Spectral regression is a newly proposed method for dimensionality reduction, which is also based on graph embedding but less time and space consuming. However, like many methods based on neighborhood graphs, it still focuses on local manifold smoothness and ignores discriminative information among samples. In this paper, instead of making use of a neighborhood graph, we take advantage of a global graph defined by the coefficients of sparse representation and propose a method called Sparse Representation based Spectral Regression (SpSR) on this graph. This graph is data-driven, discriminative and robust to noise features. Experimental results on facial images feature extraction tasks demonstrate these advantages.

Usually a light beam pushes a particle when the photons act upon it. We investigate the optical forces by nonparaxial gradientless beams and find that the forces can drag suitable particles all the way towards the light source. The major criterion of realizing the backward dragging force is the strong nonparaxiality of the light beam, which contributes to the pulling force owing to momentum conservation. The nonparaxiality of the Bessel beam can be manipulated to possess a dragging force along both the radial longitudinal directions, i.e., a “tractor beam” with stable trajectories is achieved.

An appropriate and understandable data visualization is a key feature for the usability of a data mining system. The proper visualization methods for data exploration increase the whole acceptability of the system and proper selection of the further data processing tasks. This paper introduces a framework for visualization of results as it is being implemented in the European project ADMIRE (Advanced data Mining and Integration Research for Europe). The feasibility of the framework for distributed systems is presented on a real data mining and integration scenario. We describe two visualization components fully implemented and deployed in the distributed environment. The first one is implemented on the ADMIRE Gateway and is processing input data and producing information required by the second component residing on the ADMIRE Workbench, which provides the actual graphical visualization. The ADMIRE Gateway and Workbench are two basic components of the distributed ADMIRE Platform.

Collection, processing, storage and maintenance of samples to facilitate long-term cohort studies in biobanks, requires a system to manage samples in an effective way to prevent sample mix up and loss. Sample identification and tracking system aims to reserve data on the samples at all the times, hence RFID technology is employed. This technology allows information to be stored on the tags attached to tubes containing samples. A system is proposed, designed and prototype in the Prostate Cancer Research Consortium biobank.

Biomedical Engineers should be prepared to adapt to existing or forecasted needs. There is a strong pressure on education, training and life long learning programs to continuously adapt their objectives in order to face new requirements and challenges. The main objective of the TEMPUS IV, CRH-BME project is to update existing curricula in the field of Biomedical engineering (BME) in order to meet recent and future developments in the area, address new emerging inter-disciplinary domains that appear as a result of the R&D progress and respond to the BME job market demands. The first step is to extensively review the curricula in the BME education field. In this paper, a proposal for a generic curriculum in the BME education is presented, in order to meet recent and future developments and respond to the demands of the BME job market. Adoption of the core program structure will facilitate harmonization of studies as well as student and staff exchange across Europe, thus promoting the European Higher Education Area.

An aggregate signature scheme allows a public algorithm to aggregate n signatures of n distinct messages from n signers into a single signature. By validating the single resulting signature, one can be convinced that the messages have been endorsed by all the signers. Certificateless aggregate signatures allow the signers to authenticate messages without suffering from the complex certificate management in the traditional public key cryptography or the key escrow problem in identity-based cryptography. In this paper, we present a new efficient certificate less aggregate signature scheme. Compared with up-to-date certificate less aggregate signatures, our scheme is equipped with a number of attracting features: (1) it is shown to be secure under the standard computational Diffie-Hellman assumption in the random oracle model, (2) the security is proven in the strongest security model so far, (3) the signers do not need to be synchronized, and (4) its performance is comparable to the most efficient up-to-date schemes. These features are desirable in a mobile networking and computing environment where the storage/computation capacity of the end devices are limited, and due to the wireless connection and distributed feature, the computing devices are easy to be attacked and hard to be synchronized.

Every day, a huge amount of video data is generated for different purposes and applications. Fast and accurate algorithms for efficient video search and retrieval are therefore essential. The interesting properties of sparse representation and the new sampling theory named Compressive Sensing (CS) constitute the core of the new approach to video representation and retrieval we are presenting in this paper. Once the representation (where sparsity is expected) has been chosen and the observations have been taken, the proposed approach utilizes Bayesian modeling and inference to tackle the retrieval problem. In order to speed up the inference process the use of Principal Components Analysis (PCA) to provide an alternative representation of the frames is analyzed. Experimental results validate the proposed approach whose robustness against noise is also examined.

We present a black-box attack that is able to fully recover the secret values shared between entities involved in an authentication protocol. First, we explain how this black-box technique can be successfully applied against the class of protocols commonly known as ultralightweight protocols. Then, the effectiveness of this attack is shown by successfully cryptanalyzing the David-Prasad ultralightweight protocol [1], which is one of the most recent proposals in this research area. We show how we can recover the secret static identifier ID - the most valuable information which the protocol is designed to conceal - after eavesdropping only one protocol session. Our attack compares favorably to previous attacks against this protocol, and constitutes an interesting alternative for the very realistic scenario of attackers having access only to messages exchanged during a single authentication session. We also show how this disclosure attack can be used to mount a very powerful traceability attack that also improves on previous results. © 2011 The authors and IOS Press. All rights reserved.

Massively parallel computations consist of a mixture of computation, communication, and I/O. Of these three components, implementing an effective parallel I/O solution has often been overlooked by application scientists and has typically been added to large scale simulations only when existing serial techniques have failed. As scientists' teams scaled their codes to run on hundreds of processors, it was common to call on an I/O expert to implement a set of more scalable I/O routines. These routines were easily separated from the calculations and communication, and in many cases, an I/O kernel was derived from the application which could be used for testing I/O performance independent of the application. These I/O kernels developed a life of their own used as a broad measure for comparing different I/O techniques. Unfortunately, as years passed and computation and communication changes required changes to the I/O, the separate I/O kernel used for benchmarking remained static, no longer providing an accurate indicator of the I/O performance of the simulation, and making I/O research less relevant for the application scientists. In this paper we describe a new approach to this problem where I/O kernels are replaced with skeletal I/O applications that are automatically generated from an abstract set of simulation I/O parameters. We realize this abstraction by leveraging the ADIOS [1] middleware's XML I/O specification with additional runtime parameters. Skeletal applications offer all of the benefits of I/O kernels including allowing I/O optimizations to focus on useful I/O patterns. Moreover, since they are automatically generated, it is easy to produce an updated I/O skeleton whenever the simulation's I/O changes. In this paper we analyze the performance of automatically generated I/O skeletal applications for the S3D and GTS codes. We show that these skeletal applications achieve performance comparable to that of the production applications. We wrap up the paper with
