Economic Operation Strategy for Fast Charging Station Assisted by HESS Consisting of Retired Batteries Considering Concurrent Decommissioning

The wide adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) leads to the need for fast charging stations (FCSs) with battery energy storage systems (BESSs) due to charging anxieties and various charging behaviors and results in numerous retired batteries (RBs), necessitating the recycling solutions. To address these issues simultaneously, this study proposes an economic operation strategy for FCSs assisted by the RB-based hybrid energy storage system (HESS). In the proposed strategy, the FCS economic operational model is established, where a rolling mixed-integer linear programming (RMILP) mechanism is adopted considering uncertain charging behaviors, and the fuzzy C-means (FCM) algorithm is adopted to cluster RBs to form the RB-based HESS. Moreover, a concurrent decommissioning (CD) method is introduced for the RB-based HESS lifespan extension and cost reduction, with the assistance of a state-of-health (SOH)-based droop control for power allocation optimization among RBs. Finally, various simulation and experimental studies have been conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed economic operation strategy. The results demonstrate that FCSs with the RB-based HESSs achieve 67.32% annual net revenue (ANR) superiority over FCSs without BESSs and 12.69% ANR increment over those with BESSs. Moreover, the lifespan of the RB-based HESS can be extended by 11.23% with the CD method. © 2015 IEEE.

This article proposes an approach to address the current and the aggregated active power control challenge for large-scale inverter-based resources subjected to partially or completely loss of inverters and grid voltage variations. To address this problem, a distributed active power mechanism is proposed which generates desired inverters current. Then an adaptive mechanism distributes the voltage control input automatically between inverters in response to the partial or complete loss of inverters. An L 2 -gain-based controller is designed for each inverter to track the desired current and rejects the grid voltage disturbance. Simulation results show a significant robust tracking for collective active power and current.

Wireless Sensor Actuator Networks (WSANs) are sensitive to cyber threats due to present static encryption techniques. Adaptive security methods are required in WSAN settings to reduce evolving dangers and maintain data integrity. The paper introduces a novel method for encrypting WSAN data using AI and machine learning. Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks process data, Genetic Algorithms (GAs) optimize encryption, and Isolation Forests detect threats in real-time. The proposed system achieved remarkable performance, with scores of 98% data integrity, 96% error repair, and 95% threat detection accuracy. Encryption rates reach their max at 200 Mbps, with optimal resource usage (30% CPU, 25% RAM) and a 5% false positive rate. The proposed AI-driven security architecture improves data integrity, encryption speed, and overall security efficacy in WSANs, surpassing existing methods. The paper overcomes the limitations of static encryption methods and proposes a proactive protection mechanism against developing cyber threats, making a substantial contribution to WSAN security improvement. © 2024 IEEE.

A low-fabrication-temperature, high-gain chip-scale waveguide amplifier

The increasing prevalence of integrated on-chip optoelectronic devices has identified serious issues regarding inter-device transmission and coupling losses, highlighting an urgent need for on-chip waveguide amplifiers to compensate for these losses. Compared with other Er-based optical materials, erbium silicate is ideally suited to high-efficiency on-chip amplifiers and lasers because of its extremely high Er3+concentration(1022cm-3). Nevertheless, erbium silicate must be annealed above 1000℃ to crystallize and activate the Er3+, which damages other on-chip optoelectronic components and is not conducive to device ***, we report a low-fabrication-temperature, high-luminescence-efficiency gain material by adding Bi2O3to an erbium-ytterbium silicate mixed film. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed film crystallizes at 600℃ while the activation of Er3+is also achieved, which is the lowest activation temperature of on-chip waveguide amplifier to our knowledge. This material forms the basis for a new chip-scale waveguide amplifier design, with a theoretical multi-energy-level model of Bi-Er-Yb in the mixed thin films used to analyze its signal enhancement properties. We achieve a peak on-chip gain of 23 dB in a 3.3-mm-long waveguide under the pump and signal powers of 300 mW and 1 μW, respectively. These results highlight the potential of the proposed material for realizing on-chip amplifiers and lasers for large-scale nanophotonic integrated circuits.

