Large-signal Stability Analysis of Grid-forming Inverters with Equivalent-circuit Models

This paper proposes an energy function-based direct method for large-signal stability assessment of grid-forming (GFM) inverters leveraging an equivalent-circuit representation of all involved control- and physical-layer dynamics. Three different primary controls, a standard inner-current outer-voltage cascaded-control architecture, output CL filter, and reference-current saturation limiting are featured in the modeling and analysis framework. A composite energy function for the GFM inverter is obtained by summing up individual energy contributions gleaned from the circuit representation. The approach can readily be generalized to different primary controls, output-filter arrangements, and current limiters since it is based on a circuit-theoretic foundation. Numerical simulations validate the efficacy of the approach in estimating the critical clearing time following a large-signal disturbance. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

W-type barium-nickel ferrite(BaNi_(2)Fe_(16)O_(27))is a highly promising material for electromagnetic wave(EMW)absorption be-cause of its magnetic loss capability for EMW,low cost,large-scale production potential,high-temperature resistance,and excellent chemical ***,the poor dielectric loss of magnetic ferrites hampers their utilization,hindering enhancement in their EMW-absorption *** efficient strategies that improve the EMW-absorption performance of ferrite is highly desired but re-mains ***,an efficient strategy substituting Ba^(2+)with rare earth La^(3+)in W-type ferrite was proposed for the preparation of novel La-substituted ferrites(Ba_(1-x)LaxNi_(2)Fe_(15.4)O_(27)).The influences of La^(3+)substitution on ferrites’EMW-absorption performance and the dissipative mechanism toward EMW were systematically explored and ***^(3+)efficiently induced lattice defects,enhanced defect-induced polarization,and slightly reduced the ferrites’bandgap,enhancing the dielectric properties of the ***^(3+)also enhanced the ferromagnetic resonance loss and strengthened magnetic *** effects considerably improved the EMW-absorption perform-ance of Ba_(1-x)LaxNi_(2)Fe_(15.4)O_(27)compared with pure W-type *** x=0.2,the best EMW-absorption performance was achieved with a minimum reflection loss of-55.6 dB and effective absorption bandwidth(EAB)of 3.44 GHz.

Tensor-train (TT) decompositions have the potential to significantly improve the performance of finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithms in terms of CPU time and memory storage. To this end, we extend TT-format FDTD implementations to cases incorporating perfectly matched layer (PML) boundaries. We assess the performance of TT-format FDTD implementations for different error tolerance levels. In particular, the trade-off between accuracy and efficiency is analyzed. Additionally, a regularization approach is proposed to control rank growth in TT-format FDTD simulations with highly disparate field amplitude levels across the domain brought forth by PML absorption and diverse source excitations. © 2025 IEEE.

This study aims to increase the number of access users by limiting the sample size to 30 users while ensuring that every Optical Network Unit (ONU) receives data from the Optical Line Terminal (OLT). The proposed solution allows for the determination of power requirements at each ONU based on bus-star topologies, facilitating an increase in user capacity. The power received by each ONU is a critical parameter that system designers must consider when planning the implementation of Fiber to the Home (FTTH), as it impacts the output data in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) and Signal Quality Factor (QF) for each user. Various parameters were evaluated to ensure that the enhanced network improves scalability while adhering to standard specifications. These parameters included the Q-factor, BER, eye diagram, user count, and received power. The study employed slicing and duplication techniques, utilizing Arrayed Waveguide Grating (AWG) for signal duplication and Wavelength Division Multiplexing for signal slicing. The simulations were conducted using a transmitter operating at a frequency of 1491 nm with a power output of 0 dBm, utilizing the latest version of OptiSystem 20 software. The results highlighted the system's capability to support a total of 73,728 users, meeting stringent performance criteria. Specifically, the system achieved a Q-factor greater than 6, indicating high signal quality, and a bit error rate (BER) lower than 1 × 10-9, ensuring reliable data transmission. For the sampled 30 users, the average Q factor was 8.1527, and the average BER was 5.3648 × 10^-11, with an output power level of -54.278 dBm. Despite an increase in users, the quality of the data supplied to clients remained unchanged. These outcomes underscore the robustness and efficiency of the design in delivering high-capacity, error-resilient optical communication. © 2025 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

This work formulates the feedback control strategies for vehicles to reach a goal point amongst a field of dynamic risk regions. Whereas previous work has considered deterministic versions of this problem, we consider the scenario in the context of uncertainty. This uncertainty could be due to unknown wind or other external disturbances. The risk regions’ dynamics are tightly coupled to the state of the vehicle and as a result the task of navigating through a field dynamically changes as the vehicle traverses through it. Rather than using a nonlinear program solver, the approach taken here is one of formulating the problem as a stochastic optimal control problem wherein a feedback control law is derived. This feedback control law allows a single or multiple vehicles to reach the desired goal location efficiently and with minimal risk incursion. When inside a risk region, there is a probability rate of the vehicle being neutralized. The stochastic dynamical system is modeled as a hybrid system, i.e., regime switching diffusion. The hybrid system is comprised of continuous spatial dynamics and discrete operational states corresponding to "normal" and "neutralized". The optimal control problem is discretized into a field of vehicle states and control. Using Value Iteration, the control signal at each discrete location is optimized, providing a feedback control strategy over the field. Renewable hydrogen blending into urban natural gas grids with power-to-gas: A techno-economic assessment for Greece

Renewable hydrogen can be produced with Power-to-Gas (PtG) systems, using renewable energy sources (RES), with minimal Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. With this paper, the authors aim to provide clear insights into optimal PtG systems’ techno-economic performance, in the case of renewable hydrogen blending into gas grids such as that of the city of Athens. Two different production methods are investigated, namely one in which the investor owns the required energy generation units, and one in which the required energy is procured from independent producers. Seven different underlying parametric scenarios are investigated, reflecting possible future costs developments according to scientific literature. The results show Levelized Costs of produced hydrogen ranging from 2.14 to 5 €/kg. Production through own energy units is currently overall more economical. Energy and electrolysis costs comprise most of the costs, indicating the necessity for considerable price reductions for green hydrogen to become competitive.

