The accurate detection and diagnosis of faults are critical for maintaining optimal operation and ensuring the reliability of industrial processes. Notably, the topic of online fault detection and diagnosis has recently presented a significant challenge. This work mainly deploys a neural network technique for the comprehensive detection and diagnosis of faults within the Tennessee Eastman Process (TEP) on a low-computational power system, the Raspberry Pi board. The devolved methodology showcases a remarkable level of accuracy (94.50%) in diagnosing the various TEP faults, affirming its robustness and effectiveness. To elevate the practical applicability of the proposed approach, a meticulous investigation into the implementation of the suggested approach on a Raspberry Pi 4 card was undertaken. The successful realization of this implementation not only highlights the adaptability of the approach but also paves the way for its seamless integration into practical industrial applications.

As a new communication paradigm, neural network-driven semantic communication (SemCom) has demonstrated considerable promise in enhancing resource efficiency by transmitting the semantics rather than all bits of source information. Using a large semantic coding model can accurately distil semantics, and significantly save the required bandwidth. However, this consumes a large amount of computing resources, which are also precious in the network. In this paper, we investigate the joint computing resources and bandwidth allocation for SemCom networks. We first introduce the computing latency model in SemCom, and formulate the joint computing resources and bandwidth allocation optimization problem with the objective of maximizing semantic accuracy. Then, we transform this problem into a deep reinforcement learning framework and exploit a multi-agent proximal policy optimization to solve it. Numerical results show that the proposed method significantly improves the average semantic accuracy in the resource-constrained cases, compared with the two baselines.

The boom of semiconductor quantum computing platforms created a demand for computer-aided design and fabrication of quantum devices. Path-integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) can have an important role in this effort because it intrinsically integrates strong quantum correlations that often appear in these multielectron systems. In this paper we present a PIMC algorithm that estimates exchange interactions of three-dimensional electrically defined quantum dots. We apply this model to silicon complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) devices and we benchmark our method against well-tested full configuration interaction simulations. As an application, we study the impact of a single charge trap on two exchanging dots, opening the possibility of using this code to test the tolerance to disorder of CMOS devices. This algorithm provides an accurate description of this system, setting up an initial step to integrate PIMC algorithms into development of semiconductor quantum computers.

Storage is expected to be a critical source of firming in low-carbon grids. A common concern raised from ex-post assessments is that storage resources can fail to respond to strong price signals during times of scarcity. While commonly attributed to forecast error or failures in operations, we posit that this behavior can be explained from the perspective of risk-averse scheduling. Using a stochastic self-scheduling framework and real-world data harvested from the Australian National Electricity Market, we demonstrate that risk-averse storage resources tend to have a myopic operational perspective, that is, they typically engage in near-term price arbitrage and chase only few extreme price spikes and troughs, thus remaining idle in several time periods with markedly high and low prices. This has important policy implications given the non-transparency of unit risk aversion and apparent risk in intervention decision-making.

The ability to arbitrarily and flexibly control the polarization of light, including both the state of polarization (SoP) and the degree of polarization (DoP), is highly important for quantum optics, polarization imaging, and coherent optical communications. Although metasurfaces have shown promise in polarization control, the few studies focusing on the DoP often lack flexibility in manipulation. Here, we propose a novel approach using a disordered metasurface to flexibly convert natural light into partially polarized light, enabling independent and flexible control over all Stokes parameters. The metasurface is composed of two types of meta-atoms, uniformly distributed with specific quantity ratios, decoupling the design parameters in the process of polarization control, and allowing a one-to-one correspondence between metasurface and polarization spaces. The azimuthal and elevation angles of the SoP on the Poincaré sphere are independently controlled by the meta-atom rotation and size, while the DoP is governed by the quantity ratio. A developed algorithm determines the disordered metasurface arrangement, with theoretical calculations showing an average error of less than 3° for both the azimuthal and elevation angles and a control accuracy of ±0.05 for the DoP. The key idea behind this study is to integrate a moving window dynamic PCA (MW-DPCA) methodology for fault detection within the Tennessee Eastman process (TEP) into a low-computational power system, the Raspberry Pi 4 card, for real-time application. Indeed, the paramount importance of real-time fault detection (FD) in intricate industrial processes presents a critical challenge. Various data-driven techniques have been developed to ensure safety, maintain operational stability, and optimize productivity in such processes. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is a fundamental data-driven technique that utilizes dimensionality reduction to extract the most informative features from high-dimensional data, simplifying analysis and potentially revealing underlying fault patterns. However, PCA primarily focuses on static relationships and may miss crucial temporal dynamics for fault identification. This is where dynamic PCA (DPCA) excels. By incorporating lagged values of variables, DPCA captures the temporal evolution of features, enabling a more comprehensive understanding of process behavior and improving the detection of faults involving dynamic changes. In order to address the stochastic measurements, a moving average filter tool is also employed. The results obtained and the successful realization of this implementation demonstrate the adaptability of the approach and pave the way for its seamless integration into practical industrial applications.

