The COVID-19 pandemic has affected millions of people globally, with respiratory organs being strongly affected in individuals with comorbidities. Medical imaging-based diagnosis and prognosis have become increasingly popular in clinical settings for detecting COVID-19 lung infections. Among various medical imaging modalities, ultrasound stands out as a low-cost, mobile, and radiation-safe imaging technology. In this comprehensive review, we focus on AI-driven studies utilizing lung ultrasound (LUS) for COVID-19 detection and analysis. We provide a detailed overview of both publicly available and private LUS datasets and categorize the AI studies according to the dataset they used. Additionally, we systematically analyzed and tabulated the studies across various dimensions, including data preprocessing methods, AI models, cross-validation techniques, and evaluation metrics. In total, we reviewed 60 articles, 41 of which utilized public datasets, while the remaining employed private data. Our findings suggest that ultrasound-based AI studies for COVID-19 detection have great potential for clinical use, especially for children and pregnant women. Our review also provides a useful summary for future researchers and clinicians who may be interested in the field. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

The aim of this article is to present a survey on Machine Learning approaches for performing water analysis as in general integrating Artificial Intelligence in water analysis has a transformative potential for optimizing and sustaining water resources. Recent trends in water treatment and desalination applications effectively address pollution and scarcity challenges, while by combining AI with technologies like data analytics, water management complexities are simplified, ensuring sustainability and cost-effectiveness through predictive data assessment. This survey presents examples of the ML’s significance in water treatment and in water quality analysis, such as for enhancing accuracy in water quality index (WQI) assessments and examples of exploring and predicting pollutants in water processes, and aiding in the early detection and categorization of contaminants. Furthermore, this survey will reveal the immense potential in leveraging ML algorithms to enhance water analysis accuracy, speed, and efficiency, paving the way for reduced chemical usage and improved understanding of microbiological processes. As it will be presented, ML approaches offer valuable tools across various stages of water analysis, from identifying critical indicators to accurately measuring and predicting water parameters. The survey concludes by emphasizing the potential of AI and particularly ML to revolutionize water resource management, offering precision, efficiency, and foresight in addressing challenges of water scarcity and sustainable resource utilization. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2024.

In this paper,a compact mathematical model having an elegant structure,together with a generic control framework,are proposed for generic power systems dominated by power converters that are interconnected through a passive transmission and distribution(T&D)grid,by adopting the port-Hamiltonian(pH)systems theory and the fundamental circuit *** models of generic T&D lines are developed and then the model of a generic T&D grid is *** the proposed control framework,the controlled converters are proven to be passive and Input-to-State Stable(ISS).The compact mathematical model is scalable and can be applied to power systems with multiple power electronic converters with generic passive controllers,passive local loads,and different types of passive T&D lines connected in a meshed configuration without self-loops,so it is very ***,the resulting power system is proven to be ISS as *** analysis is carried out without assumptions on constant frequency/voltage,constant loads,and/or lossless networks,except the need of passivity for all parts involved,and without using the Clarke/Park transformations or the graph *** simplify the presentation,three-phase balanced systems are adopted but the results can be easily adapted for single-phase or unbalanced three-phase systems.

First-order k·p methods for electron intersubband scatterings in quantum wells

Using a first-order k·p Kane model, this work studies the impact of band-mixing, which gives rise to nonparabolicity, on electron intersubband scattering in zinc-blende semiconductor quantum well structures. The eight-band model considers both spin-flip and spin-conserving processes as well as a nonparabolic subband dispersion. We examine the effects of considering multiple band components in the total eigenstate, as well as their k-dependent properties, on LO phonon, impurity, and interface roughness (IFR) scattering. These k-dependent eigenstates account for the effects of varying wave function composition, spatial confinement and Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The angular dependencies of spin-conserving and spin-flip transitions are analyzed in the case of LO phonon emission scattering, and the heavy-hole interaction is shown to have a strong influence. The total (spin-conserving plus spin-flip) scattering is more concentrated in the forward direction than in the standard three-band k·p model. Furthermore, the neutrality of the scattering processes versus the spin-type of the initial state is discussed and is directly linked to the structural inversion asymmetry. The overall scattering rate is notably reduced when band-mixing is included within the framework of a first-order Kane model in comparison to a standard one-band k·p model. As an example, the total 2-to-1 LO phonon scattering decreases by up to ∼60% in narrow InAs/AlAsSb quantum wells (λ21∼2.7µm). Similarly significant reductions are also reported for IFR scattering. Interestingly, this slowing effect persists even for long wavelengths. Our results collectively emphasize the importance of band-mixing when modeling intersubband devices.

Model-to-Circuit Cross-Approximation for Printed Machine Learning Classifiers

Printed electronics (PEs) promises on-demand fabrication, low nonrecurring engineering costs, and subcent fabrication costs. It also allows for high customization that would be infeasible in silicon, and bespoke architectures prevail to improve the efficiency of emerging PE machine learning (ML) applications. Nevertheless, large feature sizes in PE prohibit the realization of complex ML models in PE, even with bespoke architectures. In this work, we present an automated, cross-layer approximation framework tailored to bespoke architectures that enable complex ML models, such as multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) and support vector machines (SVMs), in PE. Our framework adopts cooperatively a hardware-driven coefficient approximation of the ML model at algorithmic level, a netlist pruning at logic level, and a voltage overscaling at the circuit level. Extensive experimental evaluation on 12 MLPs and 12 SVMs and more than 6000 approximate and exact designs demonstrates that our model-to-circuit cross-approximation delivers power and area optimal designs that, compared to the state-of-the-art exact designs, feature on average 51% and 66% area and power reduction, respectively, for less than 5% accuracy loss. Finally, we demonstrate that our framework enables 80% of the examined classifiers to be battery-powered with almost identical accuracy with the exact designs, paving thus the way toward smart complex printed applications. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

The high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines represent the prospective way for long-distance transmission between countries, remote areas, and offshore wind farms to decrease power loss. However, the HVDC protection systems have many challenges against any system issue, such as maintenance and short circuits. Thus, the vital role played by high voltage direct current circuit breaker CB has made it the center of attention in HVDC protection systems. The main challenge in HVDC CB is the lack of naturally exiting current zero that allows the breaker to extinguish the arc during the opening process. Thus, a commutation L-C circuit is required to inject an oscillating current and enforce a zero-crossing. Nevertheless, the L-C branch is affected directly by the arcing time, the transient recovery voltage (TRV), and the rate of rise of recovery voltage (RRRV). This paper investigates the parametric uncertainties of L-C and SF6 mechanical interrupters, including cooling power and arc time constant upon TRV and RRRV, based on Mayr's black-box model. Furthermore, a part of 3000 MVA, 500 kV HVDC transmission line between Egypt and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is used as a testing system employing ATP/EMTP software package to demonstrate the effect of CB's parameters variations. The results indicate that the capacitance represents the major parameter having a direct impact on TRV and RRRV. In essence, the proper parameterization of the CB is highly required in the design process of HVDC CB to enhance the decision-making and ensure that the L-C is capable of reducing arcing time and TRV simultaneously. © 2013 IEEE.
