The study examined various filtering methods applied to ECG signals;the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia dataset included two channels to reduce noise and artifacts while maintaining critical waveform characteristics. Initial filtering included a notch filter and a bandpass filter. Advanced filters such as Savitzky-Golay, Wavelet, Kalman, Wiener, and combined Wiener-Golay were used for noise reduction. Results showed that the Kalman filter performed best with an average SNR of 21.40 dB, while the Wavelet method worked well on channel 2. The Wiener filter was less effective due to its limited adaptability to changing noise. The combined Wiener-Savitzky-Golay filter showed a balanced performance but did not outperform the Kalman filter. Visual inspections of ECG signals from five patients revealed that the Kalman and Wavelet filters successfully maintained crucial morphological characteristics. The Savitzky-Golay filter offered effective smoothing but sometimes dampened the QRS complex, while the Wiener filter introduced high-frequency artifacts. © 2025 IEEE.

The purpose of this note is to correct an error made by Con et al. (2023), specifically in the proof of Theorem 9. Here we correct the proof but as a consequence we get a slightly weaker result. In Theorem9, we claimed that for integers k and n such that k q RS code that can decode from n - 2k + 1 insdel errors where (Formula presented). Here we prove the following. Theorem 1: For integers n and k q RS-code, where (Formula presented) is a prime power, that can decode from n - 2k + 1 adversarial insdel errors. Note that the exponent of n is 4k - 3 whereas in Theorem 9 it is 4k - 4. For constant dimensional codes, the field size is of order O(n4k-3) , and in particular, for k = 2 the field size is of order O(n5) . © 1963-2012 IEEE.

The ability to handle threats, such as disinformation, manipulation of public opinion, and disruption of critical supplies, is becoming increasingly important, thus, necessitating, among other strategies, efforts to establish a proper risk communication to the public. This paper addresses the need for more empirical research in this area to contribute to the development of an in-depth understanding of public risk communication that includes information-related threats and cyber issues. The study involves officials of three public organizations entrusted with safety and security in society: the police, the rescue service, and the county administrative board of a county in the middle of Sweden. The results detail the recognition of risks to be communicated, the organization of the communication process, the messages that these actors seek to bring forth, and to whom as well as challenges of public risk communication in the digital era. The findings indicate that information-related and cyber risks are increasingly essential to consider as an additional layer of public communication. Two implications emerged as particularly important: (1) all communication about risks and crises must consider the systemic risk of mis- and disinformation, and (2) tailored communication about the risks interrelated with disinformation should use human-centered, dialogue-based, and moderated approaches. Further research can focus on associated challenges, considering the distribution of responsibilities, inter-organizational information sharing and cooperation, and the possibly stochastic effects on critical (information) infrastructures and, ultimately, societal values. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2025.

Feedback optimization aims at regulating the output of a dynamical system to a value that minimizes a cost function. This problem is beyond the reach of the traditional output regulation theory, because the desired value is generally unknown and the reference signal evolves according to a gradient flow using the system's real-time output. This paper complements the output regulation theory with the nonlinear small-gain theory to address this challenge. Specifically, the authors assume that the cost function is strongly convex and the nonlinear dynamical system is in lower triangular form and is subject to parametric uncertainties and a class of external disturbances. An internal model is used to compensate for the effects of the disturbances while the cyclic small-gain theorem is invoked to address the coupling between the reference signal, the compensators, and the physical system. The proposed solution can guarantee the boundedness of the closed-loop signals and regulate the output of the system towards the desired minimizer in a global sense. Two numerical examples illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Stable Stochastic MPC for Uncertain Wind Energy Conversion System Over Whole Operating Regions

The stochastic uncertainty of wind speed presents a great challenge for achieving reliable power control in wind energy conversion system (WECS). Due to the excellence in handling the uncertainties based on probabilistic descriptions, stochastic model predictive control (SMPC) has been regarded as a promising strategy for WECS. However, owing to fluctuation characteristic of wind speed, operating points commonly change in WECS. Thus, an important limitation of applying SMPC to WECS stems from the fact that feasibility and stability of the traditional SMPC can only be ensured at one single predesigned operating point. Regarding this issue, a stable SMPC strategy for uncertain WECS is proposed in this paper to ensure the feasibility and stability of WECS under changing operating points over the whole operating regions. A Luenberger observer is employed to estimate model-plant mismatch introduced by linearization process, while a tube-based control framework is deployed to cope with stochastic wind speed disturbance. The feasibility of SMPC is ensured by incorporating artificial steady targets as optimization variables, while the stability of WECS is guaranteed by modifying the cost function and extending the terminal constraint. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is validated through simulations and experiments under different scenarios. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

Identifying spatiotemporal differences in brain functional dynamics corresponding to two tasks is critical for under-standing how specific neural processes contribute to distinct tasks or cognitive functions. Traditional methods rely on imposing assumptions and limits on the location and timing of activities, while machine-learning-based methods generally lack offering interpretable insights. This highlights the need for new data-driven approaches to capture spatial and temporal differences in brain activity between two tasks, while also providing interpretable explanations of the neural processes underlying these differences. In this work, we formulate the problem of finding the spatial and temporal differences in the dynamics of brain function corresponding to two motor imagery (MI) tasks (left hand movement vs right hand movement) as a discriminative discrete basis problem (DDBP). We apply the data-driven asymmetric discriminative associative algorithm (ADASSO) to EEG data collected during these tasks to uncover the key functional components of the brain's functional dynamics that differentiate between them. Results suggest that hand movements are strongly associated with high-confidence activation in the motor cortex, verifying the effectiveness of the ADASSO algorithm in identifying the location and timing of cortical activities that distinguish between the two task classes.

