In this work, we consider a multi-server federated learning (FL) framework, referred to as Confederated Learning (CFL), in order to accommodate a larger number of users. To reduce the communication overhead of the CFL system, we propose a linearly convergent stochastic gradient method. The proposed algorithm incorporates a conditionally-triggered user selection (CTUS) mechanism as the central component. Simulation results show that it achieves advantageous communication efficiency over GT-SAGA.

In this paper we deal with stochastic optimization problems where the data distributions change in response to the decision variables. Traditionally, the study of optimization problems with decision-dependent distributions has assumed either the absence of constraints or fixed constraints. This work considers a more general setting where the constraints can also dynamically adjust in response to changes in the decision variables. Specifically, we consider linear constraints and analyze the effect of decision-dependent distributions in both the objective function and constraints. Firstly, we establish a sufficient condition for the existence of a constrained equilibrium point, at which the distributions remain invariant under retraining. Moreover, we propose and analyze two algorithms: repeated constrained optimization and repeated dual ascent. For each algorithm, we provide sufficient conditions for convergence to the constrained equilibrium point. Furthermore, we explore the relationship between the equilibrium point and the optimal point for the constrained decision-dependent optimization problem. Notably, our results encompass previous findings as special cases when the constraints remain fixed. To show the effectiveness of our theoretical analysis, we provide numerical experiments on both a market problem and a dynamic pricing problem for parking based on real-world data. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Quantum technologies based on quantum point defects in crystals require control over the defect charge state. Here we tune the charge state of shallow nitrogen-vacancy and silicon-vacancy centers by locally oxidizing a hydrogenated surface with moderate optical excitation and simultaneous spectral monitoring. The loss of conductivity and change in work function due to oxidation are measured in atmosphere using conductive atomic force microscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). We correlate these scanning probe measurements with optical spectroscopy of the nitrogen-vacancy and silicon-vacancy centers created via implantation 15–25 nm beneath the diamond surface and annealing. The observed charge state of the defects as a function of optical exposure demonstrates that laser oxidation provides a way to precisely tune the Fermi level over a range of at least 2.00 eV. We also observe a significantly larger oxidation rate for implanted surfaces compared to unimplanted surfaces under ambient conditions. Combined with knowledge of the electron affinity of a surface, these results suggest KPFM is a powerful, high-spatial-resolution technique to advance surface Fermi level engineering for charge stabilization of quantum defects.

Despite their age, passwords are still widely used more than ever. In many cases, it is the solution that best fits the usage scenario. Researchers are proposing innovative designs and methods to support these scenarios. Many systems, especially sensitive ones, need to change the password. Classic systems rely on changing passwords in two stages, the first i s authentication, which usually consists of two or three rounds, and the second is creating a new password (PW), which also consists of two or three rounds. In this paper, a hidden transmission of a new random PW using the previous one is presented, we talk about an authenticated changing of PW. The verifier g enerates half of the new password and sends it to the prover, the prover authenticates the sent message using the old PW and then returns the authentication proof. After checking it, the verifier creates the second half of the PW. The proposed method combines the authentication and change PW processes into one process consisting of 3 rounds. Therefore, the proposal facilitates the process of automatic periodic change of PW between two entities (user, app, system, etc). Analysis and experiments show that our technique is robust, lightweight, and reduces many potential risks in the field.

Broadband light extraction from near-surface NV centers using crystalline-silicon antennas

