The development of reliable, lightweight, and effective sensors is a vital step in effectively monitoring critical parameter changes. This review focuses on the utilization of tapered optical fiber as a material sensing platform. The fundamental concept of the tapered fiber sensor is based on the interaction of strong evanescent waves caused by the fiber's dimensional change. The primary goal of this review is to explore the potential of tapered optical fiber for biosensing applications. A number of tapered optical fiber configurations and operations have been reviewed in order to propose appropriate optical sensor designs for biosensing applications. Hence, this analysis could serve as a benchmark for a more thorough study of biosensing device development. © 2022 School of Science, IHU. All rights reserved.

Modular Extremely Large-Scale Array Communication:Near-Field Modelling and Performance Analysis

This paper investigates the wireless communication with a novel architecture of antenna arrays,termed modular extremely large-scale array(XLarray),where array elements of an extremely large number/size are regularly mounted on a shared platform with both horizontally and vertically interlaced *** module consists of a moderate/flexible number of array elements with the inter-element distance typically in the order of the signal wavelength,while different modules are separated by the relatively large inter-module distance for convenience of practical *** accurately modelling the signal amplitudes and phases,as well as projected apertures across all modular elements,we analyse the near-field signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)performance for modular XL-array *** on the non-uniform spherical wave(NUSW)modelling,the closed-form SNR expression is derived in terms of key system parameters,such as the overall modular array size,distances of adjacent modules along all dimensions,and the user's three-dimensional(3D)*** addition,with the number of modules in different dimensions increasing infinitely,the asymptotic SNR scaling laws are ***,we show that our proposed near-field modelling and performance analysis include the results for existing array architectures/modelling as special cases,e.g.,the collocated XL-array architecture,the uniform plane wave(UPW)based far-field modelling,and the modular extremely large-scale uniform linear array(XL-ULA)of *** simulation results are presented to validate our findings.

CAS-ViT: Convolutional Additive Self-attention Vision Transformers for Efficient Mobile Applications

Vision Transformers (ViTs) mark a revolutionary advance in neural networks with their token mixer’s powerful global context capability. However, the pairwise token affinity and complex matrix operations limit its deployment on resource-constrained scenarios and real-time applications, such as mobile devices, although considerable efforts have been made in previous works. In this paper, we introduce CAS-ViT: Convolutional Additive Self-attention Vision Transformers, to achieve a balance between efficiency and performance in mobile applications. Firstly, we argue that the capability of token mixers to obtain global contextual information hinges on multiple information interactions, such as spatial and channel domains. Subsequently, we propose Convolutional Additive Token Mixer (CATM) employing underlying spatial and channel attention as novel interaction forms. This module eliminates troublesome complex operations such as matrix multiplication and Softmax. We introduce Convolutional Additive Self-attention(CAS) block hybrid architecture and utilize CATM for each block. And further, we build a family of lightweight networks, which can be easily extended to various downstream tasks. Finally, we evaluate CAS-ViT across a variety of vision tasks, including image classification, object detection, instance segmentation, and semantic segmentation. Our M and T model achieves 83.0%/84.1% top-1 with only 12M/21M parameters on ImageNet-1K. Meanwhile, throughput evaluations on GPUs, ONNX, and iPhones also demonstrate superior results compared to other state-of-the-art backbones. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach achieves a better balance of performance, efficient inference and easy-to-deploy. This article introduces a Generative Adversarial Network tailored for medical imaging, in particular designed to synthesize retinal images alongside side their segmented mask. Changes in coal seam hardness cause fluctuations in the feed resistance at the drill bit during the drilling process, leading to unstable feeding speed. This paper proposes a robust dynamic output feedback controller to suppress disturbances caused by the variations in coal seam hardness in the feed system. Firstly, an unknown parameter measuring coal seam hardness is introduced, and an uncertain model of the feeding system is established based on the finite element model of the drill string. By designing weighted functions based on industrial field requirements and constructing a generalized plant, the controller achieves loop shaping, reducing the low-frequency impact of coal seam hardness variations on the feed system and suppressing the systems resonance peak. Simulation results demonstrate that the controller effectively suppresses parameter variations and external disturbances caused by changes in coal seam hardness, achieving stable control of the drilling speed.

The majority of prior coded computation works treat stragglers as erasures over an erasure channel and ignore their partial computations. The whole speed of a computation network will still be limited due to different processing speeds of worker nodes. This paper presents a novel coded scheme for this problem to effectively leverage partial stragglers. It simultaneously embeds the maximum distance separable (MDS) codes and codes in the universally decodable matrices (UDMs) into the system. By imposing constraints on coding parameters, the coefficient matrix corresponding to any first kAkB products of encoded submatrices from worker nodes is full rank, when two input matrices are partitioned into kA and kB block-columns, respectively. Thus, it only requires the minimum kAkB products performed by worker nodes (including stragglers). Analysis results show that our scheme can achieve not only the optimal utilization of partial computations of worker nodes, but also the optimal straggler resilience capability. © 2023 IEEE.

Reconstructing the mandible after the surgical removal of diseased sections is crucial for restoring functions such as chewing, speech, and facial integrity. However, achieving consistent bone union remains a significant challenge. This study hypothesizes that optimizing donor bone cuts, specifically through improved positioning and cut plane orientation, can enhance bone union. To test this hypothesis, we present a novel workflow that leverages Bayesian optimization. Applied to a mandibular body defect case, this approach integrates virtual reconstruction, remeshing, and biomechanical simulation, achieving up to a 75% increase in predicted bone union propensity during a chewing cycle. Our findings indicate that donor cut planes warrant greater emphasis in surgical plan-ning. Furthermore, optimization underscores the potential of this patient-specific, data-driven method to advance bone healing in mandibular reconstruction. © 2025 IEEE.
