Enhanced Local Pattern Transformation Based Feature Extraction for Identification of Parkinson’s Disease Using Gait Signals

One of the most common ailments, especially among the elderly, is Parkinson's disease (PD). Although previous research has demonstrated that heuristics can diagnose Parkinson's disease using decisive signs like tremor, muscular rigidity, movement disorders, and voice disorders, it has also been reported that current approaches, which rely on simple motor tasks, are limited and lack stability and accessibility. The purpose of this study is to identify a novel cost-effective and time-efficient early detection technique for the prediction of this disease using a signal processing feature extraction approach namely, Shifted Extended Local Binary Pattern (S-ELBP) using gait signals. The features extracted using the proposed methods are given as the input to an artificial neural network (ANN) to classify them as Healthy or Parkinson’s. The proposed method has quite promising results when evaluated using different performance metrics. The method has yielded accuracy: 97.6%, specificity: 95.71%, sensitivity: 99, positive predictive value (PPV): 97.2%, negative predictive value (NPV): 98.8%, Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC): 95.4%, F1-score: 97.9%, and geometric mean: 97.19%. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

K-Test: An Analytical Model for Measurement-Based Server Selection Based on Response Time

Different paradigms employ server selection to establish a fast connection to end users, thereby reducing the delay associated with exchanging data between mobile users and servers. To efficiently infer the statistics of the server response, we propose an analytical model for server selection based on K measured response times, namely, the K-Test method. First, the probability that the user device correctly selects the best server and the corresponding time taken in K-Test method are investigated. Then, we study the server switch when connection failure is encountered. The proposed analytical model for K-Test method considers the distribution of the response time of candidate servers and derives three metrics, namely the probability of selecting the best server, the expected latency of the server selection process, and the false connection failure detection probability. The analytical model is validated by the simulation. Numerical results show that both the value of K and the number of candidate servers significantly affect the selection probability. Also, it needs more test rounds to correctly find the best server when users experience a variation in the network response times. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

While fairness-aware machine learning algorithms have been receiving increasing attention, the focus has been on centralized machine learning, leaving decentralized methods underexplored. Federated Learning is a decentralized form of machine learning where clients train local models with a server aggregating them to obtain a shared global model. Data heterogeneity amongst clients is a common characteristic of Federated Learning, which may induce or exacerbate discrimination of unprivileged groups defined by sensitive attributes such as race or gender. In this work we propose FAIR-FATE: a novel FAIR FederATEd Learning algorithm that aims to achieve group fairness while maintaining high utility via a fairness-aware aggregation method that computes the global model by taking into account the fairness of the clients. To achieve that, the global model update is computed by estimating a fair model update using a Momentum term that helps to overcome the oscillations of non-fair gradients. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first approach in machine learning that aims to achieve fairness using a fair Momentum estimate. Experimental results on real-world datasets demonstrate that FAIR-FATE outperforms state-of-the-art fair Federated Learning algorithms under different levels of data heterogeneity. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper presents a novel approach to compensate periodic perturbations that occur in a vast variety of production processes. Typically, these perturbations interrupt the steady-state motion of mechanical systems, resulting in production inaccuracies. To address that problem, an adaptive torque feedforward algorithm is employed to systematically reduce unknown perturbations affects on the mechanical system. The algorithm is inherent stable and purely based on stochastic values. Therefore, the adaptation process uses only gradient-free optimization methods. All presented results can be, without any means, incorporated into a state-of-the-art programmable logic controller. Correctness of the stated algorithm is verified by simulation on the widely used two non-rigid coupled rotational masses spring-damper system corrupted by periodic perturbations on the load-end. © 2023 IEEE.

