There continues to be many advances in the theory and practice of Modeling and Simulation (M&S). However, some of these can be considered as Grand Challenges;issues whose solutions require significant focused effort across a community, sometimes with ground-breaking collaborations with new disciplines. In 2002, the first M&S Grand Challenges Workshop was held in Dagstuhl, Germany, in an attempt to focus efforts on key areas. In 2012, a new initiative was launched to continue these Grand Challenge efforts. Panel members of this third Grand Challenge present their views on M&S Grand Challenges. Themes presented in this panel include M&S Methodology;Agent-based M M&S in Systems engineering;Cyber Systems Modeling;and Network Simulation. © 2013 ACM.

Visual appeal (VA), as judged by users accessing different websites, has been shown to impact overall user preferences and satisfaction. In the context of Web Quality of Experience (QoE), we hypothesize that VA has a non-trivial impact on end user quality perception and hence needs to be accounted for when modeling overall Web QoE. In this paper, we aim to quantify the impact of VA factors on perceived visual design quality for different types of tested websites. We carried out two large-scale (>350 users each) crowd-sourced campaigns to test the influence of several factors often found in design best practices recommendations. While results have identified color goodness and font goodness as Key Influence Factors (KIF) for VA, an analysis of user demographics has further shown a strong impact of user's origin on subjective ratings. By quantifying the impact of identified KIFs on VA, we provide guidelines for successful VA manipulations to be considered in future Web QoE subjective tests.

Recommendation systems are a popular marketing strategy for online service providers. These systems predict a customer's future preferences from the past behaviors of that customer and the other customers. Most of the popular online stores process millions of transactions per day; therefore, providing quick and quality recommendations using the large amount of data collected from past transactions can be challenging. Parallel processing power of GPUs can be used to accelerate the recommendation process. However, the amount of memory available on a GPU card is limited; thus, a number of passes may be required to completely process a large-scale dataset. This paper proposes two parallel, item-based recommendation algorithms implemented using the CUDA platform. Considering the high sparsity of the user-item data, we utilize two compression techniques to reduce the required number of passes and increase the speedup. The experimental results on synthetic and real-world datasets show that our algorithms outperform the respective CPU implementations and also the naïve GPU implementation which does not use compression.

The amount of DNA strands available in a biological sample is a major limitation for many genomic bioanalyses. To amplify the traces of DNA strands, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is widely used for conducting subsequent experiments. Compared to conventional instruments and analyzers, the execution of PCR on a digital microfluidic biochip (DMFB) can achieve short time-to-results, low reagent consumption, rapid heating/cooling rates, and high integration of multiple processing modules. However, the PCR biochip design methods in the literature are oblivious to the inherent randomness and complexity of bioanalyses, and they do not consider the interference among on-chip devices and the cost of droplet transportation. We present, for the first time, an integrated design method to optimize the complete PCR procedure, including (i) DNA amplification and termination control, (ii) resource placement that satisfies physical constraints needed to avoid interference, and (iii) droplet transportation needed for mixing and detection. We propose a statistical model for sensor feedback-driven (cyberphysical) on-line decision making in order to optimize and control the execution sequence for DNA amplification. Next, we present a geometric algorithm for layout design to avoid device interference and reduce the cost of droplet routing. Simulation results on three laboratory protocols demonstrate that the proposed design method results in a compact layout and produces an execution sequence for efficient control of PCR operations on a cyberphysical DMFB.

With the enormous growth of online reviews in Internet, sentiment analysis has received more and more attention in information retrieval and natural language processing community. Up to now there are very few researches conducted on sentiment analysis for Persian documents. This paper considers the problem of sentiment classification for online customer reviews in Persian language. One of the challenges of Persian language is using of a wide variety of declensional suffixes. Another common problem of Persian text is word spacing. In Persian in addition to white space as interwords space, an intra-word space called pseudo-space separates word's part. One more noticeable challenge in customer reviews in Persian language is that of utilizing many informal or colloquial words in text. In this paper we study these challenges by proposing a model for sentiment classification of Persian review documents. The proposed model is based on a lemmatization approach for Persian language and is employed Naive Bayes learning algorithm for classification. Additionally we present a new feature selection method based on the mutual information method to extract the best feature collection from the initial extracted features. Finally we evaluate the performance of the model on a manually gathered collection of cellphone reviews, where the results show the effectiveness of the proposed model.