Frozen Large-Scale Pretrained Vision-Language Models are the Effective Foundational Backbone for Multimodal Breast Cancer Prediction

Breast cancer is a pervasive global health concern among women. Leveraging multimodal data from enterprise patient databases - including Picture Archiving and Communication systems (PACS) and Electronic Health Records (EHRs) - holds promise for improving prediction. This study introduces a multimodal deep-learning model leveraging mammogram datasets to evaluate breast cancer prediction. Our approach integrates frozen large-scale pretrained vision-language models, showcasing superior performance and stability compared to traditional image-tabular models across two public breast cancer datasets. The model consistently outperforms conventional full fine-tuning methods by using frozen pretrained vision-language models alongside a lightweight trainable classifier. The observed improvements are significant. In the CBIS-DDSM dataset, the Area Under the Curve (AUC) increases from 0.867 to 0.902 during validation and from 0.803 to 0.830 for the official test set. Within the EMBED dataset, AUC improves from 0.780 to 0.805 during validation. In scenarios with limited data, using Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System category three (BI-RADS 3) cases, AUC improves from 0.91 to 0.96 on the official CBIS-DDSM test set and from 0.79 to 0.83 on a challenging validation set. This study underscores the benefits of vision-language models in jointly training diverse image-clinical datasets from multiple healthcare institutions, effectively addressing challenges related to non-aligned tabular features. Combining training data enhances breast cancer prediction on the EMBED dataset, outperforming all other experiments. In summary, our research emphasizes the efficacy of frozen large-scale pretrained vision-language models in multimodal breast cancer prediction, offering superior performance and stability over conventional methods, reinforcing their potential for breast cancer prediction. © 2024 IEEE.

Logic diagnosis is essential for improving reliability and yield. In conventional diagnosis methods, although various methods are proposed to enhance the accuracy and resolution of logic diagnosis, there are still diagnosis results where the reported locations of defects are incorrect. Particularly in logic circuits, which contain a large number of gates, multiple faults can occur, not just single faults. Since the number of possible cases for multiple faults is significantly greater compared to single faults, the diagnosis of multiple faults is complicated. To address this problem, a new diagnosis method that uses a multi-stage process with fault candidate reduction is proposed. In the proposed method, machine learning is used with fault candidate reduction, and post-processing is performed after the use of machine learning. This proposed method allows for the analysis of multiple faults using only the test responses for single faults, demonstrating that this method can maintain sufficient accuracy and resolution for unexpected faults. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

An integrated machine learning approach for identifying emergency rescue messages on social media during natural disasters

During large-scale disasters, emergency call centers are often overwhelmed by the large volume of rescue requests and calls for help. Consequently, people are turning to social media platforms to seek assistance. Rescue information posted on these platforms is extremely valuable for first responders to make informed rescue decisions. Therefore, the automatic identification of these requests from the vast amount of data posted on social media during crises is critical yet challenging. This work presents our ongoing research on applying deep learning techniques to extract actionable rescue information from social media during crises. We proposed a novel deep learning model that integrates a fine-tuned BERT to extract low-level statistical features and rule-based Regex filters to extract problem-specific features for emergency tweet identification. The proposed model was evaluated on labeled tweets collected from three hurricane events (Harvey, Ian, and Ida). Experimental results showed that our model performed better than several machine learning and deep learning methods in terms of the Area Under the Precision-Recall Curve (AUC-PR) metric for all events. This study contributed to the crisis informatics literature by introducing a novel deep learning approach for automatically identifying actionable information in social media, which can be adapted for similar natural language processing (NLP) tasks. © The Author(s) 2025.

Integration of plasmonic nanostructures into perovskites is an effective way to enhance and tailor light-matter interactions, resulting in further improvement of the already impressive intrinsic photonic properties of the perovskites. Despite remarkable recent progress, the complex mechanisms via which light, excitons and plasmons interact in such hybrid structures are not fully understood. Herein, plasmonic-perovskite structures in bilayer configuration are produced by the deposition of formamidinium lead triiodide (FAPbI3) nanocrystals (NCs) on top of a core-shell gold-silica (Au/SiO2) nanoparticle (NP) underlayer. By tuning the NP core and shell size, a 5-fold enhancement of the macroscopic absorption and luminescence in the vicinity of the localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance can be achieved in the bilayers compared to reference, pristine FAPbI3 NCs films. Optical spectroscopy performed both at the ensemble and at the few particle level, supported by numerical simulations allow to disentangle the contributions of near-field LSP-exciton and far-field LSP-light interactions that result in the enhancement of the light absorption and light emission. Based on our results, far field light scattering by the LSP results in photon recycling within the perovskite NCs layer, effectively increasing light absorption and light emission. Near-field energy transfer from the metal NPs to the semiconductor NCs contributes less but becomes significant for the case of large core and small shell NPs due to the increased spectral overlap and closer proximity of the surface plasmons and excitons, respectively. © 2025 The Authors.
