In this work, we report the outcomes from the IUPUI STEM outreach program “STEMCorp” that inspires high school students to pursue STEM majors. The STEMCorp program was modeled after the Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Initiative (MURI) at IUPUI. MURI research program introduces undergraduate students from at least two different departments with mentors from different disciplines to address research issues that may compose both engineering and sciences. The STEMCorp program brings undergraduate students to work with faculty and high school teachers to create a positive impact in enriching the high school students by introducing them to engineering and science with emphasis on nanotechnology for future careers. The program describes the collaborative activities between faculty, undergraduate students and high school STEM teachers in the creation of project-based, student-centered learning modules in the field of nanotechnology. The paper details the activities of the STEMCorp participants including their experiences in developing working partnerships and creating and implementing learning modules in the designated high school courses. The success of the program is assessed by the measurable outcomes of high school students' research projects. Specifically, two different learning modules are presented, including the processes used in the development of these modules and their outcomes. The collaborative research discussions between the faculty, undergraduate students, and high school teachers are detailed, covering research methodologies, hypothesis, and expected outcomes.

An induction theorem-inspired approach is adopted for the design of a Huygens source nanoparticle laser. The proposed nanoparticle consists of a three-layer silicon-silver-silicon (Si-Ag-Si) concentric sphere, which enables the amplified and balanced excitation of the electric and magnetic dipole modes with scattering efficiencies in excess of 600. Moreover, with its dipolar modes designed to be in balance, its scattering directivity pattern is an almost perfect replica of the cardioid radiation pattern of a Huygens source, featuring D scat = 3 in the forward direction and a null (D scat ≃ 0) in the backward direction. Innovative electromagnetic force manipulation and trapping effects that are empowered with Huygens source nanoparticle lasers are considered.

The integration of bulk solar and wind generation into the electric power network of Puerto Rico introduces new operational and economic challenges. When local atmospheric conditions deteriorates and causes unexpected mismatches in short-term forecasts, the electric network will be subjected to strong active power ramp events that online generation units may not be able to support and manage. Uncertainties in the variability of the net-load prediction may result in over-commitment of rapid-response resources. Additionally, from the perspective of a variable generation developer, these events may increase the chances of curtailment. Thus, quantifying the intensity and frequency of these events in a spatial-temporal framework, and evaluating its interaction with electricity demand, should provide a better understanding of the impact that bulk intermittent generation will have on the rest of the existing generation portfolio of the island. Characterizing the variability of solar and wind ramp events in Puerto Rico, and its effect on the power system capability to adapt, is the main scope of this investigation. By synthesizing solar radiation and wind speed data sets, a one-year renewable energy time series was re-created by means of Markov Chain Processes. The spatial-temporal characteristics of solar and wind energy ramp events in the island were evaluated and the impact of these events on the existing inter-hour requirements was quantified for the 12%, 15% and 20% yearly renewable generation targets. Results have shown that predictable ramp events will create most of the challenges at sunset, mostly due to the fact that intermittent generation will ramp down continuously as electricity demand increases. Meanwhile, for the 15% and 20% targets, VG will be detrimental during off-peak hours, when base-load units are expected to be committed to their minimum operational limits.

Whey is an abundant by-product of cheese production process and it is considered a special waste due to its high nutritional load and hypertrophic potential. Technologies for whey valorization are available. They can convert such waste into high-value products, like whey proteins. However, the remaining liquid (called permeate) is still considered as a polluting waste due to its high lactose concentration. The alcoholic fermentation of lactose into ethanol will simultaneously achieve two important goals: safe disposal of a pollutant waste and green energy production. This methodology paper illustrates the workflow carried out to design and realize an optimized microorganism that can efficiently perform the lactose-to-ethanol conversion, engineered via synthetic biology experimental and computational approaches.

