Advances in mobile networking and information processing technologies have triggered vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) for traffic safety and value-added applications. Most efforts have been made to address the security concerns while little work has been done to investigate security and privacy for value-added applications in VANETs. To fill this gap, we propose a value-added application, specifically, a security and privacy preserving location-based service (LBS) scheme for VANETs. For each LBS transaction, the scheme provides authentication, integrity and non-repudiation for both the service provider and the user. A user can obtain the service in an anonymous way and hence user privacy is well protected. However, a tracing procedure can be invoked to find malicious users, thereby efficiently preventing users from abusing the anonymity provided by the system. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

We present the hardware design, software architecture, and core algorithms of Herb 2.0, a bimanual mobile manipulator developed at the Personal Robotics Lab at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA. We have developed Herb 2.0 to perform useful tasks for and with people in human environments. We exploit two key paradigms in human environments: that they have structure that a robot can learn, adapt and exploit, and that they demand general-purpose capability in robotic systems. In this paper, we reveal some of the structure present in everyday environments that we have been able to harness for manipulation and interaction, comment on the particular challenges on working in human spaces, and describe some of the lessons we learned from extensively testing our integrated platform in kitchen and office environments. © 2012 IEEE.

Distributed systems such as the Internet and wireless sensor networks must provide a high degree of resilience against errors and attacks. Besides steps that increase reliability of data and resources of the network, the topology structure itself plays a crucial role in the efficacy of the fault-tolerance behavior. The network topology is a supportive factor to reduce or avoid malfunction behavior of the system after a strike on a strategic node or a random failure of a node. For a self-organizing topology with numerous nodes, it is necessary to have a local fault tolerance measure instead of collecting information of the entire network to adjust the topology locally when needed. The local clustering coefficient determines the degree of the connectedness of the node's neighbors. The correlation between the clustering coefficient and fault tolerance is an open research problem. In this paper, we propose the clustering coefficient as a local metric for fault tolerance, in particular for wireless sensor networks. We describe how to increase the clustering coefficient by (a) exclusively adding and (b) exclusively removing links to a wireless sensor network topology. Simulation results indicate that the clustering coefficient is correlated to the fault tolerance of the system.

In this paper, cross-corpora evaluations are used to analyze the bias of spontaneous facial expression databases. Local binary pattern, Gabor, eigenface and fisherface features are extracted and applied to the four spontaneous expression databases: USTC-NVIE, VAM, Belfast Naturalistic and SEMAINE to recognize arousal (high/low) and valance (positive/negative) respectively. Experimental results indicate that there exists bias among different spontaneous expression databases. The emotion-induction methods, the variety of subjects and the quantity of raters may have caused such a bias.

Predictive pre-fetcher, which predicts future data access events and loads the data before users requests, has been widely studied, especially in file systems or web contents servers, to reduce data load latency. Especially in scientific data visualization, pre-fetching can reduce the IO waiting time. In order to increase the accuracy, we apply a data mining technique to extract hidden information. More specifically, we apply a data mining technique for discovering the hidden contexts in data access patterns and make prediction based on the inferred context to boost the accuracy. In particular, we performed Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis (PLSA), a mixture model based algorithm popular in the text mining area, to mine hidden contexts from the collected user access patterns and, then, we run a predictor within the discovered context. We further improve PLSA by applying the Deterministic Annealing (DA) method to overcome the local optimum problem. In this paper we demonstrate how we can apply PLSA and DA optimization to mine hidden contexts from users data access patterns and improve predictive pre-fetcher performance.

Photonic crystals realized in LiNbO3 have a great potential to reduce the size and increase the functionality of integrated optical devices. In order to accomplish these aims, fabrication know-how must be mastered yet it remains relatively uncharted. In this work we report the fabrication and optical characterization of photonic crystal structures in annealed proton exchanged (APE) LiNbO3 waveguides. In our work, channel waveguides were fabricated by photolithography patterning followed by immersing LiNbO 3 wafers in molten benzoic acid at 235°C for 5 h. The thickness and the composition profiles of the APE waveguides were measured using the secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) method. The experimental characterization of the photonic crystal waveguides was performed and a photonic stop band with good sharpness can be observed from the transmission spectra. © 2012 IEEE.

Real time multimedia content transmission on the Internet is essential for the most current applications such as voice over IP, video conference, games and web TV. The most popular Internet transport protocols - TCP and UDP - do not suffice when one needs to transmit data from these applications. As a consequence, IETF has been working in new transport protocols that enhance the quality of these multimedia applications. Among all these protocols, DCCP (RFC 4340) is the most effective for multimedia content transmission on the Internet. However, DCCP is not effective in scenarios with many receivers nodes and one sender node. Therefore, this work proposes the Mult(Uni)cast DCCP, a DCCP variant that enables the multimedia data transmission from one to various nodes and supporting non-reliable traffic congestion control. The MU-DCCP uses either multicast or unicast flows according to the network support and data sharing among receiver nodes. The obtained results show that the usage of the MU-DCCP significantly reduces the data congestion in the network while improving the application scalability in terms of the number of receiver nodes.

data aggregation, as a primitive communication task in wireless networks, can reduce the communication complexity. However, in-network aggregation usually brings an unavoidable security defect. Some malicious nodes may control a large percentage of the whole network data and compel the network misbehave in an arbitrary manner. Thus, locating the malicious nodes to prevent them from further disaster is a practical challenge for data aggregation schemes. Based on the grouping and localization techniques, we propose a novel integrated protocol to locate malicious nodes. The proposed protocol does not rely on any special hardware and requests only incomplete information of the network from the security schemes. We also conduct simulation study to evaluate the proposed protocol.

A graph-theoretic analysis of state inference for a class of network synchronization (or diffusive) processes is pursued. Precisely, estimation is studied for a nonrandom initial condition of a canonical synchronization dynamic defined on a graph, from noisy observations at a single network node. By characterizing the maximum-likelihood estimation of the initial condition and the associated Cramer-Rao bound, graph properties are identified (e.g., symmetries, interconnection strengths, spectral measures) that determine (1) whether or not estimation is possible and (2) the quality of the estimate. © 2013 Complex Systems Publications, Inc.
