In recent years, variational quantum algorithms (VQAs) have gained significant attention due to their adaptability and efficiency on near-term quantum hardware. They have shown potential in a variety of tasks, including linear algebra, search problems, Gibbs and ground state preparation. Nevertheless, the presence of noise in current day quantum hardware, severely limits their performance. In this work, we introduce dissipative variational quantum algorithms (D-VQAs) by incorporating dissipative operations, such as qubit RESET and stochastic gates, as an intrinsic part of a variational quantum circuit. We argue that such dissipative variational algorithms posses some natural resilience to dissipative noise. We demonstrate how such algorithms can prepare Gibbs states over a wide range of quantum many-body Hamiltonians and temperatures, while significantly reducing errors due to both coherent and non-coherent noise. An additional advantage of our approach is that no ancilla qubits are need. Our results highlight the potential of D-VQAs to enhance the robustness and accuracy of variational quantum computations on NISQ devices. © 2024, CC BY.

This paper describes the participation of the DUTH-ATHENA team of Democritus University of Thrace and Athena Research Center in the eRisk 2021 task, which focuses on measuring the level of depression based on Reddit users' posts. We address this task using both feature-based and fine-tuning strategies for applying BERT-based representations. In the feature-based approaches, we examine the possibilities of a SBERT model based on RoBERTa, pre-trained on Natural language Inference (NLI) data and fine-tuned on STSb dataset to leverage transfer learning to depression-level estimation, and we achieve promising results. One of our runs ranks first in Average Hit Rate (AHR), while the others rank among the best four in the other evaluation metrics. Also, for the fine-tuning approach, we propose two predictive models that are built upon RoBERTa, which provide directions for future optimizations. © 2021 Copyright for this paper by its authors. This paper examines the impact of building zoning on demand flexibility potentials. The building thermal dynamic response is modeled by using the state-space representation method. The comfort preference of the occupants is defined by statistical analysis of set-point temperature patterns. The created models are used to study energy flexibility through a coordinated energy management problem by means of the Stackelberg game strategy. The zoning influence on flexibility potentials is analyzed by applying this procedure to a set of houses in Quebec based on two specific scenarios accounting for single and multi-zones. The flexibility potential is evaluated by comparing overall demand peak reduction and heating consumption under each scenario signifying passive heating storage capacity of buildings. The single-zone scenario performs better at harvesting energy flexibility through reducing the peak load by 33%. The results demonstrate that the building zoning definition can lead to conditions under which the demand flexibility can change. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Rapid advancements in artificial intelligence have given rise to transformative models, profoundly impacting our lives. These models demand massive volumes of data to operate effectively, exacerbating the data-transfer bottleneck inherent in the conventional von-Neumann architecture. Compute-in-memory (CIM), a novel computing paradigm, tackles these issues by seam-lessly embedding in-memory search functions, thereby obviating the need for data transfers. However, existing non-volatile memory (NVM)-based accelerators are application specific. During the similarity based associative search operation, they only support a single, specific distance metric, such as Hamming, Manhattan, or Euclidean distance in measuring the query against the stored data, calling for reconfigurable in-memory solutions adaptable to various applications. To overcome such a limitation, in this paper, we present FeReX, a reconfigurable associative memory (AM) that accommodates various distance metrics including Hamming, Manhattan, and Euclidean distances. Leveraging multi-bit ferroelectric field-effect transistors (FeFETs) as the proxy and a hardware-software co-design approach, we introduce a constrained satisfaction problem (CSP)-based method to automate AM search input voltage and stored voltage configurations for different distance based search functions. Device-circuit co-simulations first validate the effectiveness of the proposed FeReX methodology for reconfigurable search distance functions. Then, we benchmark FeReX in the context of k-nearest neighbor (KNN) and hyperdimensional computing (HDC), which highlights the robustness of FeReX and demonstrates up to 250× speedup and 10 4 energy savings compared with GPU.

