Photovoltaic (PV) generation systems that are partially shaded have a non-linear operating curve that is highly dependent on temperature and irradiance conditions. Shading from surrounding objects like clouds, trees, and buildings creates partial shading conditions (PSC) that can cause hot spot formation on PV panels. To prevent this, bypass diodes are installed in parallel across each panel, resulting in a global maximum power point (GMPP) and multiple local maximum power points (LMPPs) on the power-voltage (P-V) curve. Traditional methods for maximum power point tracking (MPPT), such as perturb and observe (P&O) and incremental conductance (INC), converge for LMPPs on the P-V curve, but metaheuristic algorithms can track the GMPP effectively. This paper proposes a new, efficient, and robust GMPP tracking technique based on a nature-inspired algorithm called Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves (AFT). Utilizing the AFT algorithm for MPPT in PV systems has several novel features and advantages, including its adaptability, exploration-exploitation balance, simplicity, efficiency, and innovative approach. These characteristics make AFT a promising choice for enhancing the efficiency of PV systems under varied circumstances. The performance of the proposed method in tracking the GMPP is evaluated using a simulation model under MATLAB/Simulink environment, the achieved simulation results are compared to particle swarm optimization (PSO). The proposed method is also tested in real-time using the Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) emulator to validate the achieved simulation results. The findings indicate that the proposed AFT-based GMPP tracking method performs better under complex partial irradiance conditions than PSO. © 2023 by the authors.

Orbital Hall effect in light metals has attracted attentions recently, but research on the orbital Rashba-Edelstein effect and its inverse effect is relatively limited. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate the existence of both effects in CoFeB/Pt/CuOx multilayers. By conducting spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) and anisotropic magneto resistance (AMR) measurements simultaneously and calculating the ratio between them, we rule out the current shunt effect and conclude the surface oxidized Cu film contributes to the generation of orbital Hall currents, and these orbital Hall currents exhibit the same polarization as the spin currents generated by Pt. Our argument is further substantiated by the THz emission measurements which show that the effective spin diffusion length in Pt increases from 3.57 nm to 4.37 nm with the addition of CuOx. Our work provides further evidence to the hypothesis of interface related charge-orbital interconversion.

We demonstrate a high performance back-end-of-line (BEOL) compatible tungsten (W)-doped In 2 O 3 channel (IWO) dual gate (DG) field-effect transistor (FET) with ultra low-leakage current $<10^{-15}\ \ \mathrm{A}/\mu \mathrm{m}$ and high $\mathrm{I}_{\text{ON}}/\mathrm{I}_{\text{OFF}}$ ratio of $5.8\times 10^{11}$ at 2.5V overdrive $(\mathrm{V}_{\text{ov}})$ . In addition, the IWO DG FET demonstrates a record low negative bias temperature instability (NBTI) of 7.2mV, record low hot carrier degradation (HCD) of 63mV and a low positive bias temperature instability (PBTI) of 85mV at 1V $\mathrm{V}_{\text{ov}}$ which makes IWO DG FET a potential candidate for realizing high density embedded-DRAM for last-level cache (LLC). Furthermore, we develop a comprehensive modeling framework for assesing the reliability of amorphous oxide semiconductor (AOS) channel FETs which can provide insights into the threshold voltage $(\mathrm{V}_{\mathrm{T}})$ instability mechanisms and help design appropriate mitigation strategies.

We consider a decentralized online convex optimization problem in a static undirected network of agents, where each agent controls only a coordinate (or a part) of the global decision vector. For such a problem, we propose a decentralized variant of Nesterov's primal-dual algorithm with dual averaging. To mitigate the disagreements on the primal-vector updates, the agents implement a generalization of the local information-exchange dynamics recently proposed by Li and Marden [1]. We show that the regret has sublinear growth of O(T~(1/2)) with the time horizon T when the stepsize is of the form 1/t~(1/2) and the objective functions are Lipschitz-continuous convex functions with Lipschitz gradients. We prove an analogous bound on the expected regret for the stochastic variant of the algorithm.

Home security is a crucial aspect that requires careful attention, particularly when it comes to addressing theft concerns. Hence, implementing smart door technology equipped with facial recognition holds promising potential for enhancing home security. This study aims to develop a more secure and regulated home entry system by leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) technology and Machine Learning computer Vision for facial recognition. The system integrates IoT devices, such as cameras and automatic doors, wherein facial image data is captured by the camera and processed using the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) algorithm to identify individuals. Once an individual is recognized, the system grants access to the home through an automated door. By relying on facial features, the system effectively restricts unauthorized access and safeguards homes against theft risks. Therefore, the advancement of a safer and more controlled home entry system utilizing IoT technology and Machine Learning computer Vision holds tremendous benefits for homeowners.

This paper presents an extended gate field effect transistor based ion sensing platform utilizing flexible printed ion selective electrodes. A custom-printed circuit board with a Bluetooth-enabled microcontroller module enables wireless monitoring of the transistor's transfer characteristics modulated by the ion concentration in the target solution. The utilization of printing techniques such as inkjet printing and direct 3D writing provide the scope for facile and cost-effective fabrication. The system has been utilized for remote monitoring of Potassium and Ammonium ions with ideal Nernstian response, high sensitivity, and selectivity. This work provides a promising path for real-time and continuous ion monitoring which has crucial implications for health, industry, and environmental applications.

By querying approximate surrogate models of different fidelity as available information sources, Multi-Fidelity Bayesian Optimization (MFBO) aims at optimizing unknown functions that are costly if not infeasible to evaluate. Existing MFBO methods often assume that approximate surrogates have consistently high/low fidelity across the input domain. However, approximate evaluations from the same surrogate can have different fidelity at different input regions due to data availability and model constraints, especially when considering machine learning surrogates. In this work, we investigate MFBO when multi-fidelity approximations have input-dependent fidelity. By explicitly capturing input dependency for multi-fidelity queries in Gaussian Process (GP), our new input-dependent MFBO (iMFBO) with learnable noise models better captures the fidelity of each information source in an intuitive way. We further design a new acquisition function for iMFBO and prove that the queries selected by iMFBO have higher quality than those by naive MFBO methods, with the derived sub-linear regret bound. Experiments on both synthetic and real-world data demonstrate its superior empirical performance.

An Incremental Phase Mapping Approach for X-ray Diffraction Patterns using Binary Peak Representations

Despite the huge advancement in knowledge discovery and data mining techniques, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis process has mostly remained untouched and still involves manual investigation, comparison, and verification. Due to the large volume of XRD samples from high-throughput XRD experiments, it has become impossible for domain scientists to process them manually. Recently, they have started leveraging standard clustering techniques, to reduce the XRD pattern representations requiring manual efforts for labeling and verification. Nevertheless, these standard clustering techniques do not handle problem-specific aspects such as peak shifting, adjacent peaks, background noise, and mixed phases;hence, resulting in incorrect composition-phase diagrams that complicate further steps. Here, we leverage data mining techniques along with domain expertise to handle these issues. In this paper, we introduce an incremental phase mapping approach based on binary peak representations using a new threshold based fuzzy dissimilarity measure. The proposed approach first applies an incremental phase computation algorithm on discrete binary peak representation of XRD samples, followed by hierarchical clustering or manual merging of similar pure phases to obtain the final composition-phase diagram. We evaluate our method on the composition space of two ternary alloy systems-Co-Ni-Ta and Co-Ti-Ta. Our results are verified by domain scientists and closely resembles the manually computed ground-truth composition-phase diagrams. The proposed approach takes us closer towards achieving the goal of complete end-to-end automated XRD analysis. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.
