Large pretrained language models generate fluent text but are notoriously hard to controllably sample from. In this work, we study constrained sampling from such language models: generating text that satisfies user-defined constraints, while maintaining fluency and model's performance in a downstream task. We propose MUCOLA-a sampling procedure that combines the log-likelihood of the language model with arbitrary (differentiable) constraints in a single energy function, and then generates samples in a non-autoregressive manner. Specifically, it initializes the entire output sequence with noise and follows a Markov chain defined by Langevin Dynamics using the gradients of the energy function. We evaluate MUCOLA on text generation with soft and hard constraints as well as their combinations obtaining significant improvements over competitive baselines for toxicity avoidance, sentiment control, and keyword-guided generation. © 2022 Association for Computational Linguistics.

We present a large multi-signer video corpus for the Greek Sign language (GSL), suitable for the development and evaluation of GSL recognition algorithms. The database has been collected as part of the “SL-ReDu” project that focuses on the education use-case of systematic teaching of GSL as a second language (L2). The project aims to assist this process by allowing self-monitoring and objective assessment of GSL learners’ productions through the use of recognition technology, thus requiring suitable data resources relevant to the aforementioned use-case. To this end, we present the SL-ReDu GSL corpus, an extensive RGB+D video collection of 21 informants with a duration of 36 hours, recorded under studio conditions, consisting of: (i) isolated signs; (ii) continuous signing (annotated at the sentence level); and (iii) fingerspelling of words. We provide a detailed description of the design and acquisition methods used to develop it, along with corpus statistics and a comparison to existing sign language datasets. The SL-ReDu GSL corpus, as well as proposed frameworks for recognition experiments on it, are publicly available at https://***/corpus.

The rapid advancements in digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), extended reality (XR), and the internet of things (IoT) have revolutionized various sectors, including education. Metaverse, a convergence of these transformative technologies, offers immersive, personalized, and interactive experiences, making it a powerful tool in modern education. This paper explores the Metaverse's role in enhancing education by examining its architecture, types, and components while addressing practical implementation challenges, and follows a structured review protocol to ensure a comprehensive analysis, including systematic research, paper selection, and a critical examination of relevant studies from reputable databases such as Google Scholar, IEEE Xplore, ACM, and Springer. The research objectives focus on evaluating the Metaverse's applications in education, ethical challenges, technological limitations, and potential strategies for sustainable integration. Key research questions address the need for Metaverse adoption in education, its benefits, challenges, and future directions. The Metaverse cultivates essential skills such as empathy, ethical reasoning, and effective communication by providing students with customized, immersive learning environments. However, ethical concerns, technical barriers, and infrastructural costs pose significant obstacles to its widespread adoption. It discusses strategies to solve these barriers, explores applications in distance learning, and proposes future research directions to create scalable and sustainable educational models in the Metaverse. Branchformer: Parallel MLP-Attention Architectures to Capture Local and Global Context for Speech Recognition and Understanding

Conformer has proven to be effective in many speech processing tasks. It combines the benefits of extracting local dependencies using convolutions and global dependencies using self-attention. Inspired by this, we propose a more flexible, interpretable and customizable encoder alternative, Branchformer, with parallel branches for modeling various ranged dependencies in end-to-end speech processing. In each encoder layer, one branch employs self-attention or its variant to capture long-range dependencies, while the other branch utilizes an MLP module with convolutional gating (cgMLP) to extract local relationships. We conduct experiments on several speech recognition and spoken language understanding benchmarks. Results show that our model outperforms both Transformer and cgMLP. It also matches with or outperforms state-of-the-art results achieved by Conformer. Furthermore, we show various strategies to reduce computation thanks to the two-branch architecture, including the ability to have variable inference complexity in a single trained model. The weights learned for merging branches indicate how local and global dependencies are utilized in different layers, which benefits model designing. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. The process of installing electrical cables physically in a specific location inside a library block is widely considered as an electrically equipped place. It involves planning the particular route, securing the cables and ensuring technical support and proper protection. In a library block, the process of installing electrical wires can provide power and electrical connectivity to various devices and systems. An insulation resistance tests were conducted a high voltage flow to the insulation and measures the resistance ratio to the actual current flow after cable installation. Testing of measurements given in table. Algorithms help to identify all kinds of weaknesses and faults in the insulation that could lead to any electrical leakages or short circuits. The insulation resistance test is primarily important to ensure the safety and reliability of electrical systems. It is particularly needed in an environment like a library. Libraries are filled with books made of papers that are easily flammable in nature. So, we should give top priority to electrical safety in libraries. Minimum constrained non-linear minimization solver is used to identify the iteration levels and verified with best function values and first order optimality values. This paper shows performance analysis of Insulation resistance test and Cable laying installation in a Library block.

