Development of teaching materials for improving motivation to learn electromagnetics using ict

In this research, we have been developed teaching materials for electromagnetics that demonstrate theories using real-world actual applications (capacitors, coils, piezoelectric elements, Wireless Power Transfer(WPT), WiFi, direct-current motor, etc.) presented as animations and video data via Web services. Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and JavaScript were used to create the Web services for teaching materials. Recently, the lack of academic ability of Japanese engineering course students has become a large social problem at Japanese higher education. In particular, in the field of electrical engineering education, the visualization and mathematical abilities of students have been declining remarkably. In addition, today's teaching materials for educational institutions in Japan tend to reply primarily on rote learning. However, we consider that rote learning is not the primary method for university education. We tested our new developed materials on students learning motivation of electromagnetics and evaluated their effectiveness with some questionnaires. It was clear that the new teaching method has effectiveness for increasing learning motivation of Electromagnetics. © 2020 The Institute of electrical Engineers of Japan.

Thermalization of fluorescent protein exciton-polaritons at room temperature

Fluorescent proteins (FPs) have recently emerged as a serious contender for realizing ultra-low threshold room temperature exciton-polariton condensation and lasing. Our contribution investigates the thermalization of FP microcavity exciton-polaritons upon optical pumping under ambient conditions. We realize polariton cooling using a new FP molecule, called mScarlet, coupled strongly to the optical modes in a Fabry-Pérot cavity. Interestingly, at the threshold excitation energy (fluence) of ~9 nJ/pulse (15.6 mJ/cm2), we observe an effective temperature, Teff ~350 ± 35 K close to the lattice temperature indicative of strongly thermalized exciton-polaritons at equilibrium. This efficient thermalization results from the interplay of radiative pumping facilitated by the energetics of the lower polariton branch and the cavity Qfactor. Direct evidence for dramatic switching from an equilibrium state into a metastable state is observed for the organic cavity polariton device at room temperature via deviation from the Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics at k1 = 0 above the threshold. Thermalized polariton gases in organic systems at equilibrium hold substantial promise for designing room temperature polaritonic circuits, switches, and lattices for analog simulation. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.

Nowadays, biometric identification is utilized in several applications especially in security system. One of the recently popular biometric identifications is person identification from ear because each person has a unique ear and it does not change overtime. In addition, we believe that not only side view ear image is useful in identifying a person, but a front view ear image is also useful. Hence, in this paper, we develop two convolutional neural networks (CNNs) schemes to recognize front view and side view human ear. From the blind test data set results, we found that the system based on front view images provides 84% correct. Meanwhile, the side view image-based system yields 80% correct classification on the same data set. © 2019 IEEE.

Effects of Hydrogen on Endurance Characteristics in NAND Flash Memories

This study comprehensively investigates the effect of hydrogen content in forming gas annealing (FGA) on the endurance of NAND flash memories by statistically analyzing the transconductance (G_m,max) characteristics. The G_m,max degradation (ΔG_m,max) worsened with higher cycling temperature, delayed time period from erasing to programming (t_EP) operation, and higher word-line bias (V_A) during t_EP. Moreover, these effects become more pronounced as the hydrogen content in FGA increases. Using the measured G_m,max distributions and Monte -Carlo TCAD technology, the activation energy (E_A) of oxide damage creation can be extracted. The extracted E_A values were 50 meV and 160 meV for the diluted (4%) and pure (100%) hydrogen samples, respectively. This suggests that a higher hydrogen concentration results in more ionized hydrogen atoms remaining in the oxide layer. During t_EP, these hydrogen ions can drift near the Si/SiO₂ surface, where they may react to form trap states. E_A is revealed to have a linear relationship with respect to V_A, where the slope is independent of the hydrogen content in FGA. © 2022 The Author(s). BACKGROUD AND OBJECTIVES:As patients with diabetes are at a significantly higher risk of cardiovascular diseases than those without diabetes, it is important to gain a clinical understanding of the differential effects of smoking cessation on several risk factors between patients with and without diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS:Patients who participated in a smoking cessation program received an assessment of the outcomes of interest. The outcomes were changes in metabolic parameters and renal function from baseline to 6-month follow-up after the smoking cessation program. RESULT:A total of 1954 patients joined the smoking cessation program, and 1381 patients were in the smoking cessation failure (SCF) group and 573 were in the smoking cessation success (SCS) group. The decrease in HbA1c after smoking cessation was only observed in patients with diabetes. Smoking cessation was also associated with a significant decrease in LDL cholesterol in patients with diabetes. In terms of renal function, smoking cessation was associated with an improvement in eGFR, and the trend was similar in patients with and without diabetes. CONCLUSION:Successful smoking cessation was associated with improvement in renal function. Moreover, it was associated with improvements in HbA1c and LDL cholesterol in patients with diabetes, despite significant weight gain.

