Parkinson's disease ranks as the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder globally. This research aims to develop a system leveraging Mixed Reality capabilities for tracking and assessing eye movements. In this paper, we present a medical scenario and outline the development of an application designed to capture eye-tracking signals through Mixed Reality technology for the evaluation of neurodegenerative diseases. Additionally, we introduce a pipeline for extracting clinically relevant features from eye-gaze analysis, describing the capabilities of the proposed system from a medical perspective. The study involved a cohort of healthy control individuals and patients suffering from Parkinson's disease, showcasing the feasibility and potential of the proposed technology for non-intrusive monitoring of eye movement patterns for the diagnosis of neurodegenerative *** relevance - Developing a non-invasive biomarker for Parkinson' s disease is urgently needed to accurately detect the disease's onset. This would allow for the timely introduction of neuroprotective treatment at the earliest stage and enable the continuous monitoring of intervention outcomes. The ability to detect subtle changes in eye movements allows for early diagnosis, offering a critical window for intervention before more pronounced symptoms emerge. Eye tracking provides objective and quantifiable biomarkers, ensuring reliable assessments of disease progression and cognitive function. The eye gaze analysis using Mixed Reality glasses is wireless, facilitating convenient assessments in both home and hospital settings. A Photovoltaic-Battery-Green Hydrogen nanogrid system is designed and modeled to investigate its potential as a decentralized energy solution able to satisfy the load profile of Near Zero Energy Buildings. Such a system could potentially maximize self-consumption through onsite power generation, which also achieves minimization of dependence on the central power grid. The proposed system includes battery and hydrogen energy storage for various purposes. Such a combination could succeed in satisfying both the need for rapid power supply when needed (through battery energy storage), but it can also provide seasonal energy storage when the weather pattern of available solar energy changes between summer and winter (through hydrogen energy storage). The Green Hydrogen subsystem includes electrolyzer and fuel cell units, both based on proton exchange membrane technology, a hydrogen storage unit, and auxiliary components. The proposed system generates 110 kg of hydrogen per year, with electrolyzer and fuel cell efficiencies (at full load design conditions) at 58.4% and 45.8%, respectively. Self-sufficiency rate is close to 100%, while self-consumption rate is slightly below 48%. © 2024 IEEE.

A Game-Theoretic Framework for Distributed Load Balancing: Static and Dynamic Game Models

Motivated by applications in job scheduling, queuing networks, and load balancing in cyber-physical systems, we develop and analyze a game-theoretic framework to balance the load among servers in both static and dynamic settings. In these applications, jobs/tasks are often held by selfish entities that do not want to coordinate with each other, yet the goal is to balance the load among servers in a distributed manner. First, we provide a static game formulation in which each player holds a job with a certain processing requirement and wants to schedule it fractionally among a set of heterogeneous servers to minimize its average processing time. We show that this static game is a potential game and admits a pure Nash equilibrium (NE). In particular, the best-response dynamics converge to such an NE after n iterations, where n is the number of players. We then extend our results to a dynamic game setting, where jobs arrive and get processed in the system, and players observe the load (state) on the servers to decide how to schedule their jobs among the servers in order to minimize their averaged cumulative processing time. In this setting, we show that if the players update their strategies using dynamic best-response strategies, the system eventually becomes fully load-balanced and the players' strategies converge to the pure NE of the static game. In particular, we show that the convergence time scales only polynomially with respect to the game parameters. Finally, we provide numerical results to evaluate the performance of our proposed algorithms under both static and dynamic settings. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Parallel I/O is a critical technique for moving data between compute and storage subsystems of supercomputers. With massive amounts of data produced or consumed by compute nodes, high-performant parallel I/O is essential. I/O benchmarks play an important role in this process;however, there is a scarcity of I/O benchmarks representative of current workloads on HPC systems. Toward creating representative I/O kernels from real-world applications, we have created h5bench, a set of I/O kernels that exercise hierarchical data format version 5 (HDF5) I/O on parallel file systems in numerous dimensions. Our focus on HDF5 is due to the parallel I/O library's heavy usage in various scientific applications running on supercomputing systems. The various tests benchmarked in the h5bench suite include I/O operations (read and write), data locality (arrays of basic data types and arrays of structures), array dimensionality (one-dimensional arrays, two-dimensional meshes, three-dimensional cubes), I/O modes (synchronous and asynchronous). In this paper, we present the observed performance of h5bench executed along several of these dimensions on existing supercomputers (Cori and Summit) and pre-exascale platforms (Perlmutter, Theta, and Polaris). h5bench measurements can be used to identify performance bottlenecks and their root causes and evaluate I/O optimizations. As the I/O patterns of h5bench are diverse and capture the I/O behaviors of various HPC applications, this study will be helpful to the broader supercomputing and I/O community. © 2024 Lawrence Berkeley National laboratory, The HDF Group, UChicago Argonne, LLC and The Authors. This work describes a RF beamforming phased array architecture enabled by a novel wideband polyphase combiner/divider that generates 36 differential I/Q pairs (144 outputs) over 10-20GHz (66% fractional bandwidth). The polyphase combiner is designed in LTCC technology and fuses together two stacked parallel-plate waveguide (PPWG) radial power combiners with a 5-stage PPWG branch-line hybrid coupler. Through rigorous full-wave simulations, it is shown that multiple wideband 0°, 90°, 180°, and 270° phases are produced with © 2023 IEEE.

