Synthesis of novel material often times requires novel analysis and characterization techniques. The possibility of combining sputtering (SPU) and Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) in the same chamber, Sputtering Atomic Layer Augmented Deposition (SALAD), has produced interesting meta-dielectric nanocomposite systems that have unique optical and electronic properties, which may find novel applications [1]. Scanning Microwave Impedance Microscopy (sMIM) is a relatively novel characterization tool which permits assessment of local impedance. More recently, the utilization of microwaves in the near field regime has been an exciting topic in the field of high-resolution microscopy. We were able to demonstrate 1 nm resolution using scanning Microwave Impedance Microscopy (sMIM) where a spontaneously forming water meniscus concentrated the microwave fields in small regions [2]. Here we analyzed numerically sMIM with Finite Element Method (FEM) to investigate complex metal-dielectric structures created in a SALAD system. sMIM measurements provide information on both real and imaginary parts of the reflected microwave signal, which can be associated with the local conductivity and permittivity. Yet, these quantities can be influenced by the local topography, so extraction of the electronic contribution is a challenge. In this work, we perform tip-surface distance scans in order to gain a better understanding of the substrate response and compare with the FEM results. © COPYRIGHT SPIE. Typical video compression systems consist of two main modules: motion coding and residual coding. This general architecture is adopted by classical coding schemes (such as international standards H.265 and H.266) and deep learning-based coding schemes. We propose a novel B-frame coding architecture based on two-layer Conditional Augmented Normalization Flows (CANF). It has the striking feature of not transmitting any motion information. Our proposed idea of video compression without motion coding offers a new direction for learned video coding. Our base layer is a low-resolution image compressor that replaces the full-resolution motion compressor. The low-resolution coded image is merged with the warped high-resolution images to generate a high-quality image as a conditioning signal for the enhancement-layer image coding in full resolution. One advantage of this architecture is significantly reduced computational complexity due to eliminating the motion information compressor. In addition, we adopt a skip-mode coding technique to reduce the transmitted latent samples. The rate-distortion performance of our scheme is slightly lower than that of the state-of-the-art learned B-frame coding scheme, B-CANF, but outperforms other learned B-frame coding schemes. However, compared to B-CANF, our scheme saves 45% of multiply-accumulate operations (MACs) for encoding and 27% of MACs for decoding. The code is available at https://***.

Nowadays, applications involving multiple robotic systems connected through a wireless network - to perform tasks together - have an increased research interest. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are excellent tools for evaluating and surveying distributed robotic systems applications due to their flexibility and three-dimensional mobility capability. Cooperative systems composed of multiples UAVs may have a centralized coordination which assists the members of a team to make their decisions in a distributed manner regarding the tasks to be performed. This paper proposes a system composed of embedded hardware and a high-level communication protocol that serves as a basis for identifying, distributing, and allocating tasks in a simple and distributed way to be used by groups of UAVs. The proposal is evaluated in a search and rescue scenario. The setup is configured with two types of UAVs - namely, searchers (search for new tasks) and workers (execution of tasks). Also, a set of nine simulation experiments covering three different setups were performed. Then the proposal is evaluated by two sets of field experiments with real vehicles. The obtained results in the proposed experiments demonstrate that the system can be successfully used in the proposed scenario for task distribution and allocation. © 2021 IEEE.

Comparative analysis of deep learning models for detecting face mask

The spread of Corona Virus Disease 19 (COVID-19) in Indonesia is still relatively high and has not shown a significant decrease. One of the main reasons is due to the lack of supervision on the implementation of health protocols such as wearing masks in daily activities. Recently, state-of-the-art algorithms were introduced to automate face mask detection. To be more specific, the researchers developed various kinds of architectures for the detection of masks based on computer vision methods. This paper aims to evaluate well-known architectures, namely the ResNet50, VGG11, InceptionV3, EfficientNetB4, and YOLO (You Only Look Once) to recommend the best approach in this specific field. By using the MaskedFace-Net dataset, the experimental results showed that the EfficientNetB4 architecture has better accuracy at 95.77% compared to the YOLOv4 architecture of 93.40%, InceptionV3 of 87.30%, YOLOv3 of 86.35%, ResNet50 of 84.41%, VGG11 of 84.38%, and YOLOv2 of 78.75%, respectively. It should be noted that particularly for YOLO, the model was trained using a collection of MaskedFace-Net images that had been pre-processed and labelled for the task. The model was initially able to train faster with pre-trained weights from the COCO dataset thanks to transfer learning, resulting in a robust set of features expected for face mask detection and classification.

