We present the Maple package TDDS (Thomas Decomposition of Differential Systems). Given a polynomially nonlinear differential system, which in addition to equationsmay contain inequations, this package computes a decomposition of it into a finite set of differentially triangular and algebraically simple subsystems whose subsets of equations are involutive. Usually the decomposed system is substantially easier to investigate and solve both analytically and numerically. The distinctive property of a Thomas decomposition is disjointness of the solution sets of the output subsystems. Thereby, a solution of a well-posed initial problem belongs to one and only one output subsystem. The Thomas decomposition is fully algorithmic. It allows to perform important elements of algebraic analysis of an input differential system such as: Verifying consistency, i.e., the existence of solutions;detecting the arbitrariness in the general analytic solution;given an additional equation, checking whether this equation is satisfied by all common solutions of the input system;eliminating a part of dependent variables from the system if such elimination is possible;revealing hidden constraints on dependent variables, etc. Examples illustrating the use of the package are given. A unified framework for manifold landmarking

The success of semi-supervised manifold learning is highly dependent on the quality of the labeled samples. Active manifold learning aims to select and label representative landmarks on a manifold from a given set of samples to improve semi-supervised manifold learning. In this paper, we propose a novel active manifold learning method based on a unified framework of manifold landmarking. In particular, our method combines geometric manifold landmarking methods with algebraic ones. We achieve this by using the Gershgorin circle theorem to construct an upper bound on the learning error that depends on the landmarks and the manifold's alignment matrix in a way that captures both the geometric and algebraic criteria. We then attempt to select landmarks so as to minimize this bound by iteratively deleting the Gershgorin circles corresponding to the selected landmarks. We also analyze the complexity, scalability, and robustness of our method through simulations, and demonstrate its superiority compared to existing methods. In the area of biomedical engineering, digital-microfluidic biochips (DMFBs) have received considerable attention, because of their capability of providing an efficient and reliable platform for conducting point-of-care clinical diagnostics. System reliability, in turn, mandates error-recoverability while implementing biochemical assays on-chip for medical applications. Unfortunately, the technology of DMFBs is not yet fully equipped to handle error-recovery from various microfluidic operations involving droplet motion and reaction. Recently, a number of cyber-physical systems have been proposed to provide real-time checking and error-recovery in assays based on the feedback received from a few on-chip checkpoints. However, in order to synthesize robust feedback systems for different types of DMFBs, certain practical issues need to be considered such as co-optimization of checkpoint placement and layout of droplet-routing pathways. For application-specific DMFBs, we propose here an algorithm that minimizes the number of checkpoints and determines their locations to cover every path in a given droplet-routing solution. Next, for general-purpose DMFBs, where the checkpoints are pre-deployed in specific locations, we present a checkpoint-aware routing algorithm such that every droplet-routing path passes through at least one checkpoint to enable error-recovery and to ensure physical routability of all droplets. Our experiments on assay benchmarks show encouraging results in terms of latest-arrival-time and routability of droplets. The proposed methods thus provide convenient reliability-hardening mechanisms for a wide class of cyber-physical DMFBs.

Exercise-based rehabilitation plays a key role for patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) in improving their well-being and reducing their symptoms. Monitoring and assessing the exercise response at an individual level is critical toward achieving better health outcomes. 15 exercise sessions performed by 5 CVD patients and 9 sessions from 3 regularly active individuals were monitored, and heart rate (HR) data were acquired. A model based on the HR dynamics during exercising at different intensities was built, and simulations were performed to assess performance in different scenarios of exercise selection. Our results show that the application of simple rules in exercise selection, which consider both the HR and the beneficial HR zones of individuals, can lead to beneficial execution of exercise programs (%time spent in beneficial HR zones: 60.6±27.5 for CVD patients). Personalized guidance during exercise has the potential to significantly contribute in the beneficial execution of exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation programs. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2018.

The interaction between proteins and DNA is a key driving force in a significant number of biological processes such as transcriptional regulation, repair, recombination, splicing, and DNA modification. The identification of DNAbinding sites and the specificity of target proteins in binding to these regions are two important steps in understanding the mechanisms of these biological activities. A number of highthroughput technologies have recently emerged that try to quantify the affinity between proteins and DNA motifs. Despite their success, these technologies have their own limitations and fall short in precise characterization of motifs, and as a result, require further downstream analysis to extract useful and interpretable information from a haystack of noisy and inaccurate data. Here we propose MotifMark, a new algorithm based on graph theory and machine learning, that can find binding sites on candidate probes and rank their specificity in regard to the underlying transcription factor. We developed a pipeline to analyze experimental data derived from compact universal protein binding microarrays and benchmarked it against two of the most accurate motif search methods. Our results indicate that MotifMark can be a viable alternative technique for prediction of motif from protein binding microarrays and possibly other related high-throughput techniques. This paper presents a novel two-phase method for audio representation, discriminative and compact audio representation (DCAR), and evaluates its performance at detecting events and scenes in consumer-produced videos. In the first phase of DCAR, each audio track is modeled using a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) that includes several components to capture the variability within that track. The second phase takes into account both global structure and local structure. In this phase, the components are rendered more discriminative and compact by formulating an optimization problem on a Grassmannian manifold. The learned components can effectively represent the structure of audio. Our experiments used the YLI-MED and DCASE Acoustic Scenes datasets. The results show that variants on the proposed DCAR representation consistently outperform four popular audio representations (mv-vector, i-vector, GMM, and HEM-GMM). The advantage is significant for both easier and harder discrimination tasks;we discuss how these performance differences across tasks follow from how each type of model leverages (or does not leverage) the intrinsic structure of the data. © 2017 IEEE.

We are in the midst of a major paradigm shift in how we manage radio spectrum. This paradigm shift is necessitated by the growth of wireless services of all types and the demand pressure imposed on limited spectrum resources under legacy management regimes. The shift is feasible because of advances in radio and networking technologies that make it possible to share spectrum dynamically in all possible dimensions-i.e., across frequencies, time, location, users, uses, and networks. Realizing the full potential of this shift to Dynamic Spectrum Sharing will require the co-evolution of wireless technologies, markets, and regulatory policies;a process which is occurring on a global scale. This paper provides a current overview of major technological and regulatory reforms that are leading the way toward a global paradigm shift to more flexible, dynamic, market-based ways to manage and share radio spectrum resources. We focus on current efforts to implement database-driven approaches for managing the shared co-existence of users with heterogeneous access and interference protection rights, and discuss open research challenges. © 2015 IEEE.

We consider the lattice, L, of all subsets of a multidimensional contingency table and establish the properties of monotonicity and supermodularity for the marginalization function, n(·), on L. We derive from the supermodularity of n(·) some generalized Fréchet inequalities complementing and extending inequalities of Dobra and Fienberg. This paper presents the establishment of a research experience for undergraduates (REU) site at New York institute of Technology (NYIT). The objective of the REU site is to train undergraduates to conduct research and also provide participants with professional development opportunities from academia, industry, and government agencies. The major goals of the project are the following: 1) to introduce security research on smartphones and mobile networks to undergraduate students and prepare them for graduate studies;2) to increase the number of women and minority students from underrepresented groups who engage in security research and provide support for them to become security researchers;3) to provide research opportunities in a high-demand area to those who would otherwise have no access to research facilities;and 4) to increase awareness of, and approaches to, challenging problems of security in mobile devices and networks. We shared our experience of student recruitment, faculty mentor support, research activity planning and logistics of running an REU site at high living cost metropolitan area. The outcome and success stories of students' accomplishments are outlined in this article. © American Society for engineering Education, 2016.