The increasing penetration of renewable based distributed energy resources (DERs) in distribution network (DN) leads to larger and more frequent voltage variation in distributions network (DN), thus posing challenges on voltage control. Real-time local voltage control method is a promising solution for the above issue. However, the local voltage control function needs to be customized and optimized according to real distribution system condition. In this paper, a swarm intelligence based Volt/Var control optimal design method (SO-VVC) is proposed to optimize the control function. Compared with existing approaches, the proposed method can not only represent the nonlinear behaviour of power flow but is also computation efficient. The performance of the proposed SO-VVC is demonstrated by case studies on a modified IEEE-123 bus system.

The electric power system is currently experiencing radical changes stemming from the increasing share of renewable energy resources and the consequent decommissioning of conventional power plants based on synchronous generators. Since the principal providers of ancillary services are being phased out, new flexibility and reserve providers are needed. The proliferation of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) in modern distribution networks has opened new possibilities for distribution system operators, enabling them to fill the market gap by harnessing the DER flexibility. This paper introduces a novel centralized MPC-based controller that enables the concurrent provision of voltage support, primary and secondary frequency control by adjusting the setpoints of a heterogeneous group of DERs in active distribution grids. The input-multirate control framework is used to accommodate the distinct timescales and provision requirements of each ancillary service and to ensure that the available resources are properly allocated. Furthermore, an efficient way for incorporating network constraints in the formulation is proposed, where network decomposition is applied to a linear power flow formulation together with network reduction. In addition, different timescale dynamics of the employed DERs and their capability curves are included. The performance of the proposed controller is evaluated on several case studies via dynamic simulations of the IEEE 33-bus system. © 2022, CC BY.

Oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) patients with associated human papillomavirus (HPV) infection generally present more favorable outcomes than HPV-negative patients and, consequently, their treatment with radiation therapy may be potentially de-escalated. The diagnostic accuracy of a deep learning (DL) model to predict HPV status on computed tomography (CT) images was evaluated in this study, together with its ability to perform unsupervised heatmap-based localization of relevant regions in OPC and HPV infection, i.e., the primary tumor and lymph nodes, as a measure of its reliability. The dataset consisted of 767 patients from one internal and two public collections from The Cancer Imaging Archive and was split into training, validation and test sets using the ratio 60–20–20. Images were resampled to a resolution of 2 mm3 and a sub-volume of 96 pixels3 was automatically cropped, which spanned from the nose until the start of the lungs. Models Genesis was fine-tuned for the classification task. Grad-CAM and Score-CAM were applied to the test subjects that belonged to the internal cohort (n = 24), and the overlap and Dice coefficients between the resulting heatmaps and the planning target volumes (PTVs) were calculated. Final train/validation/test area-under-the-curve (AUC) values of 0.9/0.87/0.87, accuracies of 0.83/0.82/0.79, and F1-scores of 0.83/0.79/0.74 were achieved. The reliability analysis showed an increased focus on dental artifacts in HPV-positive patients, whereas promising overlaps and moderate Dice coefficients with the PTVs were obtained for HPV-negative cases. These findings prove the necessity of performing reliability studies before a DL model is implemented in a real clinical setting, even if there is optimal diagnostic accuracy. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a prevalent immune-mediated skin condition, affecting millions of people worldwide. Significant diagnostic challenges occur due to the subjectivity inherent in the current diagnostic approach, which involves skin patches. To address this limitation, the present study explores the potential of machine and deep learning algorithms in automating ACD diagnosis, thereby facilitating more objective and accurate assessments. A dataset comprising 1579 skin patch images from 200 patients was collected, to train and evaluate the proposed diagnostic models. The dataset underwent extensive feature extraction, resulting in 732 distinct features. These features were utilized to train traditional machine learning models, such as Random Forest, Support Vector Machines, and XGBoost, with the objective of identifying correlations related to ACD. In a second approach, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures such as EfficientNet, ResNet, and MobileNet, were evaluated in recognizing patterns in different image types, such as Texture and Redness, correlated with ACD cases. The results have indicated that machine learning algorithms can achieve a success rate of 83% in ACD detection, with the fusion algorithm of the two approaches boosting the success rate to 85%. The significance of this research lies in the enhancement of overall diagnostic accuracy achieved through the combination of information from various sources. It highlights that machine learning and CNNs can automate ACD diagnosis, making it more objective and efficient. This advancement can greatly assist clinical diagnosis, and benefit regions with limited medical resources and many patients worldwide.
