This article explores the development and implementation of futuristic bins with automated waste sortation systems to address improper and mixed waste disposal challenges. Despite the existence of categorized waste bins, individuals often dispose of waste improperly, hindering the sorting and decomposition processes. Integrating advanced technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), futuristic bins offer innovative solutions. Futuristic bins with automated sorting systems facilitate accurate waste sorting, reduce mixing, and optimize waste disposal. These bins increase efficiency, reduce costs, and optimize collection routes while promoting environmental cleanliness and awareness of waste management. The article describes the research methodology, including preliminary study, specification requirements analysis, prototype development, and testing. The results demonstrate the implemented system's accuracy and real-time object detection capabilities. The study also acknowledges limitations and suggests future research directions, including improving communication between object detection algorithms and microcontrollers. Overall, the development of futuristic bins with automated waste sortation systems represents a significant advancement in waste management, with the potential to revolutionize waste management systems and create sustainable cities and communities. © 2024 IEEE.

Virtualization technologies are still growing bigger and faster. Despite the greatness of its advancement, the costume industry is still very accessible when it comes to real trials. Off-the-shelf stuff are inadequate details for the desired individual to assess its in-depth utility for each garment trying on for a second, including custom stuff are much harder to try out right away. To this end, 2D image-based 3D reconstruction inclusive of touchable-virtualized space is accessible easier to stuff details for mans' decision making in purchasing. We establish the overall end-to-end pipeline from reconstruction until visualization for one instance to be triable on its stuff for a moment. As an expectation, our proposed approach can bring objects into the experimental area and use them immediately without any obstacle. © 2023 IEEE.

White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are critical indicators of cerebral small vessel disease and are linked to stroke and cognitive decline. Accurate WHM segmentation is challenging due to limited contrast and small size, particularly for deep WMHs where T1-weighted and FLAIR MRI are routinely used. Image fusion offers a method to combine two modalities into one fused modality useful for WHM segmentation. We propose DeAFusion: Detail-Aware Image Fusion, a novel image fusion framework. This framework introduces a Pixel-wise Information Preservation Degree map to enable detailed control of fusion at the pixel level and incorporates segmentation loss to embed semantic information. Our model outperforms existing fusion methods in enhancing lesion visibility and preserving structural details, as demonstrated on both public and in-house datasets. DeAFusion shows promise for improving clinical assessments of WMHs. Our code is available at https://***/Gyeongdeok-Jo/DeAFusion. © 2024 IEEE.

Counterfactuals, or modified inputs that lead to a different outcome, are an important tool for understanding the logic used by machine learning classifiers and how to change an undesirable classification. Even if a counterfactual changes a classifier's decision, however, it may not affect the true underlying class probabilities, i.e. the counterfactual may act like an adversarial attack and "fool" the classifier. We propose a new framework for creating modified inputs that change the true underlying probabilities in a beneficial way which we call Trustworthy Actionable Perturbations (TAP). This includes a novel verification procedure to ensure that TAP change the true class probabilities instead of acting adversarially. Our framework also includes new cost, reward, and goal definitions that are better suited to effectuating change in the real world. We present PAC-learnability results for our verification procedure and theoretically analyze our new method for measuring reward. We also develop a methodology for creating TAP and compare our results to those achieved by previous counterfactual methods. Copyright 2024 by the author(s)

False data injection attacks (FDIAs) on smart power grids' measurement data present a threat to system stability. When malicious entities launch cyberattacks to manipulate the measurement data, different grid components will be affected, which leads to failures. For effective attack mitigation, two tasks are required: determining the status of the system (normal operation/under attack) and localizing the attacked bus/power substation. Existing mitigation techniques carry out these tasks separately and offer limited detection performance. In this paper, we propose a multi-Task learning-based approach that performs both tasks simultaneously using a graph neural network (GNN) with stacked convolutional Chebyshev graph layers. Our results show that the proposed model presents superior system status identification and attack localization abilities with detection rates of 98.5-100% and 99-100%, respectively, presenting improvements of 5-30% compared to benchmarks. © 2023 IEEE.