Gait asymmetry, a consequence of various neurological or physical conditions such as aging and stroke, detrimentally impacts bipedal locomotion, causing biomechanical alterations, increasing the risk of falls and reducing quality of life. Addressing this critical issue, this paper introduces a novel diagnostic method for gait symmetry analysis through the use of an assistive robotic Smart Walker equipped with an innovative asymmetry detection scheme. This method analyzes sensor measurements capturing the interaction torque between user and walker. By applying a seasonal-trend decomposition tool, we isolate gait-specific patterns within these data, allowing for the estimation of stride durations and calculation of a symmetry index. Through experiments involving 5 experimenters, we demonstrate the Smart Walker’s capability in detecting and quantifying gait asymmetry by achieving an accuracy of 84.9% in identifying asymmetric cases in a controlled testing environment. Further analysis explores the classification of these asymmetries based on their underlying causes, providing valuable insights for gait assessment. The results underscore the potential of the device as a precise, ready-to-use monitoring tool for personalized rehabilitation, facilitating targeted interventions for enhanced patient outcomes.

In ground-based observations of the Sun,solar images are often affected by appearance of thin clouds,which contaminate the images and affect the scientific results from data *** this paper,the improved Pixel to Pixel Network(Pix2Pix)network is used to convert polluted images to clear images to remove the cloud shadow in the solar *** adding attention module to the model,the hidden layer of Pix2Pix model can infer the attention map of the input feature vector according to the input feature *** then,the attention map is multiplied by the input feature map to give different weights to the hidden features in the feature map,adaptively refine the input feature map to make the model pay attention to important feature information and achieve better recovery *** order to further enhance the model’s ability to recover detailed features,perceptual loss is added to the loss *** model was tested on the full disk H-alpha images datasets provided by Huairou Solar Observing Station,National Astronomical *** experimental results show that the model can effectively remove the influence of thin clouds on the picture and restore the details of solar *** peak signal-to-noise ratio(PSNR)reaches 27.3012 and the learned perceptual image patch similarity(LPIPS)reaches 0.330,which is superior to the existed dehaze algorithms.

The paper is devoted to study of the influence of rolling modes on the performance of powerful interconnected electric drives of a hot rolling mill under the action of an electromagnetic coupling circuit between the electric drives of the roughing and finishing groups. The action of the electromagnetic coupling circuit manifests itself in the form of the influence of impact loads of synchronous electric drives on the angular velocity of direct current electric drives of the finishing group of the mill. The parameters of the electromagnetic coupling circuit are determined by the power supply scheme and equipment parameters. Values of impact loads applied to a synchronous motor depend on the rolling process parameters, in particular, the chemical composition of the rolled steel and the temperature of the ingot. The paper presents the results of calculating the rolling power for various rolling mode parameters. Using mathematical modeling in Simulink, numerical estimates of the influence of rolling modes on the magnitude of the voltage drop in the power supply unit and the drop in the angular velocity of the electric drive of the finishing group were obtained on the example of a wide-strip hot rolling mill 1700 of ArcelorMittal Temirtau JSC. © 2023 IEEE.

Culture conditions in a photobioreactor on a microalgae plant are essential for production rates, and the pH value is one of the critical variables for a harmonizing process. However, the biological nature of microalgae growth represents a complex reaction that is arduous to model and control. This work proposes an approach of the application of adaptive identification and predictive control to regulate the pH in a photobioreactor in a microalgae production system. The proposed approach is composed of two main stages: identification and control. The identification is performed by a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model, which will be learned with an offline strategy, by Fuzzy c-means, for the antecedent part, and by the Least Squares Method (LSM), for the consequent part. Then, the model is updated with an online method, the Recursive Least Squares with Adaptive Directional Forgetting (RLS-ADF) factor algorithm. The control scheme is based on a Generalized Predictive Control approach, which is a Model Predictive Controller (MPC), with the adaptive T-S fuzzy model designed in the identification stage. In this way, the model parameters from GPC are online adapted by RLS-ADF. To validate the control structure, the proposed approach was tested by using an estimated model from real data of a microalgae production process.
