A Comprehensive Survey of Floor Plan Image Analysis and Related Applications

This paper presents an in-depth exploration of architectural floor plan analysis through computational statistics, addressing the layout optimization and performance enhancement of buildings. Floor plans, which include elements like windows, walls, doors, and appliances, are pivotal for collaboration among architects, engineers, and clients, allowing for tailored designs based on client preferences. The study acknowledges the complexity and diversity of floor plans, which pose significant challenges for both human and machine recognition. Our research provides a thorough review of the evolution and current state of floor plan analysis, as well as a projection into its future. We systematically classify existing models into nine categories-dimensional, room-based, structural, retrieval, object-detection, graph, map, residential, and area-based-and assess them against criteria such as application domain, dataset, publication year, and reported performance metrics. The paper also discusses the practical implications of computational floor plan analysis, such as space optimization, energy efficiency, accessibility, safety, and comfort in the built environment. By processing and recognizing floor plan images, we can gain valuable insights and propose solutions to these issues. Our comprehensive review not only charts the progress in the field but also highlights the unresolved challenges and potential directions for future research. Speech separation aims to equip machines with the human ability of selective listening, i.e. to focus attention on specific information in spoken communication. Studies have shown that the language spoken in a cocktail party scenario matters. While the development of speech separation models can leverage extensive databases, for the majority of languages only very limited data is available. This work presents the very first study on speech separation for low-resource languages. We choose blind source separation as the task to be studied and analyze three strategies to overcome the data scarcity of two low-resource languages from the GlobalPhoneMS2 database. We show that data from other languages can be used to develop models that work for low-resource languages. Finetuning additionally boosts the performance, and training on multiple languages increases both performance and robustness. We show that dynamic mixing in the development helps to find a trade-off between performance and development time. © 2025 IEEE.

RIS-Assisted Localization: A Novel Conditional Sample Mean Approach without CSI

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been recognized as a promising solution for enhancing localization accuracy. Traditional RIS-based localization methods typically rely on prior channel knowledge, beam scanning, and pilot-based assistance. These approaches often result in substantial energy and computational overhead, and require real-time coordination between the base station (BS) and the RIS. In this work, we propose a novel multiple RISs aided localization approach to address these challenges. The proposed method first estimates the angle-of-directions (AoDs) between the RISs and the user using the conditional sample mean approach, and then uses the estimated multiple AoD pairs to determine the user’s position. This approach only requires measuring the received signal strength at the BS for a set of randomly generated phase shifts across all RISs, thereby eliminating the need for real-time RIS phase shift design or user-to-BS pilot transmissions. Numerical results show that the proposed localization approach improves localization accuracy while significantly reducing energy and signaling overhead compared to conventional methods. Climate change has accelerated the dynamics of cryospheric and oceanographic systems, leading to rising sea levels, increased ice melt, and significant shifts in polar regions. Monitoring these changes is crucial, yet traditional observational methods are often impractical in remote, harsh environments. This study presents a novel approach to monitoring oceanographic and cryospheric changes induced by climate dynamics, using a cascaded long short-term memory (LSTM) and recurrent neural network (RNN) model with ICESat and supplementary remote sensing data. The model leverages ICESat’s high-resolution laser altimetry for precise measurements of ice thickness and ice sheet elevation, combined with data from MODIS, Sentinel-1, and CryoSat-2 for comprehensive insights. Our results indicate that the cascaded LSTM-RNN model achieves high predictive accuracy, with root mean square error (RMSE) values as low as 0.08 m for ice thickness and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.05 m. Additionally, it attains a correlation coefficient of 0.96, significantly outperforming other models like standalone LSTM (RMSE 0.12 m, MAE 0.09 m) and CNN-LSTM hybrid (RMSE 0.10 m, MAE 0.08 m). This model captures both seasonal and long-term trends in ice dynamics, highlighting its utility for robust climate monitoring. The successful integration of ICESat and other remote sensing data demonstrates the potential for advanced machine learning techniques to enhance predictions of polar and oceanographic changes, supporting climate adaptation efforts. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Contract-Inspired Contest Theory for Controllable Image Generation in Mobile Edge Metaverse

The rapid advancement of immersive technologies has propelled the development of the Metaverse, where the convergence of virtual and physical realities necessitates the generation of high-quality, photorealistic images to enhance user experience. However, generating these images, especially through Generative Diffusion Models (GDMs), in mobile edge computing environments presents significant challenges due to the limited computing resources of edge devices and the dynamic nature of wireless networks. This paper proposes a novel framework that integrates contract-inspired contest theory, Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), and GDMs to optimize image generation in these resource-constrained environments. The framework addresses the critical challenges of resource allocation and semantic data transmission quality by incentivizing edge devices to efficiently transmit high-quality semantic data, which is essential for creating realistic and immersive images. The use of contest and contract theory ensures that edge devices are motivated to allocate resources effectively, while DRL dynamically adjusts to network conditions, optimizing the overall image generation process. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach not only improves the quality of generated images but also achieves superior convergence speed and stability compared to traditional methods. This makes the framework particularly effective for optimizing complex resource allocation tasks in mobile edge Metaverse applications, offering enhanced performance and efficiency in creating immersive virtual environments. © 2025, CC BY.

