This paper addresses the problem of collaborative multi-agent autonomous driving of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) in lane-free highway scenarios. We eliminate the lane-changing task, i.e., CAVs may be located in any arbitrary lateral position within the road boundaries, hence allowing for better utilization of the available road capacity. As a consequence, vehicles operate in a much more complex environment, and the need for the individual CAVs to select actions that are efficient for the group as a whole is highly desired. We formulate this environment as a multiagent collaboration problem represented via a coordination graph, thus decomposing the problem with local utility functions, based on the interactions between vehicles. We produce a tractable and scalable solution by estimating the joint action of all vehicles via the anytime max-plus algorithm, with local utility functions provided by potential fields, designed to promote collision avoidance. Specifically, the fields have an ellipsoid form that is most suitable for lane-free highway environments. This novel use of max-plus with potential fields gives rise to a coordinated control policy that exploits only local information specific to each CAV. Our experimental evaluation confirms the effectiveness of our approach: lane-free movement allows for increased traffic flow rates, and vehicles are able to achieve speeds that are both high and close to their desired ones, even in demanding environments with high traffic flow. © 2021 International Foundation for Autonomous Agents and Multiagent systems (***). This paper analyses three prominent biased-flux permanent magnet (BFPM) motors and compares them with each other. The structures of these BFPMs are different from each other, but they share the same operation principle. These structures are, namely, hybrid-excited multi-tooth slot-PM (HETSPM), multi-tooth variable flux reluctance (TVFR), and inter-modular PM (IMPM). The reason for this selection of structure is because of complementary features that each one possesses. For example, the HETSPM motor places in between the TVFR and IMPM motors in terms of PM consumption and demagnetization. However, the IMPM structure produces high amount torque at high efficiency. The demagnetization of the HETSPM and IMPM structures is also investigated and is shown that, in the similar situation, the HETSPM provides a safer operation environment for the PMs. Two-dimensional finite element method is used to extract the important profiles of the mentioned structures.

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are poised to revolutionize modern transportation, offering enhanced safety, efficiency, and convenience. However, the increasing complexity and connectivity of AV systems introduce significant cybersecurity challenges. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of AV security with a focus on threat modeling frameworks, including STRIDE, DREAD, and MITRE ATT&CK, to systematically identify and mitigate potential risks. The survey examines key components of AV architectures, such as sensors, communication modules, and electronic control units (ECUs), and explores common attack vectors like wireless communication exploits, sensor spoofing, and firmware vulnerabilities. Through case studies of real-world incidents, such as the Jeep Cherokee and Tesla Model S exploits, the paper highlights the critical need for robust security measures. Emerging technologies, including blockchain for secure Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication, AI-driven threat detection, and secure Over-The-Air (OTA) updates, are discussed as potential solutions to mitigate evolving threats. The paper also addresses legal and ethical considerations, emphasizing data privacy, user safety, and regulatory compliance. By combining threat modeling frameworks, multi-layered security strategies, and proactive defenses, this survey offers insights and recommendations for enhancing the cybersecurity of autonomous vehicles. © 2024, CC BY.

The increasing uncertainties caused by the high-penetration of stochastic renewable generation resources poses a significant threat to the power system voltage stability. To address this issue, this paper proposes a probabilistic deep kernel learning enabled surrogate model to extract the hidden relationship between uncertain sources, i.e., wind power and loads, and load margin for probabilistic load margin assessment (PLMA). Unlike other deep learning approaches, a kernel SHAP provides the sensitivity analysis as well as interpretability of the inputs to outputs influences. This allows identifying the critical factors that affect load margin so that corrective control can be initiated for stability enhancement. Numerical results carried out on the IEEE 118-bus power system demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed data-driven PLMA scheme. © 2022 IEEE.

Space mapping (SM) is one of the most powerful and computationally efficient design optimization methodologies in RF and microwave engineering. Its impressive evolution in terms of algorithmic variations and diverse engineering applications is well-documented. Most of the SM-based design optimization cases, including those solved by advanced and sophisticated space mapping formulations, have been demonstrated for linear frequency-domain microwave circuits. In this paper, we provide a brief retrospective on the emergence of space mapping, including its initial impression on a worldwide authority on nonlinear microwave circuit simulation and design: Prof. Vittorio Rizzoli. We briefly review some of the most fundamental space mapping optimization concepts and emphasize their applicability to nonlinear transient-domain microwave circuit design optimization. We illustrate this by a typical problem of high-speed digital signal conditioning: the physical design of a set of CMOS inverters driving an FR4 printed circuit board interconnect. © 2022 EuMA.

In this paper we consider a class of nonlinear systems with two kinds of inputs: one is slowly-varying, the other is fast-varying and periodic, and both are only piecewise continuous. Under the assumption that the origin is a common equilibrium for all values of the input signals, we provide sufficient conditions under which this equilibrium is semi-globally exponentially stable. Our approach is based on considering the (partial) average system which averages out the fast variation but retains the slow variation, and which can be used to approximate the original system in a certain sense. The stability conditions involve the existence of a suitable Lyapunov function for this average system, along with a bound on the total variation of the slowly-varying input.

The current evolution of power systems from a unidirectional to a multi-directional power flow system, in which Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) are increasing, directly impacts the way they are being operated to ensure the security and quality of electrical supply and the resilient performance of the electrical grid as a whole. Additionally, the functional capability of the active distribution network is continually challenged by extreme weather conditions and unforeseen events. As such, the imperative for developing and implementing advanced resilience strategies within distribution networks has never been more critical, ensuring they are not only robust but also agile in the face of increasingly unpredictable challenges. In the wake of extreme events, fast recovery and system stability of the network are investigated. Optimal utilization of available resources is the key to system resilience. Studying the performance of the power network of Kefallonia island in two case studies (single-fault and multiple-fault), the results prove that among the available resources that are required for the resilience and the minimization of the catastrophic consequences due to extreme events, microgrids should be incorporated as a building block for the future grid.

The goal of this article is the development a portable system for the neutralization of a ship's tank waste products by heating them exploiting microwaves selective absorption, based on hollow waveguides. The extraction of hydrocarbons from the waste will make them safe for deposit and providing the possibility of easy landfill or recycling. The development of the model requires the simulation of the device using a Multiphysics simulator. The proposed structure is based on the flow of the wastewater through a quartz tubed placed inside a WR-340 rectangular waveguide which will be operated at its fundamental mode at 2.45 GHz. The proposed microwave technique leads to a uniform heating of the material at $260^\circ C$ with efficient 99 % while maintaining the leaked electromagnetic radiation from the device in safely level. Furthermore, the size of the aforementioned device permits its mounting it to an appropriate vehicle able to arrive and operate on site (e.g. ports).

Many application from the bee colony health state monitoring could be efficiently solved using a computer vision techniques. One of such challenges is an efficient way for counting the number of incoming and outcoming bees, which could be used to further analyse many trends, such as the bee colony health state, blooming periods, or for investigating the effects of agricultural spraying. In this paper, we compare three methods for the automated bee counting over two own datasets. The best performing method is based on the ResNet-50 convolutional neural network classifier, which achieved accuracy of 87% over the BUT1 dataset and the accuracy of 93% over the BUT2 dataset.
