Discriminative Dimension Selection (DDS) has emerged as a powerful tool for identifying the most relevant features in high-dimensional datasets, enabling interpretable data analysis and visualization. This paper explores the application of DDS which utilizes overlapping clusters and dimensions to enhance the interpretability and performance of the K-means clustering algorithm. Our approach leverages the post-processing capabilities of K-means to selectively retain informative features and discard redundant or irrelevant ones. This refined feature set not only preserves the clustering performance of K-means but also enhances its interpretability and visualization. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method using a variety of datasets and compare its performance against traditional K-means and the proposed method Overlap-resolved Clustering (ORC). We also test with multiple cluster validity indices such as the Silhouette Coefficient Score (SS), Davies-Bouldin Index (DB), and Calinski-Harabasz Index (CH). Our results consistently show that ORC produces better clustering results and enhances the interpretability of the datasets. This study highlights the potential of DDS as a valuable tool for improving the interpretability and visualization of high-dimensional data analysis using K-means clustering. © 2024 IEEE.

In early December 2019,the city of Wuhan,China,reported an outbreak of coronavirus disease(COVID-19),caused by a novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2(SARS-CoV-2).On January 30,2020,the World Health Organization(WHO)declared the outbreak a global pandemic *** the face of the COVID-19 pandemic,the most important step has been the effective diagnosis and monitoring of infected *** COVID-19 using Machine Learning(ML)technologies can help the health care unit through assistive diagnostic suggestions,which can reduce the health unit's burden to a certain *** paper investigates the possibilities of ML techniques in identifying/detecting COVID-19 patients including both conventional and exploring from chest X-ray images the effect of viral *** approach includes preprocessing,feature extraction,and ***,the features are extracted using the Histogram of Oriented(HOG)and Local Binary Pattern(LBP)feature ***,for the extracted features classification,six ML models of Support Vector Machine(SVM)and K-Nearest Neighbor(KNN)is *** results show that the diagnostic accuracy of random forest classifier(RFC)on extracted HOG plusLBP features is as high as 94%followed by SVM at 93%.The sensitivity of the K-nearest neighbour model has reached an accuracy of 88%.Overall,the predicted approach has shown higher classification accuracy and effective diagnostic *** is a highly useful tool for clinical practitioners and radiologists to help them in diagnosing and tracking the cases of COVID-19.

The direct modulation and fiber transmission performances of a bi-layer-oxide-confined 850-nm vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) containing an emission aperture size of 3.5 μm with versatile novel complex data formats are compared. With delivering quadrature amplitude modulation-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (QAM-OFDM), generalized frequency-division multiplexing (GFDM), and discrete multi-tone (DMT) data streams, the highest data rate allowable for encoding the 3.5-μm-aperture VCSEL is demonstrated under back-to-back (BtB) and 100-m OM5-multi-mode fiber (OM5-MMF) transmissions. The newly designed 3.5-μm-aperture VCSEL contains InGaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum wells and bi-layer-oxide-confined aperture to enhance its differential gain, reduce its thermal resistance, and improve its parasitic resistance for providing broader encoding bandwidth. Optimizing the VCSEL bias at 9 mA (11Ith) makes the lasing with three to four transverse modes suffer from a low modal dispersion effect, which also provides its 3-dB bandwidth as wide as 24.9 GHz and suppresses its RIN level to −138.0 dBc∕Hz for broadband OFDM/GFDM/DMT data encoding. By using the pre-distortion technique on the OFDM to compensate the SNR degradation, the OFDM modified with a pre-leveling slope of 0.5 dB/GHz can provide 160 Gbit/s for BtB and 140 Gbit/s for 100-m OM5-MMF transmissions. By dividing the N OFDM subcarriers into K equally-sized GFDM subcarriers and M equally-sized GFDM subsymbols, the QAM-GFDM with K = 2 can effectively enhance the out-of-band suppression to 35.9 dB and reduce the peak-to-average-power ratio to 9.7 dB, which can support 168 Gbit/s under BtB and 144 Gbit/s in 100-m OM5-MMF transmissions. To achieve the maximal spectral-usage efficiency, the DMT with the adaptive bit-loading algorithm is employed to improve the data rate up to 172 Gbit/s for BtB and 146 Gbit/s for 100-m OM5-MMF conditions. An advanced hybrid renewable energy collecting and storage system prototype that utilizes water flow as its primary power source. Additionally, the system incorporates an energy monitoring system based on the Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The device effectively harnesses energy from the movement of water, storing it for future use in low-voltage applications. It demonstrates a maximum daily energy capture capacity of about 100Wh. The energy monitoring system, based on the Internet of Things (IoT), enables the real-time and remote monitoring of energy harvesting and usage. We thoroughly assessed the energy harvesting component across different situations to identify the crucial parameters that impact energy output. The results of our study demonstrate that several elements, including the spatial separation 'between the energy harvester and the water source, Water flow' speed, sensor orientation, and sensor density, all play significant roles in determining the quantity of energy collected. This research shows that it is possible to integrate IoT technology with hydropower renewable energy systems. It provides significant perspectives on enhancing energy extraction efficiency in practical scenarios. © 2024 IEEE.

In VANETs, the important and effective applications of vehicle localization include safety and communication applications. Thus, it is difficult to get very accurate localization in the dynamic and often very fluctuating environment of VANET. This research responds to this challenge with a keen thrust on improving vehicle localization using the Mobility Data Verification process. The primary goal of this work is to achieve high accuracy of vehicle positioning within VANET by checking the coherence of mobility data of moving vehicles. Hence, we present a concept that builds upon Mobility Data Verification to provide real-time location details from vehicles. Both GPS and onboard sensors feed this method, which uses a multi-level verification to flag out or eliminate the errors of deliberately spoofed data points. We use simulations to evaluate and validate the effectiveness of the proposed verification approach. As the proposed system, our previously developed and fine-tuned weighted localization (OWL) strategy does so. The performance evaluation results suggest that our proposed solution is feasible to distinguish automobiles that are not trustworthy and improve the performance of the localization algorithm. © 2024 IEEE.

This practice paper introduces the project-based approach of the center for Project-Based Learning within the department of Information technology and electrical engineering of ETH Zürich. This center's approach to education is built around a three-stage education model that includes projects early on in the students' educational journeys, gradually increasing their complexity in alignment with their growing level of experience. This approach ensures students develop both technical expertise and essential professional skills necessary for their engineering careers, scaffolding course work, small scale group projects and interdisciplinary flagship projects. The center is further enhanced by an evidence-based approach to continued improvement, using regular surveys, reflective journals, and research findings to refine course design and supervision. Students have reported high satisfaction levels with the courses, expressing that the projects aided their understanding of future aspirations and helped develop crucial soft skills, notably in collaboration, communication, and presentation. This paper proposes the design of a compact inverted C patch on-body antenna for biomedical applications. The antenna structure consists of an inverted C patch on the top of the FR4 substrate, integrated with the radiation rectangular patch at the bottom by using a shorted pin. The ground plane is also at the bottom of the FR4 substrate, separated by a gap. The proposed antenna is considered on the human skin in the environment of on-body communications. From simulated results, the antenna has | S11| less than -10 dB covered the frequency range of 2.36-2.58 GHz, uni-directional radiation pattern, and -4.5 dBi of gain at 2.45 GHz. It is found that the lossy human skin affects antenna characteristics by reducing its gain and efficiency. Moreover, the proposed antenna is appropriate for on-body communication systems. © 2024 IEEE.
