The structure and variability of tides in the 80 - 120 km height region are reviewed. Particularly emphasised are seasonal-latitudinal variations in the vertical structure of diurnal and semidiurnal winds between 70 - 100 km as measured by meteor and partial reflection drift radars, and tidal temperatures determined by incoherent scatter radars between 100 and 140 km. Variations in tidal structures with longitude, from day to day, and during equinoctial transition periods are also addressed. © 1990.

In this paper we present a method for non-rigid registration of meshes. The method aligns two surfaces of deformable objects by automatically separating the deformation into a single global transformation and other local deformations. The local deformations are found by applying the deformation model proposed by Sumner (Sumner et al., 2007) that previous methods have used to register two surfaces. However, we specify a rigid transformation for each node of the deformation graph using a rotation matrix and a translation vector. With this model, unit quaternions of rotation matrices are paramterized using an homeomorphic relation between the 4D unit sphere and the 3D projective space. Therefore, the number of unknowns is reduced by half compared to the original models based on affine transformations and the optimization process is less complex. We demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method by aligning the surfaces of data sets without any prior knowledge and assumptions about the deformation between the two surfaces. © Copyright 2016 by SCITEPRESS - Science and Technology Publications, Lda. To meet the increased demand for assistance from both the novice and the more experienced enquirer amidst an environment of decreasing funding for staff resources, some automation must be used. University libraries are increasingly implementing computers and automation. This trend encourages and facilitates the use of expert systems in those libraries. Expert systems can be used as guides to provide a broad overview of library services and resources. Expert systems may also be used within the narrow focus of a particular course or department, and, soon, may be used to provide detailed relevant information to suit the “level” of the user. © 1992, MCB UP Limited

A runtime system for implementation of image processing operations is presented. It is designed for working in a flexible and distributed environment related to the software architecture of a newly developed UAV system. The software architecture can be characterized at a coarse scale as a layered system, with a deliberative layer at the top, a reactive layer in the middle, and a processing layer at the bottom. At a finer scale each of the three levels is decomposed into sets of modules which communicate using CORBA, allowing system development and deployment on the UAV to be made in a highly flexible way. Image processing takes place in a dedicated module located in the process layer, and is the main focus of the paper. This module has been designed as a runtime system for data flow graphs, allowing various processing operations to be created online and on demand by the higher levels of the system. The runtime system is implemented in Java, which allows development and deployment to be made on a wide range of hardware/software configurations. Optimizations for particular hardware platforms have been made using Java's native interface. © World Scientific Publishing Company.

The capstone design experience is widely accepted as an essential element of contemporary engineering education. With the encouragement of the ABET and in recognition of their innate value, many undergraduate institutions have more recently established interdisciplinary capstone design experiences. Design experiences involving students of differing engineering disciplines offer the possibility of more complex, meaningful projects and introduce traditional engineering students to the terminology and technology of related disciplines. At the same time, the value of undergraduates trained in the systems engineering and systems engineering Management disciplines has been realized both by industry and the department of Defense. While capstone design experiences which involve interaction among students schooled in different engineering and engineering technology disciplines are becoming more common, those which also include students trained in systems engineering and systems engineering Management are less common. A design experience in which student engineers and student managers must cooperate to plan, design, fabricate, test and report on their designs can be extremely enlightening for all involved and very closely mimics "real world" design experiences. We describe here our first year's experience with combined student engineer-manager capstone design teams. We compare the experiences and impressions of both engineering and management students who worked on these interdisciplinary teams with students who had no management trained students involved in their design experiences. The impressions and experiences of faculty project mentors are included as well. Finally, we note some of the challenges encountered by faculty in the organization and management of this design experience. The evidence will show that while this arrangement has its difficulties, the quality of the design experience has been enhanced in significant ways. © American Society for engineering Education

Knowledge discovery in multidimensional knowledge representation framework: An integrative approach for the visualization of text analytics results

Visualization of results is one of the central challenges in big data analytics and integrative text mining. With a growing amount of unstructured data and different perspectives on big data, knowledge graphs have difficulties to simultaneously represent and visualize all analyzed dimensions of knowledge. This paper proposes integrative text mining as a solution to combine results from different dimensional analysis in a multidimensional knowledge representation (MKR) for knowledge discovery and visualization purpose. Analysis results from named entity recognition, topic detection, sentiment analysis and the extraction of semantic relationships are, therefore, integrated into a common representation structure. In the implementation part of this research, an application is introduced which utilizes MKR based on the results of stated text mining methods applied on a German and English news data set. State-of-the-art visualizations are used in the application and MKR adaptively transforms the visualization type of the knowledge graph according to the selected context for knowledge discovery. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

In outdoor video processing systems, the image frames of a video sequence are usually subjected to poor visibility and contrast in hazy or foggy weather conditions. A fast and efficient technique to improve the visibility and contrast of digital images captured in such environments is proposed in this paper. The image enhancement algorithm constitutes three processes viz. dynamic range compression, local contrast enhancement and nonlinear color restoration. We propose a nonlinear function to modify the wavelet coefficients for dynamic range compression and uses an adaptive contrast enhancement technique in wavelet domain. A nonlinear color restoration process based on the chromatic information of the input image frame is applied to convert the enhanced intensity image back to a color image. We also propose a model based image restoration approach which uses a new nonlinear transfer function on luminance component to obtain the transmission map. Experimental results show better visibility compared to those images enhanced with other state of art techniques. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Head pose estimation, though a trivial task for the human visual system, remains a challenging problem for computer vision systems. The task requires identifying the modes of image variance that directly pertain to pose changes, while generalizing across face identity and mitigating other image variances. Conventional methods such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) fail to identify the true relationship between the observed space and the pose variable, while supervised methods such as Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) neglect the continuous nature of pose variation and take a discrete multi-class approach. We present a method for estimating head pose using Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA), where pose variation is regarded as a continuous variable and is represented by a manifold in feature space. The proposed technique directly identifies the underlying dimension that maximizes correlation between the observed image and pose variable. It is shown to increase estimation accuracy and provide a more compact image representation that better captures pose features. Additionally, an enhanced version of the system is proposed that utilizes Gabor filters for providing pose sensitive input to the correlation based system. The preprocessed input serves to increase the overall accuracy of the pose estimation system. The accuracy of the techniques is evaluated using the Pointing '04 and CUbiC FacePix(30) pose varying face databases and is shown to produce a lower estimation error when compared to both PCA and LDA based methods. © 2010 IEEE.

We have previously developed a framework for natural language response generation for mixed-initiative dialogs in the CUHK Restaurants domain. This paper investigates the use of semi-automatic technique for response templates generation. We adopt a semi-automatic approach for grammar induction to capture the language structures of responses from unannotated corpora. We wish to use this approach to induce a set of grammars from our response data. The induced grammars are coupled with a parser to produce response templates in a semi-automatic way. Our response data consists of 2349 waiter responses. It is used as the training corpus for grammar induction. Unsupervised grammar induction is first performed, followed by using the learned grammars as prior knowledge for seeding the clustering process. Results show that the semi-automatically-induced response templates cover more than 50% of the hand-designed templates in templates coverage and provide more realization options. Performance evaluation indicates that the task completion rate has at least 90%, and most of the Grice's maxims as well as the overall user satisfaction scored at 3.5 points or above. ©2004 IEEE.