Radio-transparent dipole antenna based on a metasurface cloak

Antenna technology is at the basis of ubiquitous wireless communication systems and sensors. Radiation is typically sustained by conduction currents flowing around resonant metallic objects that are optimized to enhance efficiency and bandwidth. However, resonant conductors are prone to large scattering of impinging waves, leading to challenges in crowded antenna environments due to blockage and distortion. Metasurface cloaks have been explored in the quest of addressing this challenge by reducing antenna scattering, but with limited performance in terms of bandwidth, footprint and overall scattering reduction. Here we introduce a different route towards radio-transparent antennas, in which the cloak itself acts as the radiating element, drastically reducing the overall footprint while enhancing scattering suppression and bandwidth, without sacrificing other relevant radiation metrics compared to conventional antennas. This technique offers a new application of cloaking technology, with promising features for crowded wireless communication platforms and noninvasive sensing. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the top ten leading causes of death in countries worldwide. There are several methods used by physicians to diagnose CAD. One common method is the use of X-ray angiogram (XRA) images. When employing a computer-aided automatic analysis method to locate blood vessels in XRA images, problems such as complex background noise, low contrast, and difficulty in separating blood vessels from the background are encountered, especially for blood vessels with a low contrast to the background noise. In this study, we used various image preprocessing methods to highlight blood vessels from complex backgrounds and different types of blood vessel, followed by the employment of four superpixel segmentation methods to partition an image into multiple segments, and finally the utilization of Weighted Voting to determine the best superpixel algorithm. A genetic algorithm was used to identify the best weights by which to determine the locations of blood vessels in images of cardiac catheterization. Our proposed method achieved an average F1-score of 73.4% in the analysis of five patients, which was better than the other superpixel algorithms tested. The results of this research will be helpful for future SYNTAX score analysis. © 2023

This paper presents the performance of the Source Affine Image reconstruction algorithm (SAFFIRE) on an epileptogemc foci time-varying source localization. This algorithm is based on the recursive implementation of the mimmum mean squared error (MMSE) estimator. The SAFFIRE algorithm is applied on a synthetic EEG signal originated from different sources' scenarios. The simulation results show how the algorithm is able to localize and track the sources as they vary with time with a high resolution even if the sources are located close to each other. © 2019 IEEE.

Patient-specific left ventricle (LV) myocardial models have the potential to be used in a variety of clinical scenarios for improved diagnosis and treatment plans. Cine cardiac magnetic resonance (MR) imaging provides high resolution images to reconstruct patient-specific geometric models of the LV myocardium. With the advent of deep learning, accurate segmentation of cardiac chambers from cine cardiac MR images and unsupervised learning for image registration for cardiac motion estimation on a large number of image datasets is attainable. Here, we propose a deep leaning-based framework for the development of patient-specific geometric models of LV myocardium from cine cardiac MR images, using the Automated Cardiac Diagnosis Challenge (ACDC) dataset. We use the deformation field estimated from the VoxelMorph-based convolutional neural network (CNN) to propagate the isosurface mesh and volume mesh of the end-diastole (ED) frame to the subsequent frames of the cardiac cycle. We assess the CNN-based propagated models against segmented models at each cardiac phase, as well as models propagated using another traditional nonrigid image registration technique. © 2021, CC BY.
