Averaging-Based Energy Management Strategy for Hybrid Battery-Ultracapacitor Energy Storage System

Considering a battery as the energy source for steady average current and an ultracapacitor as the dynamic energy buffer, this paper proposes a novel control strategy based on average current demand. The methodology averages the demand current over a time window to determine battery current, combined with rules to maintain the ultracapacitor's state of charge above 50%. However, the battery current is significantly affected by the averaging time window. A small window causes fluctuations, while a large one imposes unwanted currents to control the ultracapacitor's state of charge. As so, by optimizing the averaging window, this strategy minimizes battery current stress and power loss. Simulations under an urban driving cycle compare the proposed strategy with a sole-battery configuration, dynamic programming (benchmark), and rule-based approaches (original strategy). The simulation results indicate that the proposed strategy smooths battery currents, achieves over 75% of dynamic programming's effectiveness in extending battery life, and reduces computational burden and memory usage by over 85%. The strategy's low computational burden, and causal nature enable real-time control, which is demonstrated practically on an experimental setup. © 2025 IEEE.

This work studies information freshness of a V2I status updating link in IoV. The status updating link is modeled as a multi-source Ber/Geo/1/1 non-preemptive or preemptive queue. We focus on statistical characteristics of the age of information (AoI) and peak AoI (PAoI). To fully track the AoI evolutions under non-preemptive and preemptive policies, Markov three-dimensional age process (3DAP) and two-dimensional age process (2DAP) are respectively introduced. Their first element is the AoI process;The second one stands for if an update of the concerned source is in transmission and its current age;The third element of 3DAP denotes if an update of another source is in transmission. An analytical approach for studying the AoIs and PAoIs in discrete-time multi-source systems is presented. By studying the state transitions, balance equations, and stationary distributions of 3DAP and 2DAP, analytical expressions of the distributions and averages of AoIs and PAoIs under both queueing policies are derived. Moreover, the optimal probabilistic update selection mechanism (PUSM) that maximizes overall freshness is derived in closed-form for the two-source case. Numerical results validate effectiveness of the theoretical analyses and reveal usefulness of the retransmission. It is found that in terms of improving the overall freshness, the PUSM should be designed to make effective update generation probabilities of sources as close as possible. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Accurately time-aligned spectral targets are essential for training electrocorticographic (ECoG) brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) intended for real-time speech output. This alignment is particularly challenging with "silent speech, " in which speech occurs without phonation, or in the extreme, without articulation. Crafting suitably precise targets for silent speech is complex and error-prone due to multiple sources of temporal imprecision. We investigated how these temporal inaccuracies impact deep neural network performance in synthesizing speech from a BCI clinical trial participant who retained some speech capability. By simulating silent speech conditions through distortions in known acoustic target timings, we observed significant performance degradations at both phonetic and syllabic timescales. Accuracy-based measures offered a more reliable assessment of intelligibility than traditional metrics like the short-time objective intelligibility index, which may overestimate performance in low-precision contexts. These results underscore the need for advanced alignment techniques with precise phonetic and syllabic guarantees for silent speech BCIs focused on providing immediate output. © 2025 IEEE.

Achieving fairness, verifiability, and abandon resistance poses challenges within e-voting protocols. This paper introduces a privacy-preserving self-tallying e-voting system leveraging blockchain technology. The system supports diverse e-voting models, including 'Yes/No', approval voting with multiple candidates, and score voting. By employing linearly homomorphic time-lock puzzles (LHTLPs) along with verifiable delay functions (VDFs) and zero-knowledge Succinct Non-interactive Argument of Knowledge schemes (zk-SNARKs), the proposed system ensures crucial security properties, including voter anonymity and eligibility, as well as ballot privacy and validity. It also provides efficient individual and universal verifiability (end-to-end verifiability), and dispute-freeness. More importantly, the system demonstrates fairness and abandon resistance. Furthermore, the evaluation of the proof-of-concept implementation on the Ethereum blockchain indicates that on-chain gas costs are either fixed or increasing slowly and logarithmically with the number of voters. © 2013 IEEE.

