Changes in coal seam hardness cause fluctuations in the feed resistance at the drill bit during the drilling process, leading to unstable feeding speed. This paper proposes a robust dynamic output feedback controller to suppress disturbances caused by the variations in coal seam hardness in the feed system. Firstly, an unknown parameter measuring coal seam hardness is introduced, and an uncertain model of the feeding system is established based on the finite element model of the drill string. By designing weighted functions based on industrial field requirements and constructing a generalized plant, the controller achieves loop shaping, reducing the low-frequency impact of coal seam hardness variations on the feed system and suppressing the systems resonance peak. Simulation results demonstrate that the controller effectively suppresses parameter variations and external disturbances caused by changes in coal seam hardness, achieving stable control of the drilling speed. © 2024 IEEE.

Reducing unwanted skin irritation during transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) is essential for providing clear virtual sensations in virtual reality (VR) systems, leading to a more immersive experience. We investigated general characteristics of parameters in the TES, including the number of channels and pulse width of the stimulation signal, which may affect reducing skin irritation with 3D electromagnetic computer simulation with numerical neuron models. The results showed that the increasing number of channels and the declining pulse width attenuated skin irritation to 44.5 %. © 2023 IEEE.

Dynamic origin-destination matrix estimation for networks operating under free-flow conditions using macroscopic flow dynamics

The origin-destination (OD) matrix is a crucial requirement for efficient transportation planning, however its estimation still remains one of the most challenging tasks in transportation. This paper proposes a novel methodology for the estimation of dynamic OD matrices. The proposed methodology integrates disaggregated measurements from stationary sensors, e.g. loop detectors, with a macroscopic model that associates OD demands with Traffic counts on specific network links. We investigate networks that operate under free-flow conditions, hence the dynamic OD matrix estimation problem is formulated as a linear mathematical program. Finally, we reformulate the problem to obtain a computationally cheap quadratic programming problem that allows real-time estimation of OD matrices within the time-window under study. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our methodology through a literature network, showcasing its ability to accurately capture travel patterns in a computationally efficient manner, allowing informed decision-making processes in transportation planning and management.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with full-duplex relays (FDRs) are pivotal in overcoming connectivity challenges by dynamically establishing effective communication channels. However, despite their potential in network performance via trajectory optimization, integrating energy consumption models for UAV-mounted FDRs remains unexplored, crucial for trajectory design adhering to existing energy constraints. To this end, we introduce an energy-aware trajectory optimization framework to maximize network performance and user fairness within the UAV's energy constraints. Specifically, we present a detailed energy consumption model describing the operational needs of UAV-mounted FDRs and formulate a joint time-division multiple access (TDMA) user scheduling-UAV trajectory optimization problem considering the power dynamics of UAV-mounted FDRs. Finally, our simulation results highlight the role of energy awareness in achieving optimal trajectory and scheduling, contributing to UAV-mounted FDRs' performance in future networks. © 2024 IEEE.

Outdated testing methods hinder the success rate of carbonized cable preparation in low-voltage arc fault tests,leading to incomplete tests and high failure *** address this issue,we finely categorized the preparation results of carbonized cable specimens by analyzing the experimental phenomena during the carbonization process and assessing the impact of high-voltage energization time on the outcomes,presenting a process control strategy aimed at optimizing the preparation results of carbonized cable *** method utilizes three periodic moving algorithms(root-mean-square,average,and shoulder percentage)to classify the cable specimens into four preparation categories:open-circuit carbonization,under-carbonization,short-circuit carbonization,and successful *** high-voltage energization time during carbonization or secondary carbonization was adjusted to optimize the preparation of the carbonized cables by considering different discrimination ***,the proposed method was tested on a purpose-built carbonized cable experimental platform,which confirmed its effectiveness in differentiating the preparation outcomes of the carbonized cable specimens and improving the success rate of the carbonized cable *** proposed method has significant potential for application in low-voltage arc fault test systems.

Circadian rhythms are endogenous 24-hour oscillations that are vital for maintaining our overall well-being. They are driven at a high level by a core circadian clock located in the brain, making their dynamics difficult to track. Various modeling approaches exist to predict the dynamics, but as the models are typically designed on population-level data, their performance is diminished on the individual level. This paper proposes a method for learning personalized latent state models, i.e., dynamical models that explicitly use latent state variables, that relate circadian input(s) to observable biometric signals. Our models combine an autoencoder with a recurrent neural network and use the pair to model the salient dynamics present in the data. We validate our method using experimental data, where the circadian input is light and the biometric data are actigraphy signals. We demonstrate that our method results in models with low-dimensional latent state that can accurately reconstruct and predict the observable biometric signals. Further, we show that the oscillation of the learned latent state agrees with the subjects' circadian clock oscillation as estimated with melatonin *** relevance - This proposes a technique for personal-ized modeling of the circadian system with potential applications in feedback control and individualized circadian studies. © 2024 IEEE.

Discriminative Dimension Selection (DDS) has emerged as a powerful tool for identifying the most relevant features in high-dimensional datasets, enabling interpretable data analysis and visualization. This paper explores the application of DDS which utilizes overlapping clusters and dimensions to enhance the interpretability and performance of the K-means clustering algorithm. Our approach leverages the post-processing capabilities of K-means to selectively retain informative features and discard redundant or irrelevant ones. This refined feature set not only preserves the clustering performance of K-means but also enhances its interpretability and visualization. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method using a variety of datasets and compare its performance against traditional K-means and the proposed method Overlap-resolved Clustering (ORC). We also test with multiple cluster validity indices such as the Silhouette Coefficient Score (SS), Davies-Bouldin Index (DB), and Calinski-Harabasz Index (CH). Our results consistently show that ORC produces better clustering results and enhances the interpretability of the datasets. This study highlights the potential of DDS as a valuable tool for improving the interpretability and visualization of high-dimensional data analysis using K-means clustering. © 2024 IEEE.

To improve the performance of the original backtracking search algorithm (BSA), this work combines BSA with a centralized population initialization and an elitism-based local escape operator and proposes a new, improved variant of BSA called CiBSA. BSA's performance is improved by centralized population initialization regarding search capability, convergence speed, and capacity to jump out of the local optimum. The suggested algorithm's elitism-based local escape operator method prevents BSA searching slowness and enhances convergence rates and local search efficiency. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been tested on a set of 54 test suites. An extensive comparison with other recent meta-heuristics algorithms (MA) demonstrates that both methodologies substantially assist BSA in boosting the quality of its solutions and speeding up the convergence rate. The proposed CiBSA is then applied to a real-world problem: image segmentation using Kapur's entropy function. The proposed CiBSA is successfully applied to the segmentation of COVID-19 CT images using Kapur's entropy for grey-scale images. Considering the performance matrices Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), Structural Similarity Index (SSIM), Feature Similarity Index (FSIM), and Intersection over Union (IoU), the suggested CiBSA outperformed conventional MA algorithms. In COVID-19 CT image segmentation trials, CiBSA has superior segmentation capability and adaptability at varied threshold levels than other approaches. As a result, CiBSA has a lot of potential for enhancing COVID-19 diagnosis accuracy. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.
