Many real-world image recognition problems, such as diagnostic medical imaging exams, are "long-tailed" – there are a few common findings followed by many more relatively rare conditions. In chest radiography, diagnosis is both a long-tailed and multi-label problem, as patients often present with multiple findings simultaneously. While researchers have begun to study the problem of long-tailed learning in medical image recognition, few have studied the interaction of label imbalance and label co-occurrence posed by long-tailed, multi-label disease classification. To engage with the research community on this emerging topic, we conducted an open challenge, CXR-LT, on long-tailed, multi-label thorax disease classification from chest X-rays (CXRs). We publicly release a large-scale benchmark dataset of over 350,000 CXRs, each labeled with at least one of 26 clinical findings following a long-tailed distribution. We synthesize common themes of top-performing solutions, providing practical recommendations for long-tailed, multi-label medical image classification. Finally, we use these insights to propose a path forward involving vision-language foundation models for few- and zero-shot disease classification. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.

Hybrid Programming-based Scheduling Approach for Many Heterogeneous Computing Tasks with Asynchronous Generation in IIoT

Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) plays a crucial role in advancing smart manufacturing by connecting numerous devices, enabling data exchanges, and supporting industrial applications. Yet, the timely and proper scheduling of asynchronously generated Heterogeneous Computing Tasks (HCTs) in IIoT environments remains a significant challenge. In this article, we first introduce the representation and notation of such HCTs and define a computing network structure. We then propose an initial mathematical programming-based scheduling model aimed at minimizing HCT completion time. To make this model easy to solve, we reformulate it by using logical constraints and derive a constraint programming-based model, for which a feasibility-guaranteed solution algorithm is developed. This algorithm leverages two easily-verified propositions to either identify feasible solutions or demonstrate the infeasibility of the ***, we have proven a critical proposition that facilitates the development of a hybrid programming-based scheduling approach, effectively combining the strengths of both mathematical and constraint programming models. As demonstrated through extensive computational experiments, our proposed approach achieves an average reduction of 20% in HCT completion time in comparison with its existing peers. It consistently and timely provides the high-quality solutions that meet the required deadlines. © 2014 IEEE.

Advances in computing power and data availability have led to growing sophistication in mechanistic mathematical models of social dynamics. Increasingly these models are used to inform real-world policy decision-making, often with significant time sensitivity. One such modeling approach is agent-based modeling, which offers particular strengths for capturing spatial and behavioral realism, and for in-silico experiments (varying input parameters and assumptions to explore their downstream impact on key outcomes). To be useful in the real-world, these models must be able to qualitatively or quantitatively capture observed empirical phenomena, forming the starting point for subsequent experimentation. Computational constraints often form a significant hurdle to timely calibration and policy analysis in high-resolution agent-based models. In this paper, we present a technical solution to address this bottleneck, substantially increasing efficiency and thus widening the range of utility for policy models. We illustrate our approach with a case study using a previously published and widely used epidemiological model. © 2024, CC BY.

Background Impulsivity in highly heritable attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been studied using neural activity via fMRI or genetic data, but rarely with multivariate methods linking both. We investigated coupled neural activity and gene expression signatures, using parallel independent component analysis (pICA) and Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development data. Methods Children with ADHD ( n = 394; 63% males) and healthy controls ( n = 1,000; 47% males) of European ancestry were included. The subjects were randomly divided into 80% discovery and 20% replication datasets with demographic stratification. We analyzed neural activity and gene expressions from the discovery datasets using pICA and extracted paired independent components (pICs). The loading coefficients of the pICs were utilized to predict behavioral and cognitive data for stop signal task (SST) in replication datasets. Results We identified three pICs estimated from gene expression in the cortex, cerebellum, and nucleus accumbens. Significant neural activity was mainly localized to the orbital/inferior/middle frontal gyri, rectal gyrus, precuneus, inferior temporal gyrus, inferior parietal lobule, and cerebellum. Significant gene components were associated with immunoglobulin, taste receptor, and immunity-related terms and were overlapped with ADHD-related genes. The extracted fMRI-/Gene-ICs were significantly correlated with mean reaction time, stop signal reaction time of SST, and behavioral inhibition with a large boost in sensitivity when both the paired fMRI-/Gene-ICs and their interaction were used in a multimodal regression analysis. Conclusion We reported biologically plausible pairs of neural activity and gene sets using pICA, which were significantly associated with ADHD impulsivity-related behavioral and cognitive data.

INTRODUCTION: More intermuscular fat (IMF) has been associated with lower cognitive performance through mechanisms that are not fully elucidated. METHODS: The associations of 7628 plasma proteins with IMF were assessed in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study on Aging (n = 941, mean age = 66.7 ± 15.2) and validated in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults Study (n = 2451, mean age = 50.2 ± 3.6). Processing speed was assessed by Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST). Associations between the main exposures, outcome, and mediators were evaluated using linear regression, and mediating effects were assessed by causal mediation analysis. RESULTS: There were 722 plasma proteins associated with IMF in both the discovery and replication cohorts (false discovery rate [FDR] adjusted p ≤ 0.05). Of these, 26 mediated the relationship between IMF and DSST, with effects ranging from 2.8% to 20.9% (p ≤ 0.05). These proteins represented synaptic function and organization, and growth factor binding (FDR adjusted p ≤ 0.05). DISCUSSION: Reducing IMF may improve processing speed through effects on growth factor and synaptic activity. Highlights: Higher intermuscular fat is associated with lower processing speed, consistently across populations that represent different demographic characteristics. There is a robust plasma proteomic profile of intermuscular fat that is assessed in the abdominal and thigh skeletal muscle. The proteins associated with intermuscular fat reflect signals that are reflective of synaptic function and organization, as well as other molecular pathways such as growth factor binding. Circulating proteins partially explain the association between higher intermuscular fat and lower processing speed, suggesting that higher intermuscular fat effects processing speed through pathways including synaptic functions and growth factor binding. © 2025 The Author(s). The economics of utility-scale portable energy storage systems in a high-renewable grid

