The implementation of a simple double-slit for light interference experiments by using just three off-the-shelf, non-optical components is described. Thanks to the simplicity of the assemblage, the distance between the slits and slit width can be easily modified. The device can be used in teaching laboratories for quantitative experiments, as well as in demonstration classes. © 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Faithful, accurate, and successful cardiac biomechanics and electrophysiological simulations require patient-specific geometric models of the heart. Since the cardiac geometry consists of highly-curved boundaries, the use of high-order meshes with curved elements would ensure that the various curves and features present in the cardiac geometry are well-captured and preserved in the corresponding mesh. Most other existing mesh generation techniques require computer-aided design files to represent the geometric boundary, which are often not available for biomedical applications. Unlike such methods, our technique takes a high-order surface mesh, generated from patient medical images, as input and generates a high-order volume mesh directly from the curved surface mesh. In this paper, we use our direct high-order curvilinear tetrahedral mesh generation method [1] to generate several second-order cardiac meshes. Our meshes include the left ventricle myocardia of a healthy heart and hearts with dilated and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. We show that our high-order cardiac meshes do not contain inverted elements and are of sufficiently high quality for use in cardiac finite element simulations. © 2021 Creative Commons.

Distinct selectivity to the spin angular momenta of photons have garnered significant attention in recent years, for their relevance in basic science and for imaging and sensing applications. While nonlocal metasurfaces with strong chiral responses to the incident light have been reported, these responses are typically limited to a narrow range of incident angles. In this study, we demonstrate a nonlocal metasurface that showcases strong chirality, characterized by circular dichroism larger than 0.6, over a wide range of incident angles ±5o. Its quality factor, circular dichroism and resonant frequency can be optimized by design. These findings pave the way to further advance the development of valley-selective optical cavities and augmented reality applications. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Companies with the Trading Suspension (SP), and Non-Compliance (NC) sign posted might run a risk of bankruptcy. One would want to predict the SP or NC sign posted before it is posted to help in investing decision. In this paper, we introduce the prediction system using fuzzy hybrid operator with swarm intelligence optimization algorithm. In particular, we utilize the gamma operator with firefly, grey wolf, and social spider algorithms. The gamma operator with social spider yields 92.45% correct prediction result. We also compare our result with the support vector machine (SVM). The SVM yields 100% correct prediction. Although, the gamma operator is worse than SVM, the gamma operator can provide an influence information of inputs to the prediction output. The gamma operator provides that the debt ratio from the 8th previous quarter is the most influential input to the prediction whereas that from the 2nd to 6th previous quarters have small effect to the prediction. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Analog computing based on wave interactions with metamaterials has been raising significant interest as a low-energy, ultrafast platform to process large amounts of data. Engineered materials can be tailored to impart mathematical operations of choice on the spatial distribution of the impinging signals, but they also require extended footprints and precise large-area fabrication, which may hinder their practical applicability. Here we show that the nonlocal response of a compact scatterer can be engineered to impart operations of choice on arbitrary impinging waves, and even to solve integro-differential equations, whose solution is observed in the scattered fields. The lack of strongly resonant phenomena makes the response robust, and the compact nature opens to scalability and cascading of these processes, paving the way to efficient, compact analog computers based on engineered microstructures.

Drying has been an eco-friendly and cost-efficient method to reduce post-harvest losses of agricultural crops. In various countries, the technique has been widely utilized in the form of Solar Dryer Dome (SDD) buildings. Accurate indoor microclimate forecasting is very important to implement smart control systems in SDDs that can maintain the ideal conditions, as the availability of solar energy is limited only at daytimes and the temperature may drop significantly during nighttimes in remote areas. This study investigates the usefulness of chemically modified xanthan gum (XG), a natural polysaccharide known for its mucoadhesive and swelling characteristics, in gastroretentive drug delivery systems. XG was modified through amidation using triethanolamine in the presence of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) as a coupling agent. The resulting amidated xanthan gum (AXG) exhibited significantly improved physicochemical properties, including reduced hydrophilicity, enhanced thermal stability, and increased crystallinity, as confirmed by FTIR, DSC, XRD, and ^1H NMR analyses. Sodium alginate beads were prepared via the ionotropic gelation and subsequently coated with XG and AXG through diffusion-controlled interfacial complexation. The formulations demonstrated sustained drug release (74.8–93.1 %), low densities (0.524–0.40 g/cm3), minimal lag time (5.12–6.18 s), and high drug encapsulation efficiency (58.01–66.43 %). AXG-coated formulations exhibited a higher swelling index (161 %) compared to XG-coated formulations (119 %). SEM analysis revealed the presence of AXG fragments on the bead surfaces. Ex vivo studies confirmed superior mucoadhesive properties of AXG (58 %) compared to XG (46 %). In conclusion, AXG-based composites outperformed XG in achieving targeted and controlled drug delivery to the stomach. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Recent interest in developing fast spintronic devices and laser-controllable magnetic solids has sparked tremendous experimental and theoretical efforts to understand and manipulate ultrafast dynamics in *** of spin dynamics in the terahertz(THz)frequency range are particularly important for elucidating microscopic pathways toward novel device ***,we review THz phenomena related to spin dynamics in rare-earth orthoferrites,a class of materials promising for antiferromagnetic *** expand this topic into a description of four key elements.(1)We start by describing THz spectroscopy of spin excitations for probing magnetic phase transitions in thermal *** acoustic magnons are useful indicators of spin reorientation transitions,electromagnons that arise from dynamic magnetoelectric couplings serve as a signature of inversion-symmetry-breaking phases at low temperatures.(2)We then review the strong laser driving scenario,where the system is excited far from equilibrium and thereby subject to modifications to the free-energy *** pathways for ultrafast laser manipulation of magnetic order are discussed.(3)Furthermore,we review a variety of protocols to manipulate coherent THz magnons in time and space,which are useful capabilities for antiferromagnetic spintronic applications.(4)Finally,new insights into the connection between dynamic magnetic coupling in condensed matter and the Dicke superradiant phase transition in quantum optics are *** presenting a review on an array of THz spin phenomena occurring in a single class of materials,we hope to trigger interdisciplinary efforts that actively seek connections between subfields of spintronics,which will facilitate the invention of new protocols of active spin control and quantum phase engineering.

Using tracheal breathing sounds and anthropometric information for screening obstructive sleep apnoea during wakefulness

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a common yet underdiagnosed disorder. Undiagnosed OSA significantly increases perioperative morbidity and mortality for OSA patients undergoing surgery, requiring full anaesthesia. Tracheal breathing sounds characteristics during wakefulness have shown a high correlation with the apnoea–hypopnea index (AHI), while they are also affected by the anthropometric parameters, e.g., sex, age, etc. This study investigates the effects of the anthropometric parameters on our new quick objective OSA screening tool during wakefulness. Breathing sounds of 122 individuals (71 with AHI 15 as OSA) were recorded during wakefulness in the supine position. The spectra and bi-spectra of 81 (47 non-OSA) individuals’ signals, which were randomly selected, were analysed as a training dataset to extract the most significant features with the lowest sensitivity to the anthropometric parameters. Using a support vector machine (SVM) classifier, these features resulted in 72.1, 64.7 and 77.5% testing classification accuracy, sensitivity and specificity, respectively. We also investigated classifying subjects into subgroups related to each anthropometric parameter and incorporating a voting procedure. This routine resulted in 83.6, 74.5 and 90.1% testing classification accuracy, sensitivity and specificity, respectively. In conclusion, it is possible to positively utilise the anthropometric information to enhance the classification accuracy for a reliable OSA screening procedure during wakefulness. © 2019, © 2019 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
