Due to the development of hacking programs, it has become easy to penetrate systems. Hence, there is a need for strong security mechanisms. The use of traditional passwords has become insufficient to secure systems. Biometric authentication is now widely used for security applications, and it has proven to be superior compared to traditional authentication methods. However, two issues need to be considered in biometric systems. The first is not to keep biometric data in its original form in the database. If biometric traits are hacked, they will no longer be of use. Biometric data should be kept in cancelable forms for reuse. The second issue is the reliance on a single biometric, which limits the verification accuracy. This can be solved by using a multimodal biometric system. Using steganography and cryptography, this paper introduces a cancelable multimodal biometric system. As voiceprints, facial images, and fingerprint images are used. In this paper, the verification is performed through the Mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) of the voiceprints. Steganography is used as a tool to secure features extracted from voiceprints by embedding them into the facial image using block-based singular value decomposition (BSVD). Double random phase encoding (DRPE) is utilized as an encryption algorithm to generate the final cancelable templates. To increase the level of system security, fingerprint images are used as random phase masks (RPMs). Verification is performed by estimating the correlation between registered and test MFCCs. The correlation value is then compared with a threshold value, which is calculated using the distribution curves for the genuine and imposter correlations. Equal error rate (EER) values close to zero and an area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (AROC) that is close to one are obtained from the simulation results, demonstrating the outstanding performance of the suggested system. Determinantal Point Process (DPP) is a powerful technique to enhance data diversity by promoting the repulsion of similar elements in the selected samples. Particularly, DPP-based Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) inference is used to identify subsets with the highest diversity. However, a commonly adopted presumption of all data samples being available at one point hinders its applicability to real-world scenarios where data samples are distributed across distinct sources with intermittent and bandwidth-limited connections. This paper proposes a distributed version of DPP inference to enhance multi-source data diversification under limited communication budgets. First, we convert the lower bound of the diversity-maximized distributed sample selection from matrix determinant optimization to a simpler form of the sum of individual terms. Next, a determinant-preserved sparse representation of selected samples is formed by the sink as a surrogate for collected samples and sent back to sources as lightweight messages to eliminate the need for raw data exchange. Our approach is inspired by the channel orthogonalization process of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems based on the Channel State Information (CSI). Extensive experiments verify the superiority of our scalable method over the most commonly used data selection methods, including GreeDi, Greedymax, random selection, and stratified sampling by a substantial gain of at least 12% reduction in Relative Diversity Error (RDE). This enhanced diversity translates to a substantial improvement in the performance of various downstream learning tasks, including multi-level classification (2%-4% gain in accuracy), object detection (2% gain in mAP), and multiple-instance learning (1.3% gain in AUC). © 2023 CCBY.

During the coal seam drilling process, the drill string is subject to compressive deformation, compounded by unpredictable variations in formation hardness and borehole wall friction, leading to challenges in maintaining a stable feeding speed. This paper presents a novel approach by introducing uncertain parameters to describe the effects of formation hardness and borehole wall friction. Drill string axial movement model is modeled as a polyhedral system based on a lumped parameter representation. To meet industrial performance requirements, we design a robust H∞ controller to achieve consistent feeding speed control. Our simulation results demonstrate the controller’s effectiveness in ensuring system stability despite fluctuations in formation hardness and drill string friction. © 2024 IEEE.

Class-incremental learning poses a significant challenge under an exemplar-free constraint, leading to catastrophic forgetting and sub-par incremental accuracy. Previous attempts have focused primarily on single-modality tasks, such as image classification or audio event classification. However, in the context of Audio-Visual Class-Incremental Learning (AVCIL), the effective integration and utilization of heterogeneous modalities, with their complementary and enhancing characteristics, remains largely unexplored. To bridge this gap, we propose the Multi-Modal Analytic Learning (MMAL) framework, an exemplar-free solution for AVCIL that employs a closed-form, linear approach. To be specific, MMAL introduces a modality fusion module that re-formulates the AVCIL problem through a Recursive Least-Square (RLS) perspective. Complementing this, a Modality-Specific Knowledge Compensation (MSKC) module is designed to further alleviate the under-fitting limitation intrinsic to analytic learning by harnessing individual knowledge from audio and visual modality in tandem. Comprehensive experimental comparisons with existing methods show that our proposed MMAL demonstrates superior performance with the accuracy of 76.71%, 78.98%, and 76.19% on AVE, Kinetics-Sounds, and VGGSounds100 datasets, respectively, setting new state-of-the-art AVCIL performance. Notably, compared to those memory-based methods, our MMAL, being an exemplar-free approach, provides good data privacy and can better leverage multi-modal information for improved incremental accuracy. © 2024 ACM.