Summary: Battery storage is expected to play a crucial role in the low-carbon transformation of energy systems. The deployment of battery storage in the power gird, however, is currently severely limited by its low economic viability, which results from not only high capital costs but also the lack of flexible and efficient utilization schemes and business models. Making utility-scale battery storage portable through trucking unlocks its capability to provide various on-demand services. We introduce the potential applications of utility-scale portable energy storage and investigate its economics in California using a spatiotemporal decision model that determines the optimal operation and transportation schedules of portable storage. We show that mobilizing energy storage can increase its life-cycle revenues by 70% in some areas and improve renewable energy integration by relieving local transmission congestion. The life-cycle revenue of spatiotemporal arbitrage can fully compensate for the costs of portable energy storage system in several regions in California, including San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Area. Label-free electrochemical biosensors have many desirable characteristics in terms of miniaturization, scalability, digitization, and other attributes associated with point-of-care (POC) applications. In the era of COVID-19 and pandemic preparedness, further development of such biosensors will be immensely beneficial for rapid testing and disease management. Label-free electrochemical biosensors often employ [Fe(CN)6]-3/4 redox probes to detect low concentration target analytes as they dramatically enhance sensitivity. However, such Faradaic-based sensors are reported to experience baseline signal drift, which compromises the performance of these devices. Here we describe the use of a mecaptohexanoic (MHA) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) modified Au-interdigitated electrode arrays (IDA) to investigate the origin of the baseline signal drift, developed a protocol to resolve the issue, and presented insights into the underlying mechanism on the working of label-free electrochemical biosensors. Using this protocol, we demonstrate the application of MHA SAM modified Au-IDA for POC analysis of human serum samples. We describe the use of a label-free electrochemical biosensor based on covalently conjugated SARS-CoV-2 spike protein for POC detection of COVID-19 antibodies. The test requires a short incubation time (10 min), and has a sensitivity of 35.4/decade and LOD of 21 ng/mL. Negligible cross reactivity to seasonal human coronavirus or other endogenous antibodies was observed. Our studies also show that Faradaic biosensors are ∼17 times more sensitive than non-Faradaic biosensors. We believe the work presented here contributes to the fundamental understanding of the underlying mechanisms of baseline signal drift and will be applicable to future development of electrochemical biosensors for POC applications. © 2023, The Authors. Fine particulate matter emissions from electric vehicle fast charging stations

The global shift to electric vehicles necessitates the expansion of Direct Current Fast Charging (DCFC) stations, yet the related environmental and public health impacts remain unclear. Here, we report that the power cabinet at DCFC stations emit fine particulate matter (PM2.5). We collected integrated filter samples from 50 DCFC stations across 47 cities in Los Angeles County, California. The daily PM2.5 concentrations were between 7.3 and 39.0 µg m−3, significantly higher than urban background sites (p = 0.02) and the nearest U.S. EPA monitoring stations (p 2.5 mass concentration, particle size distribution, and other pollutants, as well as characterized particle chemical compositions on integrated filter samples. Our results indicate that these particles, primarily in the sub-micrometer range (0.5–1.0 µm), are likely due to particle resuspension from the power cabinets. PM2.5 samples from power cabinets showed higher levels of brake and tire wear tracers (Ba, Cu, Zn) and dust tracers (Ca, Al, Fe) compared to samples from nearby chargers and background sites. With no current emission standards for DCFC, managing particle resuspension is crucial for improving air quality and protecting public health as transportation electrification advances. © 2025 The Author(s)

The release of ChatGPT in 2022 has catalyzed the adoption of large language models (LLMs) across diverse writing domains, including academic writing. However, this technological shift has raised critical questions regarding the prevalence of LLM usage in academic writing and its potential influence on the quality and impact of research articles. Here, we address these questions by analyzing preprint articles from arXiv, bioRxiv, and medRxiv between 2022 and 2024, employing a novel LLM usage detection tool. Our study reveals that LLMs have been widely adopted in biomedical and other types of academic writing since late 2022. Notably, we noticed that LLM usage is linked to an enhanced impact of research articles after examining their correlation, as measured by citation numbers. Furthermore, we observe that LLMs influence specific content types in academic writing, including hypothesis formulation, conclusion summarization, description of phenomena, and suggestions for future work. Collectively, our findings underscore the potential benefits of LLMs in scientific communication, suggesting that they may not only streamline the writing process but also enhance the dissemination and impact of research findings across disciplines. © 2025 The Author(s).