Obesity and extent of emphysema depicted at CT

Aim: To investigate the underlying relationship between obesity and the extent of emphysema depicted at CT. Methods and materials: A dataset of 477 CT examinations was retrospectively collected from a study of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The low attenuation areas (LAAs;≤950 HU) of the lungs were identified. The extent of emphysema (denoted as %LAA) was defined as the percentage of LAA divided by the lung volume. The association between log-transformed %LAA and body mass index (BMI) adjusted for age, sex, the forced expiratory volume in one second as percent predicted value (FEV1% predicted), and smoking history (pack years) was assessed using multiple linear regression analysis. Results: After adjusting for age, gender, smoking history, and FEV1% predicted, BMI was negatively associated with severe emphysema in patients with COPD. Specifically, one unit increase in BMI is associated with a 0.93-fold change (95% CI: 0.91-0.96, p < 0.001) in %LAA;the estimated %LAA for males was 1.75 (95% CI: 1.36-2.26, p < 0.001) times that of females;per 10% increase in FEV1% predicated is associated with a 0.72-fold change (95% CI: 0.69-0.76, p < 0.001) in %LAA. Conclusion: Increasing obesity is negatively associated with severity of emphysema independent of gender, age, and smoking history. © 2015 The Royal College of Radiologists.

Comprehensive analysis of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) integration requires tools that provide computational power and flexibility. In this context, throughout this paper PHIL simulations are performed to emulate the energy management system of a real microgrid including a diesel synchronous machine and inverter-based sources. Moreover, conventional frequency and voltage droops were incorporated into the respective inverters. The results were verified at the real microgrid installation in CRES premises. This research work is divided into two steps: A) Real time in RSCAD/RTDS and PHIL simulations where the diesel generator's active power droop control is evaluated, the battery inverter's droop curves are simulated and the load sharing for parallel operation of the system's generation units is examined. B) microgrid experiments during which various tests were executed concerning the diesel generator and the battery inverters in order to examine their dynamic operation within the LV islanded power system.

Spectrograms provide an effective way for time-frequency representation (TFR). Among these, short-time Fourier transform (STFT) based spectrograms are extensively used for various applications. However, STFT spectrogram and its revised versions suffer from two main issues: (1) there is a trade-off between time resolution and frequency resolution, and (2) almost all existing TFR methods, including STFT spectrogram, are not suitable to deal with nonuniformly sampled data. In this paper, we address these two problems by presenting alternative approaches, namely short-time amplitude and phase estimation (ST-APES) and short-time sparse learning via iterative minimization (ST-SLIM), to improve the resolution of STFT based spectrogram, and extend the applicability of our approaches to signals with arbitrary sampling patterns. Apart from evenly sampled data, we will consider missing data as well as arbitrary nonuniformly sampled data, at the same time. We will demonstrate via simulation results the superiority of our proposed algorithms in terms of resolution, sidelobe suppression and applicability to signals with arbitrary sampling patterns.

Automatic license plate detection(ALPD) is to detect sedan license plate information from an image or a sequence of recorded images. ALPD has many important applications, such as highway traffic monitor system, highway speeding monitor system. ASLPD as a real life application has to be a quickly and successfully process license plates under different environmental conditions, such as indoors, outdoors, day or night time. In this paper, we present a novel and fast detection method of the sedan license plate taken from anterior orientation. This method has a 96.1% success rate for detecting sedan license plate correctly. Our method is efficient and allows for completely automatic detection of sedan license plate.

Quantized kernel least mean square (QKLMS) algorithm is an effective up-to-date adaptive nonlinear learning algorithm which also has good performance for kernel structure growing control. It achieves good results under Gaussian noise environment. In this paper, a new algorithm, quantized kernel least mean mixed norm (QKLMMN), is proposed for adaptive nonlinear learning with non-Gaussian additive noise statistical distribution models (including combination). As an alternative of conventional squared error criteria, mixed-norm criteria is utilized for our algorithm. A comprehensive convergence analysis is carried out. Experiments for nonlinear time series prediction and nonlinear system identification are conducted. Experimental results verified the effectiveness and superiority of our proposed algorithm compared with other kernel based adaptive nonlinear learning algorithms under non-Gaussian noise environment.
