This paper addresses the use of a VoIP communication service running on a Wi-Fi-based network in the Peruvian Rainforest to enable a cooperative network among producers, buyers and transporters of agricultural products. As a result, uncertainties in a geographically isolated imperfect agricultural market will be reduced, leading to a more efficient use of scarce resources, an increase of farmers' incomes, and more competitive prices of products in urban markets. This project involves enabling access to agricultural product information from buyers in urban areas to farmers in rural villages, as well as transporters and middlemen. The deployment of the Wi-Fi network began in 2007. This network, a 445 km long Wi-Fi Long Distance-based network, was deployed by the Rural Telecommunications Research Group and the Spanish-Americas Health Link (EHAS) Foundation to support telemedicine programs. The deployed network and excess bandwidth makes it possible to continue promoting development in this area by allowing coexistence with other services such as the proposed VoIP enabled cooperative network for commerce of agricultural products. To achieve this end, challenges include: 1) designing an appropriate framework to enable the cooperative network among participants, 2) designing appropriate friendly end-user technology for first-time technology users, and 3) designing an appropriate business model which ensures a sustainable growing service. Using the VoIP service as a tool to enable affordable communication for this agricultural initiative will allow interaction among producers, buyers and transporters located hundreds of kilometers apart and open unprecedented choices for them to offer and trade products, generating innovative practices tailored for the local conditions.

We analyze a cognitive radio network where the primary users (PUs) and cognitive radio (CR) devices are distributed over the two-dimensional plane according to two independent homogeneous Poisson processes. Any CR that lies within the detection region of some PU switches to a different channel in order to prevent causing harmful interference at the PU. Using the concepts of stochastic geometry, we study the characteristics of the interference caused by the PUs and the CRs to a given PU. Further, these results are used to obtain tight upper and lower bounds for the success probability at the PU;defined as the probability that the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) is beyond a certain operating threshold. © 2012 IFIP.

Dielectric metamaterials offer a potential low-loss alternative to plasmonic metamaterials at optical frequencies. However, demonstrations of dielectric metamaterials have so far been limited to microwave and mid-infrared frequencies. In this work, we outline the development of purely dielectric zero-index metamaterials operating at optical frequencies. The metamaterial, formed from silicon rods, exhibits impedance matching with air, resulting in unity transmission at the zero-index point. Design and experimental realization of the metamaterials is presented. The metamaterials can potentially be used for a number of applications including compact lens systems, directional emitters, and transformation optics devices. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we consider the downlink signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) analysis in a heterogeneous cellular network with K tiers. Each tier is characterized by a base-station (BS) arrangement according to a homogeneous Poisson point process with certain BS density, transmission power, random shadow fading factors with arbitrary distribution, arbitrary path-loss exponent and a certain bias towards admitting the mobile-station (MS). The MS associates with the BS that has the maximum instantaneous biased received power under the open access cell association scheme. For such a general setting, we provide an analytical characterization of the coverage probability at the MS.

We study the downlink signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) in a multi-tier heterogeneous cellular network under the open and closed access schemes. Each tier is characterized by a base-station (BS) arrangement according to a homogeneous Poisson point process with certain density, constant transmission power and random shadow fading factors with arbitrary distribution. The mobile-station (MS) communicates with the BS that has the maximum instantaneous received power among those to which it is allowed access. The chosen BS provides coverage to the MS if the SIR is above a certain threshold determined by the BS's tier. The coverage probability and average rate expressions are derived for the open access scheme for any arbitrary SIR threshold assigned for each tier, and for the closed access scheme when the SIR thresholds are greater than one.
