Fatigue is a prevalent issue that disrupts the overall well-being of individuals, leading to impaired cognitive functions such as learning, thinking, reasoning, remembering, and problem-solving. Chronic fatigue significantly increases the risk of accidents due to reduced focus, vigilance, and delayed reaction times. Traditional self-assessment methods for detecting fatigue are subjective and often unreliable. Recent advancements in neuroimaging have demonstrated that EEG signal analysis can objectively classify an individual's mental state. This research aims to develop a reliable and accurate EEG signal fatigue detection system. The EEG signals are decomposed into four levels using a one-dimensional discrete wavelet transform (1D-DWT). Textural features are extracted using binary pattern (BP) analysis and combined with seven statistical features. Then, these features are fed into a k-nearest neighbors (KNN) classifier to distinguish between the rest and fatigue states. Utilizing a dataset from the Mendeley Data website, the proposed system achieved an accuracy of 93.75%, precision between 93% and 95%, recall ranging from 92% to 95%, and an F1-score of 93% to 94%. This study highlights the potential of EEG-based systems to provide objective and accurate assessments of fatigue levels, thereby reducing the risks associated with chronic fatigue in daily life. © 2024 IEEE.

One of the main challenges of today's societies is the avoidance of the climate change since the climate crisis in now more evident than ever. Buildings have a large share of total energy consumption and, thus, it is obvious that actions should be taken to reduce their needs. Taking into consideration that nowadays data related to building's metrics are available in significantly higher rate than in the past, due to the advance of the related technologies, it is necessary to find ways to exploit them in order to draw useful inferences regarding their consumptions and how they can be reduced. For that reason, in this paper we present a Visualisation Engine, which offers a variety of visualisations over stored data. With the usage of the proposed Visualisation Engine, we envision to be able to conduct sufficient research over the data, to generate insightful information regarding their behaviour, and to assist the development of useful solutions towards the direction of more energy efficient buildings. © 2022 IEEE.

Pedestrian-related accidents account for an estimated 20-25% of the approximately 1.19 million road fatalities occurring annually, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced detection systems in surveillance and smart transportation to mitigate such incidents. The escalating demand for Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications (URLLC) in modern surveillance and transportation systems has become a solution to that problem but highlighted significant challenges in reducing inference times of machine learning models, particularly on constrained hardware. The maximum permissible latency for most vehicular applications ranges from 6 to 20 milliseconds based on the application. When tested on an 8GB RAM setup using the NTU, LLVIP, and VIRAT datasets, YOLOv8n achieved a minimum inference time of approximately 200 milliseconds per frame, making it unsuitable for URLLC applications despite 8GB RAM being an adequate hardware setup for edge devices. This research introduces a new two-stage pipeline that integrates Oculi's Sensing and Processing Unit (SPU) simulation with the YOLOv8n one-stage object detection model to enhance pedestrian detection, thereby addressing these challenges. By leveraging Regions of Interest (ROIs) generated by Oculi's SPU, our approach optimizes the input data for the YOLO model, substantially reducing computational overhead and thus making it suitable for URLLC applications. This integration can lead to a reduction in inference time by up to 93% in the tested frames when being compared to YOLOv8n pre-trained model. © 2024 IEEE.

Buildings equipped with battery energy storages (BES), thermal energy storages (TES), Photovoltaics (PV), solar thermal collectors (STC) and modulating heat pumps (HP) can significantly enhance the energy management potential. The energy management systems are mainly based on self-consumption maximization (SCM) and time-of-use arbitrage (ToUA). In terms of electricity pricing, dynamic pricing policies with two, three tariff zones or real-time pricing (RTP) are mostly applied. In this study, different control algorithms based on the concepts of SCM and ToUA are evaluated for a complex energy system consisted of BES, TES, PV, STC and HPs with variable-speed compressors. The performance of the proposed energy management strategies is assessed under ToU and RTP pricing regimes. © 2022 IEEE.

The effects of Alzheimer's disease (AD) are devastating, both personally and within the patient's family, as the disease progresses slowly over many years. It could significantly affect illness consequences and outcomes if detected early and accurately. Non-invasive medical testing often uses blood bio-samples because they are easy to collect and relatively cheap to analyze. This paper proposes a federated learning (FL)-based diagnostic model for AD using blood bio-samples. We have used blood bio-sample data sets downloaded from the ADNI website to test and compare the efficacy of our models. According to the enormous data collected for early AD detection, we used a hardware acceleration scheme to implement our FL model to fasten the training and testing operations. The hardware-Accelerator method is implemented using VHDL and Altera 10 GX FPGA. The simulation results show the proposed algorithms reach an accuracy and sensitivity of 89% and 87%, respectively, for early detection while taking less time to train than other state-of-The-Art algorithms. The proposed algorithms also consume 52-172 mW, which makes them suitable for constrained devices. © 2023 IEEE.

Despite advances in understanding the mechanisms of movement disorders, controlling voluntary movements remains challenging, with limited treatment options. However, the integration of machine learning (ML) accelerators into the braincomputer interface (BCI) pipeline offers promising solutions by harnessing the capabilities of ML algorithms to decode intended motor actions accurately. While there have been numerous efforts to classify intended hand movements into discrete classes, the challenging problem of decoding continuous hand kinematics has seen limited research efforts. Our work focuses on tackling this challenge using RAMAN, an energy-efficient tinyML accelerator. We demonstrate the successful decoding of macaque hand kinematics from the MC_Maze dataset on the Efinix Ti60 FPGA with RAMAN architecture. Our approach achieves an R2-score of 0.91 across 108 different maze configurations with a significantly low memory footprint of 230 KB, a latency of 86.7 ms while consuming 52.23 mW of power at a 5 MHz clock rate and 5.78 ms latency with the peak power efficiency of 102.34 GOp/s/W at 75 MHz and 75% pruning. © 2023 IEEE.

In an era of rapid technological innovation, this article provides a comprehensive examination of Gallium Nitride (GaN) Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors (MOSFETs). We apply Extreme Value Analysis on sets of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging data with the goal to extract indications in the data of future trends in the demand for EV charging. The datasets have been provided by DEI blue, a service designed to provide integrated e-mobility solutions to individuals, companies and public administration throughout Greece. Eventhough the data are limited as they have been collected during a period of only twelve months, our analysis still reveals trends in the data highlighting a probable seasonality. The seasonality is observed during periods of extreme heat, regional population mobility and incoming visitors. These occurrences impact technical aspects of battery efficiency, grid capacity and a shift of behavioural usage patterns. Our findings cannot be ignored by policy makers as they are expected to intensify in the years to come due to the fast-rising number of EVs in use. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

With the frequent occurrence of extreme events like natural disasters and man-made attacks, the resilience concept is attracting worldwide research attention. Thus, this paper proposes a resilient operation model for the power distribution network (PDN) to recover load and limit economic loss to the greatest possible extent. First, the line hardening measure is applied to strengthen the PDN to avoid the serious breakdown of distribution lines. In addition, a comprehensive single commodity flow-based reconfiguration approach is used which not only sets the buses connecting generation sources but also those at the end of broken lines as the slack buses. Then, the radiality of PDNs can still be guaranteed after reconfiguration. The resilience-oriented operation problem can be originally formulated as a nonlinear programming one while efficient linearization methods are applied to reduce computational burdens. Hence, the operation problem is reformulated as a mixed-integer linear programming one which will enjoy favorable solution performances. Finally, case studies on an IEEE 33 PDN including comparison cases with traditional benchmarks are done to show the effectiveness of our method. © 2023 IEEE.
