COVID-19, corona virus disease, has been ravaging the world since the last quarter of 2019. To address this threat, the World Health Organization (WHO) has established a list of priority medical equipment that must be used by hospitals and clinics. These equipments are in fact non-linear harmonic-producing loads that have a detrimental effect on the devices and degrade the quality of the power supply. In this paper a parallel active filter: a neuronal harmonic compensation strategy based on plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) connected to the charging stations in the parking lot of hospitals and clinics and artificial intelligence is proposed in order to improve the quality of power supply thus protecting medical equipment in order to save lives. This strategy will be simulated in MATLAB and the results will be presented as evidence of its effectiveness.

A novel strategy for sparse attack detection and localization in secure state estimation of power systems

In this paper, problem of secure state estimation in power systems in the presence of sparse attack is investigated. Using secure measurements technique for the first time, the required secure measurements are determined for each sparse attack. In the proposed scheme, it is not necessary that all measurements be encoded or transmitted in a dedicated communication channels such as fiber optic links. Therefore, implementation of it is cost-effective. Using the secure measurements technique, modified measurement Jacobian matrices are obtained and then modified residual vectors are designed. The residual vectors are designed such that only one detector is reacted to the specific sparse attack, so attacks are localized. The design procedure is based on a simple search which can be done easily and in a fast manner even for the large power systems. Due to the fact that the exact location of the attack in the power system is identified (measurements under the sparse attack), an algorithm is proposed that obtains the correct state estimation. The simulation results on the IEEE-14 bus power system are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. © 2025

A Switch Architecture for Time-Triggered Transmission with Best-Effort Delivery

In Time-Triggered (TT) or time-sensitive networks, the transmission of a TT frame is required to be scheduled at a precise time instant for industrial distributed real-time control systems. Other (or best-effort (BE)) frames are forwarded in a BE manner. Under this scheduling strategy, the transmission of a TT frame must wait until its scheduled instant even if it could have been transmitted sooner. On the other hand, BE frames are transmitted whenever possible but may miss deadlines or may even be dropped due to congestion. As a result, TT transmission and BE delivery are incompatible with each other. To remedy this incompatibility, we propose a synergistic switch architecture (SWA) for TT transmission with BE delivery to dynamically improve the end-to-end (e2e) latency of TT frames by opportunistically exploiting BE delivery. Given a TT frame, the SWA generates and transmits a cloned copy with BE delivery. The first frame arriving at the receiver device is delivered with a configured jitter and the other copy ignored. So, the SWA achieves shorter latency and controllable jitter, the best of both worlds. We have implemented SWA using FPGAs in an industry-strength TT switches and used four test scenarios to demonstrate SWA's improvements of e2e latency and controllable jitter over the state-of-the-art TT transmission scheme. Inverse design has proved to be a powerful tool in photonics for compact, high-performance devices. To date, applications have been limited to linear systems but have rarely been investigated or demonstrated in nonlinear regimes. In addition, the "black box"nature of inverse design techniques hinders the understanding of the optimized structure. Here, we propose an inverse design approach to amplify the efficiency of on-chip photon pair generation. We implement this strategy based on the open-source package EMopt. Our method employs a multi-frequency co-optimization strategy and calculates gradients with respect to the design parameters via the adjoint method. The resulting efficiency enhancement stems not only from the field intensification due to the confinement of light from high-quality factor cavity resonances but also from the improvement of phase-matching conditions, along with coupling between the cavity and waveguide mode considered in the design. We demonstrate the capability of the proposed method by fabricating and characterizing an optimized device that enables the efficient generation of photon pairs. Our design follows the fabrication constraints and can be used for scalable quantum light sources in large-scale computing and communication applications. Interestingly, the shape of the proposed design can also be explained by the effective potential method. The proposed optimization technique can be generalized to other nonlinear processes for compact frequency-mixing devices on-chip. © 2024 SPIE.