The widespread deployment of 'Smart' Infrastructure, which uses networked computing systems to manage physical processes, has brought the onset of the fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). The 4IR relies on network interconnectivity, sensing, automation, robotics, and artificial intelligence to improve the productivity of modern manufacturing environments while reducing their workforce needs. Although beneficial, this growing adoption of 4IR has increased the complexity of Industrial Control systems (ICS), creating a huge workforce skills gap and causing 2.1 million manufacturing jobs to go unfulfilled by 2030. In the context of these challenges, this paper presents Cyber-Physical systems Training Range (CPS-TR), a cloud-based scalable student training platform to address 4IR needs, especially cybersecurity. The CPS-TR, built on Amazon Web Services (AWS), allows instructors to create experimental scenarios using virtual machines in AWS' Elastic Cloud (EC2), connected via AWS Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) based subnet providing an isolated communication environment. The CPSTR front-end provides a web application-based interface for students and instructors to design new material and perform experiments. This paper evaluates the performance and efficiency of the CPS-TR environment while showcasing an experiment teaching trainees about the safe use of the MQTT protocol from 4IR infrastructure software updates. The experimental evaluation shows that a trainee's network traffic volume while using the CPS-TR peaks at 2000 packets in a second;the network bandwidth requirements of a basic network connection suited for usage with mobile and tablet devices. The experimental evaluation also shows the VPC subnet communication peaks at eight packets in a second, with a cumulative packet count of fewer than 70 packets. This low VPC subnet utilization is in combination with EC2 *** VMs allows the CPS-TR operation costs to stay low. © 2023 IEEE.

As revenue on online advertisements continues to grow, Cybercriminals are mingling with the technology organisations to publish and run unsolicited adverts. Advertising companies actually have means of maximising visits to the advertiser' website but they have no control on the contents obtained from the ads auctioned to other providers such as yahoo and Facebook. Such contents may contain unauthorised scripts that may be rerouted to malicious sites where malware could be installed or malicious codes executed. This study therefore presents and implements an automated malvertisement detection system (MDS) by employing three common online detection tools or Intrusion Detection systems (IDSs) - Pulsedive, SucuriSiteCheck, and *** - to crawl malicious ads from 450 websites and represent the results on the confusion matrix. The malvertisement system is real and functional but less effective. When performance metrics were applied on the results. None of the IDSs outperformed the others in all the measures, suggesting that a single metrics is insufficient to objectively measure the effectiveness of the IDSs. An improved performance is expected when other set of IDSs is used in combination to build the MDS. © 2023 IEEE.

Arm-based electrocardiogram (ECG) offers a more comfortable and user-friendly alternative to traditional chest ECG for wearable cardiac monitoring in daily health applications. However, arm ECG faces challenges such as capturing extremely low-amplitude signals in the microvolt range and significant electromyogram (EMG) noise contamination. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of dry electrodes for arm and chest ECG monitoring using gold standard BIOPAC and proposed mDAQ systems. This study consisted of two phases. In Phase 1, we evaluated different dry electrode materials, including silver knit fabric and gold-plated electrodes, with six healthy adult participants (N = males and N =3 females) having upper arm circumference ranging from 27 to 42 cm. We used a BIOPAC system as a gold standard to collect arm ECG, upper arm EMG, and reference chest ECG during standardized movement tasks. Results showed that silver knit electrodes demonstrated superior QRS energy (0.705 ± 0.151), surpassing chest gel floating ECG QRS energy (0.328 ± 0.026), with lower EMG interference across movement conditions. In Phase 2, we developed a bioinstrumentation system (mDAQ) optimized for dry electrodes, demonstrating reliable ECG acquisition in both chest Lead I and arm configurations. -We validated our bioinstrumentation with sixteen healthy adult participants (N = 8 male and N = female. The mDAQ system maintained high signal consistency with a skewness effect size of 0.963 and showed a mean heart rate bias of only -1.842 bpm compared to the BIOPAC system, confirming its viability for wearable ECG monitoring applications. © 2024 Fraunhofer IZM.

As malicious operations become gradually very complex and involve advanced attack campaigns even on embedded systems and IoT, there is an increasing need for detecting malicious behavior on a system as it dynamically as it happens. In this paper, a Deep Learning based malicious behavior dynamic, run-time detection methodology is proposed that rely on the collection of Linux OS execution flow metrics/features like CPU, disk and memory usage and their association with ATT&CK MITRE knowledge base exploits. Using that approach, we can emulate the attack sequence of complex malicious activity and use the collected features to train Deep Learning models in order to classify execution operations at run-time as malicious or not. In the paper, we provide a feasibility study of the proposed solution based on the ATT&CK MITRE exploit attack graph emulation of the SysJoker backdoor malware and we train several Deep Learning models acting as classifiers. The provided results showed that in SysJoker use-case study of the proposed approach we managed to obtain more than 99% accuracy and less that 0.5% False Positive and False Negative Rates. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

Due to the rapid development of Internet of Things (IoT) technology during the last decade, there has been recorded a significant growth in the size of data collected by data warehouses, especially on the ones connected to sensors and meters on the energy sector. Querying such data, gathered by heterogeneous data sources is a complicated task in terms of space allocation, scalability, and integration. Big data analytics methods try to address the problem of querying big data by bringing together different data sources of different formats with a high level of abstraction. This paper presents a query engine that, on the one hand addresses the problem of querying big data stored on different and heterogeneous databases and on the other hand, simplifies the steps needed by the user for defining and executing queries on the aforementioned databases through an intuitive and easy to use interface, so as to facilitate high level analytical services.