Massive MIMO-OFDM Channel Acquisition with Time-Frequency Phase-Shifted Pilots

In this paper, we propose a channel acquisition approach with time-frequency phase-shifted pilots (TFPSPs) for massive multi-input multi-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems. We first present a triple-beam (TB) based channel tensor model, allowing for the representation of the space-frequency-time (SFT) domain channel as the product of beam matrices and the TB domain channel tensor. By leveraging the specific characteristics of TB domain channels, we develop TFPSPs, where distinct pilot signals are simultaneously transmitted in the frequency and time domains. Then, we present the optimal TFPSP design and provide the corresponding pilot scheduling algorithm. Further, we propose a tensor-based information geometry approach (IGA) to estimate the TB domain channel tensors. Leveraging the specific structure of beam matrices and the properties of TFPSPs, we propose a low-complexity implementation of the tensor-based IGA. We validate the efficiency of our proposed channel acquisition approach through extensive simulations. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of our approach. The proposed approach can effectively suppress inter-UT interference with low complexity and limited pilot overhead, thereby enhancing channel estimation performance. Particularly in scenarios with a large number of UTs, the channel acquisition method outperforms existing approaches by reducing the normalized mean square error (NMSE) by more than 8 dB. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

With the advent of autonomous vehicles on public roads imminent in the near future, special emphasis needs to be placed on addressing scenarios pertaining to mixed-traffic settings, comprised of human-driven and autonomous vehicles. In this paper, we address the problem of autonomous vehicle overtaking in a bidirectional mixed-traffic setting. We design a mixed-integer model predictive controller that maximizes the ego vehicle's velocity while prioritizing safety and accounting for driver comfort. The proposed approach: (i) operates in a limited sensing range while accounting for occlusion;(ii) is able to retract the overtake decision through a receding horizon approach;(iii) is robust to the variations in sensory input and driving behaviors of external agents due to behavior-dependent safety margins;and (iv) reduces to a mixed-integer optimization problem with linear constraints, yielding low computational complexity. We demonstrate the behavior of the proposed approach in a realistic traffic simulation environment. © 2022 American Automatic Control Council.

As one of the promising technologies, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) and simultaneous transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS) have attracted great interest. However, the existing RISs offer broadband tuning capability without filtering function due to the absence of radio frequency (RF) units, which easily leads to the unexpected tuning of the RIS undesired signals, especially in large-scale deployments. For the target network, it is difficult to obtain the parameter settings of RISs to serve other networks, which causes the unpredictability of the wireless environment. In this paper, we consider the covert communication in a STAR-RIS assisted random wireless network with randomly distributed blockages. We investigate the impact of STAR-RIS large-scale deployment on covert communication and leverage its inherent unpredictability for improving the covertness. We derive the average detection error probability for warden within the random wireless networks. Furthermore, we optimize the passive beamforming of STAR-RIS to maximize the covert communication rate, considering both direct and indirect line-of-sight (LoS) links. To address this, we employ an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm based on the semi-definite programming (SDP) method. Finally, numerical results demonstrate significant enhancements and increase covert capability achieved through the large-scale deployment of STAR-RIS. 2002-2012 IEEE.

Today's information society relies on cryptography to achieve security goals such as confidentiality, integrity, authentication, and non-repudiation for digital communications. Here, public-key cryptosystems play a pivotal role to share encryption keys and create digital signatures. However, quantum computers threaten the security of traditional public-key cryptosystems as they can tame computational problems underlying the schemes, i.e., discrete logarithm and integer factorization. The prospective arrival of capable-enough quantum computers already threatens today's secret communication in terms of their long-term secrecy when stored to be later decrypted. Therefore, researchers strive to develop and deploy alternative *** this work, we evaluate a key exchange protocol based on combining public-key schemes with physical-layer security, anticipating the prospect of quantum attacks: If a powerful quantum attacker cannot immediately obtain a private key, legitimate parties have a window of short-term secrecy to perform a physical-layer jamming key exchange (JKE) to establish a long-term shared secret. Thereby, the protocol constraints the computation time available to the attacker to break the employed public-key cryptography. In this paper, we outline the protocol, discuss its security, and point out challenges to be resolved. © 2025 IEEE.