Cybersecurity knowledge is essential in today’s increasingly digital healthcare environment to protect sensitive patient data and guarantee the integrity of healthcare systems. But conventional cybersecurity training approaches frequently fail to hold healthcare professionals’ attention, which results in inadequate application and retention of the material. In order to increase cybersecurity awareness among healthcare professionals, this study investigates the use of gamification—a technological technique that incorporates game design aspects into non-gaming contexts—as an innovative method. A mixed-methods research methodology is used in the study to assess the effectiveness of a cybersecurity training program that is gamified. To encourage user involvement and motivation, the program incorporates aspects like leaderboards, interactive scenarios, badges, and points. The study included a total of 100 healthcare professionals from various departments, offering a thorough understanding of the program’s effects across a range of positions and experience levels. Pre- and post-training surveys were used to gather quantitative data on participant changes in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors pertaining to cybersecurity procedures. Furthermore, semi-structured interviews yielded qualitative insights that further elucidated the participants’ perspectives and experiences with the gamified training method. Comparing gamification to conventional training approaches, the results show that gamification dramatically improves engagement and knowledge retention. The willingness of the participants to acquire and use cybersecurity techniques in their daily lives has reportedly increased. Additionally, the gamified components strengthened the training objectives by fostering a competitive yet cooperative learning environment. Agriculture plays a major role in developing countries like India, however the food security still remains a vital issue. Most of the crops get wasted due to lack of storage facility, transportation, and plant diseases. More than 15% of the crops get wasted in India due to diseases and hence it has become one of the major concern to be resolved. There is a need of automatic system that can identify these diseases and help farmers to take appropriate steps to get rid of crop loss. Farmers have followed the conventional method of identifying the plant disease with their naked eyes, and it not possible for all the farmers to identify these diseases the same way. With the advance in Artificial Intelligence, there is a need to incorporate the facilities of the computer vision in the field of agriculture. Deep Learning rich libraries and user as well as developer friendly environment to work with, all these qualities make Deep Learning as the favorable method to get started with this problem. In this paper we have used Deep Learning because of the advantages it offers to work with images especially in image classification to get improvised results. The methodology includes taking leaves of infected crops and label them as per the disease pattern. The images of infected leaves are processed pixel based operations are applied to improve the information from the image. As a next step feature extraction is done followed by image segmentation and at the last classification of crop diseases based on the patterns extracted from the diseased leaves. The CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) is used for the classification of diseases, for the demonstration purpose the public dataset is used consisting of around 87 K images (RGB type images) including healthy as well as diseased leaves. © 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected millions of people globally, with respiratory organs being strongly affected in individuals with comorbidities. Medical imaging-based diagnosis and prognosis have become increasingly popular in clinical settings for detecting COVID-19 lung infections. Among various medical imaging modalities, ultrasound stands out as a low-cost, mobile, and radiation-safe imaging technology. In this comprehensive review, we focus on AI-driven studies utilizing lung ultrasound (LUS) for COVID-19 detection and analysis. We provide a detailed overview of both publicly available and private LUS datasets and categorize the AI studies according to the dataset they used. Additionally, we systematically analyzed and tabulated the studies across various dimensions, including data preprocessing methods, AI models, cross-validation techniques, and evaluation metrics. In total, we reviewed 60 articles, 41 of which utilized public datasets, while the remaining employed private data. Our findings suggest that ultrasound-based AI studies for COVID-19 detection have great potential for clinical use, especially for children and pregnant women. Our review also provides a useful summary for future researchers and clinicians who may be interested in the field. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

First-order k·p methods for electron intersubband scatterings in quantum wells

Using a first-order k·p Kane model, this work studies the impact of band-mixing, which gives rise to nonparabolicity, on electron intersubband scattering in zinc-blende semiconductor quantum well structures. The eight-band model considers both spin-flip and spin-conserving processes as well as a nonparabolic subband dispersion. We examine the effects of considering multiple band components in the total eigenstate, as well as their k-dependent properties, on LO phonon, impurity, and interface roughness (IFR) scattering. These k-dependent eigenstates account for the effects of varying wave function composition, spatial confinement and Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The angular dependencies of spin-conserving and spin-flip transitions are analyzed in the case of LO phonon emission scattering, and the heavy-hole interaction is shown to have a strong influence. The total (spin-conserving plus spin-flip) scattering is more concentrated in the forward direction than in the standard three-band k·p model. Furthermore, the neutrality of the scattering processes versus the spin-type of the initial state is discussed and is directly linked to the structural inversion asymmetry. The overall scattering rate is notably reduced when band-mixing is included within the framework of a first-order Kane model in comparison to a standard one-band k·p model. As an example, the total 2-to-1 LO phonon scattering decreases by up to ∼60% in narrow InAs/AlAsSb quantum wells (λ21∼2.7µm). Similarly significant reductions are also reported for IFR scattering. Interestingly, this slowing effect persists even for long wavelengths. Our results collectively emphasize the importance of band-mixing when modeling intersubband devices.

Model-to-Circuit Cross-Approximation for Printed Machine Learning Classifiers

Printed electronics (PEs) promises on-demand fabrication, low nonrecurring engineering costs, and subcent fabrication costs. It also allows for high customization that would be infeasible in silicon, and bespoke architectures prevail to improve the efficiency of emerging PE machine learning (ML) applications. Nevertheless, large feature sizes in PE prohibit the realization of complex ML models in PE, even with bespoke architectures. In this work, we present an automated, cross-layer approximation framework tailored to bespoke architectures that enable complex ML models, such as multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) and support vector machines (SVMs), in PE. Our framework adopts cooperatively a hardware-driven coefficient approximation of the ML model at algorithmic level, a netlist pruning at logic level, and a voltage overscaling at the circuit level. Extensive experimental evaluation on 12 MLPs and 12 SVMs and more than 6000 approximate and exact designs demonstrates that our model-to-circuit cross-approximation delivers power and area optimal designs that, compared to the state-of-the-art exact designs, feature on average 51% and 66% area and power reduction, respectively, for less than 5% accuracy loss. Finally, we demonstrate that our framework enables 80% of the examined classifiers to be battery-powered with almost identical accuracy with the exact designs, paving thus the way toward smart complex printed applications. © 1982-2012 IEEE.