Detecting stress is crucial for preventing long-term health issues, and recent research, particularly using the WESAD (WEarable Stress and Affect Detection) dataset, has made significant advances in this area. Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) demonstrate a key advantage by efficiently processing raw signals, unlike traditional machine learning methods that predominantly rely on human-engineered *** our study, we enhance DNN capabilities by integrating both raw signals and human-engineered features altogether. Our model, augmented with attention mechanisms, significantly improves its performance. This approach yields state-of-the-art results, demonstrating high accuracies across various modalities in the stress classification task: 92.89% in Electrodermal Activity (EDA), 92.16% in Photoplethysmography (PPG), and 96.58% in all *** model decisions in biosignals is challenging compared to the image domain, where images are inherently more intuitive. Many Explainable AI (XAI) techniques, optimized for images, face difficulties when applied to biosignals. To address this, we employ human-engineered features for biosignals, grounded in the ‘Human Comprehensible Space’ concept, making explanations intuitively understandable. Furthermore, a survey conducted to statistically validate the comprehensibility of our XAI methods confirms their effectiveness in enhancing the accessibility of explanations. © 2024, The Authors. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become a crucial global health issue. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria can survive after antibiotic treatments, lowering drug efficacy and increasing lethal risks. A microfluidic water-in-oil emulsion droplet system can entrap microorganisms and antibiotics within the tiny bioreactor, separate from the surroundings, enabling independent assays that can be performed in a high-throughput manner. This study presents the development of a label-free dielectrophoresis (DEP)-based microfluidic platform to sort droplets that co-encapsulate Escherichia coli (E. coli) and ampicillin (Amp) and droplets that co-encapsulate Amp-resistant (AmpR) E. coli with Amp only based on the conductivity-dependent DEP force (FDEP) without the assistance of optical analyses. The 9.4% low conductivity (LC) Luria–Bertani (LB) broth diluted with 170 mM mannitol can maintain E. coli and AmpR E. coli growth for 3 h and allow Amp to kill almost all E. coli, which can significantly increase the LCLB conductivity by about 100 μS/cm. Therefore, the AmpR E. coli/9.4%LCLB/Amp where no cells are killed and the E. coli/9.4%LCLB/Amp-containing droplets where most of the cells are killed can be sorted based on this conductivity difference at an applied electric field of 2 MHz and 100 Vpp that generates positive FDEP. Moreover, the sorting ratio significantly decreased to about 50% when the population of AmpR E. coli was equal to or higher than 50% in droplets. The conductivity-dependent DEP-based sorting platform exhibits promising potential to probe the ratio of AmpR E. coli in an unknown bacterial sample by using the sorting ratio as an index. © 2024 by the authors.

The dynamics of coherent acoustic phonons in the Bi2Se3 layered crystal system are investigated. The deteriorations of Meniere's disease (MD) cochlear symptoms (i.e., hearing loss and tinnitus) are progressive. We proposed sample entropy (SampEn) of transiently evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE) for quantitative assessment of MD cochlear symptoms without subject-dependent variations and system-dependent differences to prevent impacts of MD cochlear symptoms on life qualities of patients. This cross-sectional study based in a single center investigated 1) the preferred parameters for estimation of TEOAE SampEn and 2) resulting performances in diagnosing of MD cochlear symptoms. Nineteen normal (38 ears) and 29 (29 ears) unilateral definitive MD were recruited between June 2021 and March 2022. Hearing loss and tinnitus of MD were measured by pure-tone audiometry and described by chief complaint, respectively. TEOAE SampEn were estimated using different parameters of data size N = 772, template length m from 1 to 9 and similarity tolerance r from 0.1 to 1. Areas under receiver operating characteristic curves (AUROCs) were used to evaluate the performances of TEOAE SampEn in diagnosing MD cochlear symptoms. In terms of result, TEOAE SampEn based on the parameters of (N = 772, m = 2, r = 0.2) resulted in the maximum AUROCs = 0.7732 and 0.8421 in diagnosing MD hearing loss and tinnitus, respectively. In conclusion, TEOAE SampEn provides good performances and demonstrates great potential of assessment for MD cochlear symptoms. In future, recruitment of more participants, especially MD with tinnitus only without hearing loss, and other OHC-related disease, is necessary to further support the findings of this study. © 2023 The Author(s)
