Network coverage is one of the fundamental requirements of any business of a service provider. Mobile operators are expected to deploy base stations in an effective way in order to cover most of the residential areas of a particular country. Improved network coverage leads to increase total revenue, provide end users with enhanced Quality of Services (QoS) anytime anywhere, and play vital role in the development of telecom sector. In this paper, we measure and statistically analyze network coverage of mobile operators in Afghanistan. Our study is based on primary data collected on random basis from 1,515 mobile phone users of cellular operators. The relationship between "No Network Coverage" in some residential areas and "Satisfaction of Mobile Phone Users" is also investigated. We furthermore propose realistic, feasible and cost-efficient solutions to mobile operators and policy makers in order to expand network coverage to non-covered residential areas as well as enhance the performance of networks in existing covered areas of the country. With the advent of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), SaaS developers are facing many challenges associated with the multi-tenancy and the dramatically increased number of users. In order to achieve resource-optimized, on-demand dynamic scaling across multiple tenants, and reduce costs, in this paper, a new platform, named SmartVM, is created to enable SaaS developer to create, customize, and deploy SaaS solutions in a multi-tier microservice-based manner. We develop an e-commerce SaaS prototype to evaluate effectiveness and efficiency of SmartVM. The results show that the SmartVM deployments outperforms the conventional monolithic and microservice deployments in smart monitoring, cost reduction, and resource optimization.

Matching dynamical systems, through different forms of conjugacies and equivalences, has long been a fundamental concept, and a powerful tool, in the study and classification of nonlinear dynamic behavior (e.g. through normal forms). In this paper we will argue that the use of the Koopman operator and its spectrum is particularly well suited for this endeavor, both in theory, but also especially in view of recent data-driven algorithm developments. We believe, and document through illustrative examples, that this can nontrivially extend the use and applicability of the Koopman spectral theoretical and computational machinery beyond modeling and prediction, towards what can be considered as a systematic discovery of "Cole-Hopf-type" transformations for dynamics. In this paper, a novel empirical data analysis approach (abbreviated as EDA) is introduced which is entirely data-driven and free from restricting assumptions and pre-defined problem- or user-specific parameters and thresholds. It is well known that the traditional probability theory is restricted by strong prior assumptions which are often impractical and do not hold in real problems. Machine learning methods, on the other hand, are closer to the real problems but they usually rely on problem- or user-specific parameters or thresholds making it rather art than science. In this paper we introduce a theoretically sound yet practically unrestricted and widely applicable approach that is based on the density in the data space. Since the data may have exactly the same value multiple times we distinguish between the data points and unique locations in the data space. The number of data points, k is larger or equal to the number of unique locations, l and at least one data point occupies each unique location. The number of different data points that have exactly the same location in the data space (equal value), f can be seen as frequency. Through the combination of the spatial density and the frequency of occurrence of discrete data points, a new concept called multimodal typicality, τMM is proposed in this paper. It offers a closed analytical form that represents ensemble properties derived entirely from the empirical observations of data. Moreover, it is very close (yet different) from the histograms, from the probability density function (pdf) as well as from fuzzy set membership functions. Remarkably, there is no need to perform complicated pre-processing like clustering to get the multimodal representation. Moreover, the closed form for the case of Euclidean, Mahalanobis type of distance as well as some other forms (e.g. cosine-based dissimilarity) can be expressed recursively making it applicable to data streams and online algorithms. Modern ground-based gravitational wave (GW) detectors require a complex interferometer configuration with multiple coupled optical cavities. Since achieving the resonances of the arm cavities is the most challenging among the lock acquisition processes, the scheme called arm length stabilization (ALS) had been employed for lock acquisition of the arm cavities. We designed a new type of the ALS, which is compatible with the interferometers having long arms like the next generation GW detectors. The features of the new ALS are that the control configuration is simpler than those of previous ones and that it is not necessary to lay optical fibers for the ALS along the kilometer-long arms of the detector. Along with simulations of its noise performance, an experimental test of the new ALS was performed utilizing a single arm cavity of KAGRA. This paper presents the first results of the test where we demonstrated that lock acquisition of the arm cavity was achieved using the new ALS. We also demonstrated that the root mean square of residual noise was measured to be 8.2 Hz in units of frequency, which is smaller than the linewidth of the arm cavity and thus low enough to lock the full interferometer of KAGRA in a repeatable and reliable manner. Experimental design for non-parametric correction of misspecified dynamical models

We consider a class of misspecified dynamical models where the governing term is only approximately known. Under the assumption that observations of the system’s evolution are accessible for various initial conditions, our goal is to infer a non-parametric correction to the misspecified driving term such as to faithfully represent the system dynamics and devise system evolution predictions for unobserved initial conditions. We model the unknown correction term as a Gaussian Process and analyze the problem of efficient experimental design to find an optimal correction term under constraints such as a limited experimental budget. We suggest a novel formulation for experimental design for this Gaussian Process and show that approximately optimal (up to a constant factor) designs may be efficiently derived by utilizing results from the literature on submodular optimization. Despite the crucial role of interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in a Co(Fe)/MgO-based magnetic tunnel junction, the underlying mechanism is still being debated. Here, we report an anatomical study of the oxygen and Mg effect on Pt/Co bilayers through repeated in situ anomalous Hall effect measurements, controlled oxygen exposure, and Mg deposition in an ultrahigh vacuum system. We found that chemisorbed oxygen not only quenches the effective magnetic moment of the Co surface layer, but also softens its magnetic anisotropy. However, a subsequent Mg dusting on the oxygen preexposed Pt/Co surface can recover the magnetic anisotropy. The ab initio calculations on the exchange splitting and orbital hybridization near the Fermi level give a clear physical explanation of the experimental observations. Our results suggest that the Co(Fe)-O-M bond plays a more important role than the widely perceived Co(Fe)-O bond does in realizing interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in Co(Fe)/MgO heterostructures.

Automatic speech recognition is more and more widely and effectively used. Nevertheless, in some automatic speech analysis tasks the state of the art is surprisingly poor. One of these is "diarization", the task of determining who spoke when. Diarization is key to processing meeting audio and clinical interviews, extended recordings such as police body cam or child language acquisition data, and any other speech data involving multiple speakers whose voices are not cleanly separated into individual channels. Overlapping speech, environmental noise and suboptimal recording techniques make the problem harder. During the JSALT Summer Workshop at CMU in 2017, an international team of researchers worked on several aspects of this problem, including calibration of the state of the art, detection of overlaps, enhancement of noisy recordings, and classification of shorter speech segments. This paper sketches the workshop's results, and announces plans for a "Diarization Challenge" to encourage further progress.