This paper presents the underlying theory and the performance of a cluster using a new 2-hop network topology. This topology is constructed using a symmetric equation and Singer Difference Sets and is called SymSig. The degree of connections at each node with SymSig is about half compared to previous methods using Singer Difference Sets. A comparison with a cluster of Clos topology shows significant advantages. The worst case congestion in SymSig topology for unicast permutation is 2, where as in Clos it is proportional to the radix of the building block switches used. The number of switches required is smaller by about 25%, the size of the cluster is larger by about 15% and the worst bandwidth is better by about 50% for SymSig. These advantages are retained for peta and exascale systems. Its performance on a set of collectives like exchange-all, shift-all, broadcast-all and all-to-all send/receive shows improvements ranging from 39% to 83%. Its performance on a molecular dynamics application GROMMACS shows improvement of upto 33%. This network is particularly suitable for applications that require global all to all communications. The low latency of this network makes it scaleable and an attractive alternative for building peta and exascale systems.

Background: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a major cause of cancer-related death worldwide due to poor patient prognosis and clinical outcome. Here, we studied the genetic variations underlying NSCLC pathogenesis based on their association to patient outcome after gemcitabine therapy. Results: Bioinformatics analysis was used to investigate possible effects of POLA2 G583R (POLA2+1747 GG/GA, dbSNP ID: rs487989) in terms of protein function. Using biostatistics, POLA2+1747 GG/GA (rs487989, POLA2 G583R) was identified as strongly associated with mortality rate and survival time among NSCLC patients. It was also shown that POLA2+1747 GG/GA is functionally significant for protein localization via green fluorescent protein (GFP)-tagging and confocal laser scanning microscopy analysis. The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) causes DNA polymerase alpha subunit B to localize in the cytoplasm instead of the nucleus. This inhibits DNA replication in cancer cells and confers a protective effect in individuals with this SNP. Conclusions: The results suggest that POLA2+1747 GG/GA may be used as a prognostic biomarker of patient outcome in NSCLC pathogenesis. © 2014 Mah et al.;licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

Universal Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computation with Only Transversal Gates and Error Correction

Transversal implementations of encoded unitary gates are highly desirable for fault-tolerant quantum computation. Though transversal gates alone cannot be computationally universal, they can be combined with specially distilled resource states in order to achieve universality. We show that “triorthogonal” stabilizer codes, introduced for state distillation by Bravyi and Haah [Phys. Rev. A 86, 052329 (2012)], admit transversal implementation of the controlled-controlled-Z gate. We then construct a universal set of fault-tolerant gates without state distillation by using only transversal controlled-controlled-Z, transversal Hadamard, and fault-tolerant error correction. We also adapt the distillation procedure of Bravyi and Haah to Toffoli gates, improving on existing Toffoli distillation schemes.

Software birthmarks are unique and native characteristics of a binary executable program that can be used for detecting software piracy. API (Application Programming Interface) calls in an MS Windows binary executable can be used as software birthmarks when there are no source codes available to detect software similarity. However, it is inefficient to extract birthmarks from all API calls during the execution of a binary executable. In this paper, we propose an efficient scheme for comparing software similarity. To reduce the number of comparisons used in the proposed scheme, we extract only the core API calls that are explicitly used in different programs. The birthmarks used for comparing the similarity between two programs can be obtained by extracting these core API calls. Our experimental results show that this proposed birthmark scheme using core API calls is efficient for evaluating software similarity. Copyright 2013 ACM.