Turbulent self-quenching mechanism of high-temperature-gradient arc plasma in a converging–diverging cylinder: a numerical study

Thermofluid dynamic behaviours of SF6 and air flows including arc plasma and non-ionized gas in a converging–diverging cylinder were studied numerically. The arc plasma in SF6 gas was constricted with high temperatures exceeding 20 000 K. It formed a slightly compressible and subsonic flow, whereas the ambient non-ionized gas had temperatures below 1000 K and a compressible flow with island-like supersonic flow zones. The arc plasma in air gas had temperatures lower than 12 000 K and a blurred fringe with a low gradient. The entire fluid region including the plasma formed an incompressible and subsonic flow. The different temperature distributions were attributed to differences of their thermal diffusivities and Reynolds numbers. For the SF6 flow system, SF6 molecules dissociated in the arc plasma to seven atoms. They were ionized to their ions and electrons, causing considerably greater volume expansion and generating both forward and backward flows locally. Impingements of those flows occurred locally. The generated vortices conveyed the thermal energy outward. Great degrees of turbulent mixing of the thermal energy occurred with the mass density fluctuation, which produced outward heat flux much stronger than that produced by either convection or conduction. The arc plasma was quenched effectively. © 2025 The Author(s)

A novel approach to ultrasonic communication systems introduces a software-defined system that utilizes Periodic-permanent-magnet electromagnetic acoustic transducers (PPM-EMATs) as transmitters and receivers. Traditional systems had limitations in adaptability and flexibility. The software-defined system provides enhanced versatility, adaptability, and portability, allowing customization for diverse applications. The use of PPM-EMATs is explored for optimizing energy transfer through metal plate channels, generating shear horizontal waves. Experimental tests validate the efficiency of PPM-EMATs, showing successful communication at a 10-kbps bitrate using ASK modulation with a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The research highlights the potential of PPM-EMAT technology in high-speed software-defined ultrasonic communication systems. © 2023 IEEE.

Mobile robots are proliferating at a significant pace and the continuous interaction between humans and robots opens the doors to facilitate our daily life activities. Following the target person with the robot is an important human-robot interaction (HRI) task that leads to its applications in industrial, domestic, and medical assistant robots. To implement the robotic tasks, traditional solutions rely on cloud servers that cause significant communication overhead due to data offloading. In our work, we overcome this potential issue of cloud-based solutions, by implementing the task of a hum-following robot (HFR) at the Nvidia Jetson Xavier NX edge platform. To perform the HFR task, typical approaches track the target person only from behind. While, our work allows the robot to track the person from behind, front, and side views (left & right). In this article, we combine the latest advances of deep learning and metric learning by presenting two trackers: Single Person Head Detection-based Tracking (SPHDT) model and Single Person full-Body Detection-based Tracking (SPBDT) model. For both models, we leverage a deep learning-based single object detector called MobileNetSSD with a metric learning-based re-identification model, DaSiamRPN. We perform the qualitative analysis considering six major environmental factors: pose change, illumination variations, partial occlusion, full occlusion, wall corner, and different viewing angles. Based on the better performance of SPBDT, compared to SPHDT in the experimental results, we select SPBDT model for the robot to track the target. We also use this vision model to provide the relative position, location, distance, and angle of the target person to control the robot's movement for performing the human-following task. © 2023 ICROS.
