system that uses Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification techniques to evaluate raw data on the concentrations of metabolic substances obtained from tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) to determine if a newborn has a metabolic disorder. As per the concept of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), we designed the system using web services techniques, which are suitable for integrating heterogeneous platforms, protocols, and applications. It can be integrated seamlessly into National Taiwan University Hospital Information Systems (HIS) or other related HIS. © 2008 IEEE.

Stochastic resonance (SR) has been shown to improve the detection of subthreshold neural signals in uncorrelated noise. It is yet unclear if and how interactions within a population of neurons can improve information processing in neural networks. In this paper, we investigate the effect of the number of neurons on information transmission in an array of hippocampal CA1 neuron models, i.e., array-enhanced SR (AESR). In computer simulations, the sub-threshold synaptic current (signal) generated by a filtered homogeneous Poisson process was applied to a distal position in each of the apical dendrites, while the background synaptic currents (uncorrelated noise) were presented to a proximal or middle point in each of the dendrites. The transmembrane potentials were recorded at one of the somas in the array of CA1 neuron models, in order to find spike firings and likewise to estimate the total and noise entropies calculated from those spike firing times. The results show that the information rate estimated at the population of the CA1 neuron models is maximized at a specific amplitude of uncorrelated noise, implying AESR. The results further show that the maximum information rate is increased as the number of neurons is increased. It is concluded that AESR can be an important role in information processing is neural systems and that the AESR is modulated by the number of neurons within the network.

Therefore, practicing the newborn screening is essential to prevent newborns from these damages. In the paper, we propose a newborn screening system using Support Vector Machines (SVM) classification techniques to evaluate, interpret, and determine whether a newborn has metabolic disorder diseases. The raw data, i.e., substances concentrations, were collected from the Tandem Mass Spectrometry (MS/MS). In addition, based on the concept of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), we design the system under Web Services .NET environment. The system provides features including heterogeneous platforms, protocols, as well as applications. It can be integrated seamlessly into National Taiwan University Hospital Information Systems later.

We announced that fully implantable middle ear hearing device (F-IMEHD) has been researched in several papers. The F-IMEHD requires proper fitting process reflected properties of each device like other hearing aids. The F-IMEHD uses vibration transducer attached on ossicles for a sound transmission to human's inner ear. The F-IMEHD is implanted under the skin. Therefore, the fitting process for F-IMEHD has to consider properties of the microphone and transducer. In this paper, fitting system which consist of basestation and fitting software, have been designed and implemented for fitting and control of F-IMEHD. We calculate proper parameters according to hearing threshold level of each patient using the fitting software, and the parameters are transmitted to implanted system from the base-station. The base-station has all control function for F-IMEHD using a wireless communication. Moreover the base-station is a relay station which fitting parameters send to implanted system from fitting software on a PC.

The effectiveness of the visual feedback to improve ability with the sense and muscular strength of human in our bicycle system was quantitatively verified in our study. Experiments were performed to find the factors related to the training of equilibrium sense. The subjects consisted of young and the aged and the group of young people was compared against the group of the aged. We investigated three different training modes, non-visual feedback (NVF), visual feedback of the weight (VFW), and visual feedback of the center of pressure (VFC) and measured the riding time and speed, the weight shift, and the center of pressure (COP) for twenties and seventies. The results showed that the running capability of the young and the aged became much better after repeated training. In addition, it was found out that the ability to control postural balance and the capability of equilibrium sense were improved with the presentation of the visual feedback information. These results will be effective in the diagnosis of equilibrium sense and vestibular function with the aged.

The rapid growth of the biomedical literature and genomic information presents a major challenge for determining the functional relationships among genes. In this study, we develop a Web-based bioinformatics software environment called FAUN or feature annotation using nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) to facilitate both the discovery and classification of functional relationships among genes. Both the computational complexity and parameterization of NMF for processing gene sets are discussed. We tested FAUN on three manually constructed gene document collections, and then used it to analyze several microarray-derived gene sets obtained from studies of the developing cerebellum in normal and mutant mice. FAUN provides utilities for collaborative knowledge discovery and identification of new gene relationships from text streams and repositories (e.g., MEDLINE). It is particularly useful for the validation and analysis of gene associations suggested by microarray experimentation.

Several types of implantable middle ear hearing devices (IMEHDs) have been developed to overcome disadvantages of the conventional hearing aids. IMEHDs are divided into three parts which are a microphone, a signal processing unit, and a vibration transducer. In particular, the vibration transducer is very important component because it directly generates the mechanical vibration in the ossicles so that the input sound can be delivered to the inner ear. As one of the vibration transducer for IMEHDs, a differential floating mass transducer (DFMT) has been developed in Korea. However, the study for the DFMT has focused on the improvement in vibration efficiency until now. In this paper, the hermetically sealed DFMT for implantation is implemented and its vibration characteristic is measured. Then, the vibration characteristic of the DFMT is also compared with that of the stapes displacement defined by ASTM. Through the comparison, it is verified that the implemented DFMT has proper vibration displacement.
