Future heterogeneous systems will integrate CPUs and GPUs on a single chip to achieve high computing performance as well as high throughput. In general, it would discard the current discrete pattern and will build a uniformed shared memory system avoiding explicit data movement among CPUs and GPUs connected by high throughput NoC. We propose a scalable cache coherence solution Fusion Coherence for Heterogeneous Kilo-core System Architecture by integrating CPUs and GPUs on a single chip to mitigate the coherence bandwidth side effects of GPU memory requests as well as overhead of copying data among memories of CPUs and GPUs. The Fusion Coherence coalesces L3 data cache of CPUs and GPUs based on a uniformed physical memory, further integrates a region directory and cuckoo directory into two levels of cache coherence directory without modifying cache coherence protocol. According to the experimental results with a subset of Rodina benchmarks, it is effective to decrease the overhead of data transfer and get an average execution speedup by 2.4x. The highest speedup is approximate to 4x for data-intensive applications. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

In a variety of documents, ranging from forms to archive documents and books with annotations, machine printed and handwritten text may coexist in the same document image, raising significant issues within the recognition pipeline. It is, therefore, necessary to separate the two types of text so that it becomes feasible to apply different recognition methodologies to each modality. In this paper, a new approach is proposed which strives towards identifying and separating handwritten from machine printed text using the Bag of Visual Words model (BoVW). Initially, blocks of interest are detected in the document image. For each block, a descriptor is calculated based on the BoVW. The final characterization of the blocks as Handwritten, Machine Printed or Noise is made by a decision scheme which relies upon the combination of binary SVM classifiers. The promising performance of the proposed approach is shown by using a consistent evaluation methodology which couples meaningful measures along with new datasets dedicated to the problem upon consideration. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. For high-performance embedded hard-real-time systems, ASICs and FPGAs hold advantages over generalpurpose processors and graphics accelerators (GPUs). However, developing signal processing architectures from scratch requires significant resources. Our design methodology is based on sets of configurable building blocks that provide storage, dataflow, computation, and control. Based on our building blocks, we generate hundreds of thousands of our dynamic streaming engine processors that we call DSEs. We store our DSEs in a repository that can be queried for (online) design space exploration. From this repository, DSEs can be downloaded and instantiated within milliseconds on FPGAs. If a loss of flexibility can be tolerated then ASIC implementations are feasible as well. In this article we focus on FPGA implementations. Our DSEs vary in cores, computational lanes, bitwidths, power consumption, and frequency. To the best of our knowledge we are the first to propose online design space exploration based on repositories of precompiled cores that are assembled of common building blocks. For demonstration purposes we map algorithms for image processing and financial mathematics to DSEs and compare the performance to existing highly optimized signal and graphics accelerators. © 2014 ACM.

Outlier detection is a problem that has been largely studied in the past few years due to its great applicability in real world problems (e.g. financial, social, climate, security). Fault detection in industrial processes is one of these problems. In that context, several methods have been proposed in literature to address fault detection. In this paper we propose a comparative analysis of three recently introduced outlier detection methods: RDE, RDE with Forgetting and TEDA. Such methods were applied to the data set provided in DAMADICS benchmark, a very well-known real data tool for fault detection applications. The results, however, can be extended to similar problems of the area. Therewith, in this work we compare the main features of each method as well as the results obtained with them.

We study the utility of social learning in a distributed detection model with agents sharing the same goal: a collective decision that optimizes an agreed upon criterion. We show that social learning is helpful in some cases but is provably futile (and thus essentially a distraction) in other cases. Specifically, we consider Bayesian binary hypothesis testing performed by a distributed detection and fusion system, where all decision-making agents have binary votes that carry equal weight. Decision-making agents in the team sequentially make local decisions based on their own private signals and all precedent local decisions. It is shown that the optimal decision rule is not affected by precedent local decisions when all agents observe conditionally independent and identically distributed private signals. Perfect Bayesian reasoning will cancel out all effects of social learning. When the agents observe private signals with different signal-to-noise ratios, social learning is again futile if the team decision is only approved by unanimity. Otherwise, social learning can strictly improve the team performance. Furthermore, the order in which agents make their decisions affects the team decision. © 1991-2012 IEEE.

This paper introduces our dedicated authenticated encryption scheme ICEPOLE. ICEPOLE is a high-speed hardware-oriented scheme, suitable for high-throughput network nodes or generally any environment where specialized hardware (such as FPGAs or ASICs) can be used to provide high data processing rates. ICEPOLE-128 (the primary ICEPOLE variant) is very fast. On the modern FPGA device Virtex 6, a basic iterative architecture of ICEPOLE reaches 41 Gbits/s, which is over 10 times faster than the equivalent implementation of AES-128-GCM. The throughput-to-area ratio is also substantially better when compared to AES-128-GCM. We have carefully examined the security of the algorithm through a range of cryptanalytic techniques and our findings indicate that ICEPOLE offers high security level. © International Association for Cryptologic Research 2014.

In this paper, we present an analysis of a new class of domain names: disposable domains. We observe that popular web applications, along with other Internet services, systematically use this new class of domain names. Disposable domains are likely generated automatically, characterized by a "one-time use" pattern, and appear to be used as a way of "signaling" via DNS queries. To shed light on the pervasiveness of disposable domains, we study 24 days of live DNS traffic spanning a year observed at a large Internet Service Provider. We find that disposable domains increased from 23.1% to 27.6% of all queried domains, and from 27.6% to 37.2% of all resolved domains observed daily. While this creative use of DNS may enable new applications, it may also have unanticipated negative consequences on the DNS caching infrastructure, DNSSEC validating resolvers, and passive DNS data collection systems.

Merging WBAN systems with cloud computing is an efficient solution to overcome limitations inherent in WBAN, especially in critical human-related applications such as remote health monitoring. In cloud-based WBAN, the nodes are classified into WBAN sensors that report measurements about the human body and WBAN actuators that receive commands from the medical staff and perform actions. Authenticating these commands is a critical security issue as any alteration may lead to serious consequences. This paper presents a light-weight public-key authentication protocol for cloud-based WBAN systems. The proposed protocol is based on the modified Rabin authentication algorithm which is customized in this paper by making some of its components run in parallel. To prove the efficiency of the modified Rabin we implemented the algorithm with different hardware settings using Tmote Sky motes. The Rabin algorithm with and without the parallel settings is also programmed on FPGA to evaluate its design and performance. The results show that secure, direct, instant, and authenticated commands can be delivered from the medical staff located at the cloud side to the WBAN nodes located in/on the human body. Compared to other public-key protocols implemented on the motes, Rabin algorithm achieved extremely faster verification and reasonable signature gen- eration speed. Moreover, the suggested parallel settings of the Rabin signature generation significantly reduced the delays( by almost 80%) which is a critical issue in WBAN applications. Copyright © 2014 ICST.