We use crystalline silicon (Si) antennas to efficiently extract broadband single-photon fluorescence from shallow nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond into free space. Our design features relatively easy-to-pattern high-index Si resonators on the diamond surface to boost photon extraction by overcoming total internal reflection and Fresnel reflection at the diamond-air interface, and providing modest Purcell enhancement, without etching or otherwise damaging the diamond surface. In simulations, ~17 times more single photons are collected from a single NV center compared to the case without the antenna;in experiments, we observe an enhancement of ~9 times, limited by spatial alignment between the NV and the antenna. Our approach can be readily applied to other color centers in diamond, and more generally to the extraction of light from quantum emitters in wide-bandgap materials. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. The recently proposed concept of Age of Information (AoI) measures the freshness of the sensor data sampled by remote Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which is an important indicator for the smart city. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) communication can significantly reduce the sensor data’s AoI due to its high maneuverability. However, the UAV’s high energy consumption remains a challenging issue. In this paper, we propose a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) assisted UAV data collection framework to minimize UAV energy consumption. By adjusting the phase of the RIS, the UAV can collect more sensor data simultaneously. A RIS phase alignment method is introduced to reduce the complexity of RIS phase solving. The IoT devices are clustered to discretize UAV trajectory. The optimal clustering scheme to maximize the AoI suppression efficiency is found by adjusting the RIS phase alignment points continuously. Therefore, the AoI requirement can be achieved with a shorter UAV flight distance. Finally, the UAV trajectory is solved by the Deep Q network (DQN) algorithm to guarantee the long-term AoI requirement. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Human capability for Speaker Recognition (SR) exceeds recent machine learning approaches, even in noisy environments. To bridge this gap, researchers investigate the human auditory system to support machine learning algorithm performance. The paper introduces a novel feature extraction method, named “Power Wavelet Cepstral Coefficients” (PWCC), for enhancing SR accuracy. This method is derived from the “Normalized Wavelet FilterBank” (NWFB), which utilizes an “Equivalent Rectangular Bandwidth” rate (ERB-rate) scale and additionally integrates a "Noise Suppression Module" (NSM). The NWFB imitates the cochlea’s frequency selectivity using “Morlet Wavelet filters” alongside an ERB-rate scale. The NSM applies a medium-duration power analysis, an asymmetrical noise-suppression module incorporating a temporal masking component, and a spectral smoothing module to reduce the impact of noisy signal. To assess the performance of the proposed PWCC method, experiments were conducted using clean speech signals from the TIMIT database, corrupted with various noises from the AURORA dataset. Using a “Gaussian Mixture Model-Universal Background Model” (GMM-UBM) classifier, the PWCC method demonstrated superior SR accuracy in noisy environments compared to traditional methods such as PNCC and MFCC. Furthermore, PWCC maintained higher precision, recall, and F1-scores than PNCC and MFCC under overall noise conditions. For instance, with babble noise at 15dB SNR, PWCC achieved a recognition rate of 92.06%, compared to 75.24% for PNCC and 68.33% for MFCC. © 2013 IEEE.

Abstract reasoning, as one of the hallmarks of human intelligence, involves collecting information, identifying abstract rules, and applying the rules to solve new problems. Although neural networks have achieved human-level performances in several tasks, the abstract reasoning techniques still far lag behind due to the complexity of learning and applying the logic rules, especially in an unsupervised manner. In this work, we propose a novel framework, ARII, that learns rule representations for Abstract Reasoning via Internal Inferences. The key idea is to repeatedly apply a rule to different instances in hope of having a comprehensive understanding (i.e., representations) of the rule. Specifically, ARII consists of a rule encoder, a reasoner, and an internal referrer. Based on the representations produced by the rule encoder, the reasoner draws the conclusion while the referrer performs internal inferences to regularize rule representations to be robust and generalizable. We evaluate ARII on two benchmark datasets, including PGM and I-RAVEN. We observe that ARII achieves new state-of-the-art records on the majority of the reasoning tasks, including most of the generalization tests in PGM.

This paper introduces a misalignment-tolerant design method for wireless power transfer (WPT) systems by optimization of compensation network parameters. Leveraging the derivation of two-port impedance parameters and adjoint sensitivity analysis, the coupling misalignment characteristics of the system are assessed. Subsequently, a parameter-centric misalignment tolerant approach, independent of the coil structure, is established through a linear fitting method. The proposed approach ensures zero-voltage switching (ZVS) and facilitates efficient stable constant current (CC) output. Experimental validation is performed on a scaled-down 500-W rated SS-compensated WPT prototype equipped with non-specialized square-shaped coils, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The proposed method enhances the SS-compensated system's ability to tolerate both horizontal and vertical misalignments, surpassing the performance of conventional SS topologies. Specifically, the system achieves over 85% efficiency within the misalignment tolerance range, with a peak efficiency of 93.2%. Additionally, the load current variation remains within 5.8% for 100 mm x-misalignment and -15 to +50 mm z-misalignment. © 1986-2012 IEEE.