The neuron doctrine defines the neuron as the basic unit of the nervous system, which drives the dynamic behavior of our organs. This has led to neurons becoming the focus of modern neuroscience research and to the rise of neurocomputing, in which we try to digitally simulate human behavior. The goal being to better understand the human nervous system and gain more control over neuron-related diseases, helping doctors establish faster and more reliable medical diagnoses. In this context, we aim to simulate eye diseases and vision problems by convolving input images using a new class of neural networks based on a variable structure model of neurons presented in [1]. In this work, we focus on recreating the common convolution filters as a first step. This is the first time in neurocomputing literature that dendritic neurons have been used for dynamic convolution kernels generation and eye diseases simulation. We start with a presentation of our upgrades to the model’s flexibility and accuracy. Then, we propose a novel kernel generator algorithm to convolve the input images. Finally, we show its promising results in creating the outline, pixelization, and night convolution kernels, as well as control some metrics, including brightness and data retention. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

With increasingly challenging applications for quadrotors, higher requirements are emerging for tracking accuracy and safety. While high accuracy is a prerequisite for complex tasks, safety is ensured through tolerance to actuator faults and resistance to external disturbances. In this article, adaptive robust control (ARC) integrated with Gaussian processes (GPs), i.e., ARC-GP, is proposed to achieve enhanced accuracy, fault tolerance, and anti-disturbance. These three requirements are interrelated and affected by uncertainties. The primary idea of this article is to categorize uncertainties into parametric and nonparametric types, which are then addressed through parameter adaptation and GP, respectively. First, a detailed dynamic model is established, including actuator models that reflect different types of faults corresponding to changes in different physical parameters. Then, parameter adaptation is designed, with direct and indirect methods adopted for different parameters. In particular, the actuator parameters are effectively estimated to achieve targeted fault compensation. Regarding GP for nonparametric uncertainties, its model parameters are also updated via parameter adaptation. The GP thereby also learns parameter estimation errors along with external disturbances. Accordingly, ARC controllers are designed, for which robust feedback terms are constructed to further mitigate uncertainties on the basis of the covariances predicted by GP. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed ARC-GP can actively tolerate various types of actuator faults and better resist wind disturbances. © 2013 IEEE.

The ever-evolving Internet of Things (IoT) has ushered in a new era of intelligent manufacturing across multiple industries. However, the security and privacy of real-time data transmitted over the public channel of the industrial IoT (IIoT) remain formidable challenges. Existing lightweight protocols often omit one or more critical security features, such as anonymity and untraceability, and are susceptible to threats like desynchronization attacks. Additionally, they struggle to achieve an optimal balance between robust security and performance efficiency. To bridge these gaps, we introduce a new lightweight key agreement security scheme that guarantees secure access to the IIoT-enabled flexible manufacturing system (FMS). The strength of our scheme lies in its utilization of the authenticated encryption with associative data (AEAD) primitive, AEGIS, along with hash functions and physical unclonable functions, which secure the IIoT ecosystem. Additionally, our scheme offers flexibility in the form of the addition of new machines, password updates, and revocation in cases of theft or loss. A comprehensive security analysis demonstrates the efficacy of the proposed scheme in thwarting various attacks. The formal analysis, based on the Real-Or-Random (RoR) model, ensures session key indistinguishability, while the informal analysis highlights its resilience against known attacks. The comparative assessment demonstrate that the proposed scheme consistently outperforms the benchmark schemes across multiple dimensions, including security and functionality features, computational and communication overheads, and runtime efficiency. Specifically, the proposed scheme achieves peak performance enhancements of 77.55%, 44.73%, and 69.6% in computational overhead, runtime overhead, and communication overhead, respectively, underscoring its substantial performance advantages. © 2025 IEEE.

Progressive Semantic-Visual Alignment and Refinement for Vision-Language Tracking

In recent years, vision-language tracking has drawn emerging attention in the tracking field. The critical challenge for the task is to fuse semantic representations of language information and visual representations of vision information. For this purpose, several vision-language tracking methods perform early or late fusion to fuse visual and semantic features. However, these methods cannot take full advantage of the transformer architecture to excavate useful cross-modal context at various levels. To this end, we propose a new progressive joint vision-language transformer (PJVLT) to progressively align and refine visual embedding with semantic embedding for vision-language tracking. Specifically, to align visual signals with semantic signals, we propose to insert a semantic-aware instance encoder layer (SAIEL) into each intermediate layer of transformer encoder to perform progressive alignment of visual and semantic features. Furthermore, to highlight the multi-modal feature channels and patches corresponding to target objects, we propose a unified channel communication patch interaction layer (CCPIL), which is plugged into each intermediate layer of transformer encoder to progressively activate target-aware channels and patches of aligned multi-modal features for fine-grained tracking. In general, by progressively aligning and refining visual features with semantic features in the transformer encoder, our PJVLT can adaptively excavate well-aligned vision-language context at coarse-to-fine levels, therefore highlighting target objects at various levels for more discriminative tracking. Experiments on several tracking datasets show that the proposed PJVLT can achieve favorable performance in comparison with both conventional trackers and other vision-language trackers. © 1991-2012 IEEE.