In isolated microgrids (MGs), including plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and renewable energy resources (RERs) sizing of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) is critical since MGs do not have the support of upstream utility grid in isolated mode. Hence, this paper suggests a sizing scheme for BESSs in an isolated MG, including PHEVs and RERs. The aim of the proposed scheme is continuously feeding all the load of the MG without any load shedding. In this paper, the load profile of the MG and output power of distributed generation (DG) units are calculated for four different seasons, and then, maximum rated power of the BESS is determined based on the load profile as well as the output power of DGs. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in sizing a BESS in an isolated MG in the presence of PHEVs and RERs with intermittent output power, we implemented it on the modified version of IEEE 33-bus test system which is being operated in isolated mode. © 2020 IEEE.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been widely recognized as an efficient technique to reconfigure the electromagnetic environment in favor of wireless communication performance. In this paper, we propose a new application of IRS for device-free target sensing via joint location and orientation estimation. In particular, different from the existing works that use IRS as an additional anchor node for localization/sensing, we consider mounting IRS on the sensing target, whereby estimating the IRS’s location and orientation as that of the target by leveraging IRS’s controllable signal reflection. To this end, we first propose a tensor-based method to acquire essential angle information between the IRS and the sensing transmitter as well as a set of distributed sensing receivers. Next, based on the estimated angle information, we formulate two optimization problems to estimate the location and orientation of the IRS/target, respectively, and obtain the locally optimal solutions to them by invoking two iterative algorithms, namely, gradient descent method and manifold optimization. In particular, we show that the orientation estimation problem admits a closed-form solution in a special case that usually holds in practice. Furthermore, theoretical analysis is conducted to draw essential insights into the proposed sensing system design and performance. Simulation results verify our theoretical analysis and demonstrate that the proposed methods can achieve high estimation accuracy which is close to the theoretical bound. In many fields, time series anomaly detection is gaining more and more attention, \textit{e.g.}, air pollution, geological hazards, and network traffic detection. Time series anomaly detection in water quality aims to identify anomalous samples. However, there are several challenges in anomaly detection of water quality time series: 1) Difficulty in obtaining local and global temporal dependencies of time series;2) Difficulty in learning a representation map from time series that enables effective discrimination of anomalies;and 3) Complex nonlinear relationship in water quality time series, making it difficult to detect long-term anomalies. To solve these problems, this work proposes a time series anomaly detection model called Transformer with Variational Autoencoder (TransVAE). First, this work integrates local and global temporal position embedding to improve temporally dependent representation. Second, It adopts a Variational Autoencoder (VAE) to fuse signals and reconstruct their expected distribution. Third, we use a Transformer to process nonlinear relationships in the time series and use residual mechanisms to improve long-term series anomaly detection accuracy. This work adopts two real-world datasets to evaluate the proposed TransVAE, and experiments demonstrate that TransVAE outperforms several state-of-the-art methods in terms of time series anomaly detection accuracy. © 2024, The Authors. The replacement of conventional generating units with non-conventional renewable energy resources impacts the reliability of power systems. With high integration of renewable-based generation resources, there is a reduction in total system inertia, which could lead to systems with less time to react for frequency restoration in case of unexpected unit failures. Though several power system testbeds are available for studying and analysing different stability phenomena, none are suitable for characterizing, or analyzing low-inertia conditions. In this paper, a power system simulation environment is introduced for investigating control architectures for power grids, with special attention to the impact of high penetration of inverter-based generation resources (IBRs). The testbed is applied to the WSCC 9- bus test system, modified so that a range of IBR penetration levels can be analyzed (from zero to 80%). The testbed is suitable for studying both fast and slow electromechanical phenomena. A conclusion from numerical experiments is that high levels of IBRs do not necessarily result in low-inertia. This is due in part to the layers of control in the grid already in place to avoid frequency excursions.

Controlled Growth of High-Quality Β-Ag2se Nanowires and Their Applications in Near-Infrared Photodetection

This work reports the controlled growth of single-crystalline β-Ag2Se nanowires and their application in near-infrared photodetection. High-quality Ag2Se nanowires with an orthorhombic crystal structure are grown via the chemical vapor deposition method with a length up to 32.8 [[EQUATION]] and a diameter down to 52.1 nm. By fine-tuning the growth parameters such as total tube inner pressure and precursor temperature, the length of Ag2Se nanowires can be precisely controlled. A dynamic growth model is also introduced to interpret the growth mechanism of Ag2Se nanowires. Two-terminal photodetectors based on single Ag2Se nanowire are fabricated and show competitive photodetection performance compared to that of other silver chalcogenide nanomaterial-based photodetectors. At room temperature, the fabricated Ag2Se nanowire-based photodetector exhibits a broadband response range of 400 - 1064 nm at a bias voltage of 2 V, while the peak photo-response performance is obtained in the near-infrared region. Under 830 nm light illumination, the maximum responsivity, specific detectivity, rise time and decay time are measured and calculated to be 99.6 mA/W and 2.56 × 108 Jones, 23.84 ms and 47.6 ms, respectively, demonstrating its great potential in uncooled near-infrared photodetector applications. © 2024, The Authors. electrical power generation from the oceanic wave is one of the noteworthy footsteps in the field of renewable energy resource based energy conversion system. There are different technologies regarding electricity generation by using linear electrical generators along with the wave energy devices. This paper presents various control technologies of the linear generator that are widely been used for harvesting oceanic wave energy. Several controllers are discussed that are used to control the voltage, current, and power flow of the linear generator. Mathematical models of different controllers are discussed. Connection of the controller with the linear generator, input, output, outcome, and method of the controller with their pros and cons are presented as well. In addition, testing devices and their controls for the linear generator are presented with their schematic diagram. This paper would play vital role to the researcher for the future development of the linear generator for oceanic wave energy conversion. © 2021 IEEE