The need to achieve carbon neutrality has boosted the mass adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). However, the electric mobility demand uncertainty can create several technical issues in the power system management and operation. This paper presents a computational implementation based on different probability distributions for creating EVs charging profiles. Initially, aspects related to trips, EVs characteristics, and user profiles are considered as inputs to be used to define the EVs profiles. Then, in the second step, the processing of the inputs aiming to obtain information such as trips during the day, types of EVs, user profiles, trips by users, trip duration, and energy needs are considered. The proposed case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the computational implementation since the EV profiles created taking into account different numbers of EVs show reliable information related to the EV charging profiles and charging station usage for different days of simulation (weekdays and a weekend). © 2023 European Union.

The need for aerial platforms capable of sustained operation is critical in fields such as surveillance, agricultural monitoring, disaster response, and temporary telecommunication systems. Traditional unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are hampered by limited battery capacity and inefficient energy utilization. This paper introduces an autonomous vertical flight drone tethered to a ground-based platform, which overcomes these limitations. The drone is designed to optimize its position and energy usage by harnessing wind currents, functioning similarly to a kite when conditions permit. This is enabled by a custom-designed autopilot system comprising both hardware and software tailored for this application. We detail the model identification process for three vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) drone systems, employing authentic data that measures lateral positional errors from the tether. Robust mixed sensitivity controllers are developed and implemented. The effectiveness of these controllers is validated through simulations showing their capability to handle uncertainties. Furthermore, the practical application and robust performance of the system are confirmed by a real-world case study, highlighting its potential in real operational environments. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

This paper deals with an intelligent decision-making strategy of energy management for a smart grid within an element storage in order to reduce the system cost and improve its reliability. Indeed, the integration of distributed energy storage devices allows the customers to store energy and reuse at a later time or delayed some appliances operation according to a time-varying price signal. The adopted strategy is based on an artificial intelligence control algorithm 'fuzzy logic'. The main objective is to determine the appropriate source (grid or battery) used for meeting the consumer. The decision solution shows the system reliability where the switches are synchronized. Switches draw electricity from the grid for both load and battery when price is low and in contrary when electricity price is high, we find a variation's price correspondance with the switch drawing electricity from the battery. The obtained results are verified carrying out Matlab simulation using real data such as the electricity price (Price (t)) and the battery state of charge (SOC (t)). © 2023 IEEE.

The mass adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has been accelerated by the imperative need for energy transition. Nevertheless, the continuous growth of EVs can bring new challenges to electric power systems, including voltage and congestion constraints in low-voltage and medium-voltage networks. To anticipate these constraints, it is necessary to develop algorithms for predicting EV charging behavior. Therefore, this paper proposes a computational implementation based on Random Forest for accurately forecasting EV power consumption. The process begins with data collection, followed by pre-processing to clean and prepare the data. Next, feature engineering and feature selection steps are applied to create and select the inputs (features) for the forecasting process. Finally, forecast and validation steps are implemented. The case study analyzed utilizes real data from the charging station at Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed forecasting method, achieving a Mean Absolute Error of 203.23W and a Normalized Root Mean Square Error of 3.44% for one year of training and one month of forecasting.

To establish a free-space underwater optical connection between a transmitter and a receiver suitable for operation in the single photon regime, techniques must be developed to compensate for: a) rotational and translational motions of both the transmitter and the receiver, b) their vibrations, and c) turbulence-induced deformations of the wavefront leading to beam wander, scintillation and beam spreading. The purpose of this work is to present and discuss experimental results obtained using a pseudo phase-conjugated mirror placed at the end of an underwater optical path disturbed by artificially induced turbulence. This configuration emulates a scenario whereby a modulated retroreflector is used to transmit the data back to the laser transmitter. The measurements obtained with the proposed retracing optical connection are found to be promising and pave the way for the use of this technique for quantum communications. © 2024 SPIE.