The use of long short-term memory models to estimate soybean pricing: a regional climate data evaluation from Brazil

This work uses machine learning methods to analyze the influence of the Brazilian climate on international soybean price variability. For this purpose, climatic data, historical series of the extended national consumer price index, dollar price historical series, soybean harvest historical series, and international soybean price historical series are collected from different data sources. The data is then preprocessed and grouped by state. Afterward, data from the five most productive Brazilian states, Mato Grosso (MT), Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), Goiás (GO), Paraná (PR), and Rio Grande do Sul (RS), which together correspond to 74.9% of total production, are chosen. Then, predictive models were built using the long short-term memory (LSTM) method, which is applied to each state dataset considering two different settings: with and without climatic data. Thus, two models were built for each Brazilian state, totaling ten predictors. These models are evaluated using 10-fold sequential split cross-validation, whose predictive results are used for performance comparison through statistical hypothesis testing. In the experimental evaluation, when trained with climatic data, the PR model achieved the lowest average values of root mean squared error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE), which are 20.90 and 16.72, respectively. Regarding predictors trained without climate data, the RS and PR obtained the lowest averaged values of RMSE (20.84) and MAE (16.81), respectively. After performing statistical hypothesis tests, no significant differences were found between the models, stating, with certainty 95%, that the Brazilian climatic data did not influence soybean prices in our study. © 2013 IEEE.

Despite the potential benefits that the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) can bring to the system, it may cause problems related to power quality constraints, such $as$ reverse power flow in substation and overvoltages. An effective approach to address these problems involves the adoption of reactive and active power control in grid-tie inverters associated with DER. Therefore, this paper assesses the impacts of grid-tie inverter control modes, including both Volt-Var and Volt-Watt strategies, on the DER hosting capacity. In order to improve the overall system operation, modifications in the Volt-Var and Volt-Watt curves were proposed. It is noteworthy that these control strategies can have adverse effects on certain distribution system performance indicators, such $as$ voltage deviation and power losses;for this reason, these indicators are also evaluated in this study. A stochastic approach was adopted to deal with the uncertainties associated with DERs and loads. Finally, from tests conducted in the IEEE 33-bus test system, it was concluded that the proper adjustment of the Volt-Var and Volt-Watt control curves significantly influences DER hosting capacity, $as$ well $as$ voltage deviation and power losses. © 2023 IEEE.

Dyslexia is a learning disability that negatively impacts an individual's ability to read, write, spell, and sometimes speak. It results in difficulties in recognizing and decoding words and patterns, despite normal level of education and intelligence. Studies have shown that early detection of dyslexia is vital for improving learning abilities in young children. Many virtual platforms exist for diagnosing and rehabilitating dyslexia; however, most require tests that measure reading skills. Since developing reading capabilities can delay the detection of dyslexia, a gaming platform based on Hebb-Williams mazes has been developed. This platform does not rely on reading skills and can diagnose dyslexia in young children. This paper presents a machine learning driven approach using two algorithms - Random Forest and Linear SVM - to classify reading abilities based on data from participants performing virtual maze tasks, which are indicative of symptoms of dyslexia. Results from this study indicate that it is possible to predict dyslexia with up to 95% accuracy based on a participant's performance in virtual gaming environments.

In neuroscience, informal notions of what it means to reverse engineer a system are commonly used, e.g., being able to simulate a system and/or predict its response. A recent work of Jonas & Kording examines a microprocessor using commonly used neuroscience techniques, and suggests that they are inadequate. Part of the difficulty, as a previous work of Lazebnik noted, lies in lack of formal language. Motivated by these papers, in this extended essay, we provide a theoretical framework for defining reverse engineering of computational systems for neuroscience contexts. Inspired by recent clinical efforts of localized interventions to alter the function of the neural circuitry to treat disorders, and by Lazebnik's viewpoint that understanding a system means you can “fix it”, we propose the following requirement on reverse engineering: once an agent claims to have reverse-engineered a neural circuit, they subsequently need to be able to: (a) provide a minimal set of interventions to change the input/output (I/O) behavior of the circuit to a desired behavior; (b) arrive at this minimal set of interventions while operating under some constraints, e.g. limited memory, or access to only observations of the system, etc. to rule out brute-force approaches. We show that, under certain assumptions, this reverse engineering goal falls within the class of undecidable problems, by connecting our problem with Rice's theorem in theoretical computer science. Next, we examine some canonical computational systems and reverse engineering goals (as specified by desired I/O behaviors) where reverse engineering can indeed be performed. In complementary works, we examine how information-theoretic approaches can provide insights into the problem.

Boost DC-DC Converter with Non-dissipative Snubber

To provide a hold-up time function in DC-DC supplies for cell site stations or data centers, using a boost converter with a bulk output capacitor as a front-end converter stage is a simple and highly cost-effective solution. However, conventional boost converters with a hard-switching operation result in low conversion efficiency and increased electromagnetic interference emissions. In this paper, a boost converter with a new non-dissipative snubber is proposed that only requires two additional diodes, an inductor, and a multilayer ceramic capacitor. The main feature of the proposed snubber is that the components are not located on the main power processing path. This means they only require low ratings, improving cost-effectiveness. A prototype converter is analyzed, realized, and applied to a 300 W redundant DC-DC power supply module for a 5G cell base station. © 2024 The Author(s).