In an era where Intelligent Decision Support systems (IDSS) are integral to managing the vast data from Internet of Everything (IoE) systems, this study introduces IDSDeep-CCD, a novel IDSS approach for detecting concrete cracks, a critical issue in civil infrastructure maintenance. Traditional visual inspection methods for crack detection are time-consuming and error-prone. To address this, IDSDeep-CCD employs deep learning, utilizing an open-source dataset of concrete crack images for enhanced accuracy. The system's two-stage approach, featuring feature extraction via pre-trained models and a fully connected network for classification, significantly outperforms existing methods. Our results demonstrate a remarkable 99.9% accuracy rate in crack detection without data augmentation, marking a notable advancement in automatic detection technology. This breakthrough offers practical benefits for the industry by enabling more precise and efficient identification of concrete cracks, paving the way for timely and accurate remedial actions. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Swept laser interferometry is an extremely powerful solution embedded in several recent technologies such as absolute distance measurement,light detection and ranging(LiDAR),optical frequency domain reflectometry,optical coherence tomography,microresonator characterization,and gas *** in the optical frequency sweeping of tunable lasers is a fatal drawback in gaining the expected outcome from these ***,we introduce an on-chip,millimeter-scale,7 m spiral resonator that is made of ultralow-loss Si_(3)N_(4)to act as a frequency ruler for correction of the tunable lasers sweeping *** sharp 2 MHz frequency lines of the 8.5×10^(7)high-quality factor resonator and the narrow-spaced 25.566 MHz frequency ticks of the 7 m spiral allow unprecedented precision for an on-chip solution to correct the laser sweeping *** measurements of the ruler’s frequency spacing,linewidth,and temperature and wavelength sensitivities of the frequency ticks are performed here to demonstrate the quality of the frequency *** addition,the spiral resonator is implemented in an frequency-modulated continuous-wave LiDAR experiment to demonstrate a potential application of the proposed on-chip frequency ruler.

Protocol optimization is critical in Computed Tomography (CT) for achieving desired diagnostic image quality while minimizing radiation dose. Due to the inter-effect of influencing CT parameters, traditional optimization methods rely on the testing of exhaustive combinations of these parameters. This poses a notable limitation due to the impracticality of exhaustive parameter testing. This study introduces a novel methodology leveraging Virtual Imaging Trials (VITs) and reinforcement learning to more efficiently optimize CT protocols. Computational phantoms with liver lesions were imaged using a validated CT simulator and reconstructed with a novel CT reconstruction Toolkit. The optimization parameter space included tube voltage, tube current, reconstruction kernel, slice thickness, and pixel size. The optimization process was done using a Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) agent which was trained to maximize the Detectability Index (d') of the liver lesion for each reconstructed image. Results showed that our reinforcement learning approach found the absolute maximum d' across the test cases while requiring 79.7% fewer steps compared to an exhaustive search, demonstrating both accuracy and computational efficiency, offering a efficient and robust framework for CT protocol optimization. The flexibility of the proposed technique allows for use of varying image quality metrics as the objective metric to maximize for. Our findings highlight the advantages of combining VIT and reinforcement learning for CT protocol management. © 2025 SPIE.

This letter investigates the target search problem for a network of autonomous vehicles, aiming to maximize the detection of randomly appearing targets within a given area. Considering no prior knowledge of the targets is available, we propose a multi-vehicle cooperative persistent coverage scheme under the framework of multi-agent reinforcement learning, in contrast to heuristic and model-based optimization methods in existing works. We model the persistent coverage problem as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) due to the vehicles' limited observation ranges, and introduce a knowability map to characterize their knowledge of the target area. Each vehicle employs a distributed estimator, leveraging its own observations and shared information from neighboring vehicles, to construct a globally estimated knowability map—thereby mitigating partial observability. The persistent coverage policies are learned with the architecture of centralized training and distributed execution, enabling cooperative and efficient target search by fully exploiting shared information. Moreover, we propose an adaptive partition method for the target area to ensure a fixed dimension of the state space in the POMDP, which can improve scalability of the learned policy to target areas with various sizes. Simulations validate effectiveness and scalability of the proposed cooperative scheme. © 2016 IEEE.

Across the world, the lack of proper healthcare resources in rural areas significantly impacts the physical and economic well-being of individuals living there. There is a need for multi-faceted solutions to help alleviate healthcare issues in these areas. Medibot is a robot which monitors the health of individuals in these areas and takes appropriate measures. Patients visit Medibot for daily non-invasive monitoring of their vitals and then receive updated guidance or are connected with a healthcare professional for immediate support. The robot provides an easy way to get continuous care for those with limited access to healthcare resources or facilities.