This paper introduces a recursive parallel dynamic mode decomposition (RPDMD) scheme tailored for multidimensional harmonic retrieval (MHR), specifically applied to MIMO wireless channel sounding. The RPDMD algorithm is devised to address the complexities inherent in multidimensional scenarios, leveraging the dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) framework within a recursive parallel structure. Initially, the observed tensorial multidimensional harmonic data is transformed into a two-dimensional matrix format along the r-th dimension. Subsequently, DMD dissects this matrix data into eigenvalues and their associated modes. The real and imaginary components of the DMD eigenvalues yield damping factors and frequencies in the r-th dimension, respectively. Furthermore, recursive DMD is employed to scrutinize each mode independently for parameter retrieval across the remaining dimensions, enabling parallel analysis. Ultimately, this high-dimensional correlated decomposition scheme delivers paired damping factors and frequencies for all tones. Notably, the proposed approach can ascertain the number of tones in undamped sinusoidal signals, making it particularly suitable for MHR even without prior knowledge of the source count. Numerical experiments demonstrate the accuracy and robustness of the RPDMD scheme, with comparative analysis indicating that RPDMD outperforms similar methods, achieving optimal results with minimal mean square error in high signal-to-noise ratio scenarios. This work presents an effective data-driven solution for the MHR problem in MIMO wireless channel sounding. © 2014 IEEE.

The research presents a new efficient machine learning method to classify brain tumors because this task remains vital in fighting the high incidence of brain cancers. The proposed approach unites all its operations including image segmentation with feature extraction and classification into a single processing system. This study uses Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Adaptive PSO (APSO) methodologies to optimize Locally Linear Radial Basis Function Neural Network (LLRBFNN) resulting in PSO-LLRBFNN and APSO-LLRBFNN model implementations. The research examined the optimized APSO-LLRBFNN models against Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Least Mean Squares (LMS) based LLRBFNN classifier methods. Results from experiments show that APSO-LLRBFNN gives superior outcomes with 98.93% accuracy and takes 12.23 seconds for execution, which surpasses currently available methods. © 2025 IEEE.

This study proposes a hybrid method to multi dialect speech recognition using the transfer learning with transformer-based architecture. The primary objective of this method is to enhance the automatic speech recognition (ASR) across the different dialectal variations of specific language. The transfer learning methods are utilized to modify the base model that was trained on high resource language to manage the multiple dialects with limited labelled data for each dialect. This is achieved by using pre trained transformer methods such as Wav2Vec2.0 and Whisper. An approach which employs dialect specific embeddings is presented. It enables the method to capture data and differentiate between prosodic elements and phonetic that are distinctive to a variety of dialects. data augmentation technique are utilized in order to overcome the limited availability of labelled data for low resource dialects. These methods are utilized to increase the efficiency of training set and enhance the robustness of the method. Evaluation of the method is carried out using multi dialect speech datasets which include Arabic MGB-3 and common voice. These datasets represent a variety of dialects that are spoken in various linguistic regions. The result of this study indicates that the transformer-based method is effective in managing difficulties of dialectal variances while the reliability is reduced on different datasets. Different real-world applications are provided by the proposed method for improving voice enabled applications. Furthermore, this method leads the way for the development of ASR method that are more accurate and independent in locations that have a significant linguistic variation. © 2025 IEEE.

This paper exploits an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle assisted Mobile Edge computing (UAV-MEC) system to meet the computation demand of User Equipments (UEs). However, in conventional UAV-MEC architecture, a UAV is dedicated only to one single service, which will inevitably limit overall system performance. To address the above issue of the conventional UAVMEC architecture, we propose a hybrid UAV-MEC model. In this model, a UAV is treated as an agent to provide either relay or computing services. Moreover, we propose an MEC Multiple Agent UAV Trajectory and User Association Policy Gradient (MEC-MAUTUA-PG) algorithm to optimize offloading strategies of the UEs as well as the trajectory design of UAV. We show the superiority of the proposed algorithm in terms of delay and the safety of trajectory design of UAV in the environment. © 1967-2012 IEEE.
