Genetic Algorithm Augmented Inception-Net based Image Classifier Accelerated on FPGA

Deep learning models for computer vision applications specifically and for machine learning generally are now the state of the art. The growth of size and complexity of neural networks has made them more and more reliable, yet in greater need of computational power and memory as is evident from the heavy reliance on graphical processing units and cloud computing for training them. As the complexity of deep neural networks increases, the need for fast processing neural networks in real-time embedded applications at the edge also increases and accelerating them using reconfigurable hardware suggests a solution. In this work, a convolutional neural network based on the inception net architecture is first optimized in software and then accelerated by taking advantage of field programmable gate array (FPGA) parallelism. Genetic algorithm augmented training is proposed and used on the neural network to produce an optimum model from the first training run without re-training iterations. Quantization of the network parameters is performed according to the weights of the network. The resulting neural network is then transformed into hardware by writing the register transfer level (RTL) code for FPGAs with exploitation of layer parallelism and a simple trial-and-error allocation of resources with the help of the roofline model. The approach is simple and easy to use as compared to many complex existing methods in literature and relies on trial and error to customize the FPGA design to the model needed to work on any computer vision or multimedia application deep learning model. Simulation and synthesis are performed. The results prove that the genetic algorithm reduces the number of back-propagation epochs in software and brings the network closer to the global optimum in terms of performance. In this work, a dynamic weighting-artificial neural network (DW-ANN) methodology is presented for quick and automated compact model (CM) generation. It takes advantage of both TCAD simulations for high accuracy and SPICE simulations for cost-effectiveness. This methodology is developed for gate-all-around (GAA) silicon (Si) nanosheet (NS) complementary field effect transistor (CFET), a potential candidate for future CMOS technology due to its innate properties. The critical process variation (PV) sources that severely degrade the CFET performance are estimated using DW-ANN. It reduces the computation cost and predicts the effects of PV sources with less than 1% error. Furthermore, a compact DW-ANN-based Verilog-A model has been developed that captures the dc as well as transient behavior accurately for circuit-level analysis. CFET-based circuits such as inverter, 6T-static random access memory (SRAM), and ring oscillator (RO) are characterized and implemented using DW-ANN-based CM. The overall average error of the model is reported as less than 2%. Therefore, the proposed device and circuit modeling approach provides a feasible solution for the rapid compact modeling of new emerging devices with good convergence and high accuracy. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Radio Dynamic Zones (RDZs) are being explored by the research community as an approach to safely test and evaluate spectrum sharing mechanisms and technologies. There is general consensus in the research community regarding the conceptual architecture of an RDZ. In this paper, we present our work on the, a prototype RDZ developed and built on the platform. We present a practical RDZ architecture and explore a number of end-to-end use-cases. In the current academic environment, the increasing prevalence of stress among students has become a critical concern, significantly affecting both mental health and academic outcomes. Factors such as heavy academic workloads, interpersonal conflicts, financial challenges, and societal pressures contribute to cognitive impairments, procrastination, and declining academic performance. Unaddressed, this stress can escalate into severe mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and self-harming tendencies, with marginalized or overwhelmed students being particularly vulnerable. Familial expectations, financial instability, imposter syndrome, fear of missing out, cyberbullying, and unsupportive institutional cultures further intensify these challenges. While mental health support mechanisms exist within institutions, they often remain reactive, addressing issues only after they manifest. To address this growing crisis, a shift toward proactive measures is essential, encompassing counseling, meditation, peer support systems, and engagement in extracurricular activities to foster emotional resilience. A holistic and preventative approach that emphasizes early intervention, open communication, and supportive academic environments is imperative to promote students' well-being and academic success. © 1988-2012 IEEE.

As multi-core systems continue to grow in complexity, Network-on-Chip (NoC) architectures have emerged as a scalable and efficient solution for managing on-chip communication. However, ensuring reliable communication in the presence of router faults remains a critical challenge, particularly for applications in safety-critical systems where failure can lead to catastrophic consequences. This paper proposes a novel fault-tolerant NoC architecture designed to improve reliability in multi-core systems. The proposed method divides the NoC into multiple regions, each managed by a dedicated Region Router (RR) and interconnected via a Centralized Router (CR). This hierarchical structure ensures that even in the presence of multiple faulty routers, data packets can be rerouted effectively, maintaining system functionality. We implement the proposed method on a Xilinx Virtex-7 FPGA and evaluate its performance in terms of latency, throughput, power consumption, and resource utilization. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a 15% improvement in system reliability with only a 3.2% increase in resource utilization, compared to the baseline NoC. Additionally, Mean Time to Failure (MTTF) is extended by 25%, while the latency remains within an acceptable range of 3.2 ns. These findings highlight the potential of our approach for use in safety-critical and high-performance computing systems, offering enhanced fault tolerance without significantly compromising performance. © 2024 IEEE.

Transaction transmission model for blockchain channels based on non-cooperative games

In blockchain networks, transactions can be transmitted through channels. The existing transmission methods depend on their routing information. If a node randomly chooses a channel to transmit a transaction, the transmission may be aborted due to insufficient funds(also called balance) or a low transmission rate. To increase the success rate and reduce transmission delay across all transactions, this work proposes a transaction transmission model for blockchain channels based on non-cooperative game *** balance, channel states, and transmission probability are fully considered. This work then presents an optimized channel transaction transmission algorithm. First, channel balances are analyzed and suitable channels are selected if their balance is sufficient. Second, a Nash equilibrium point is found by using an iterative sub-gradient method and its related channels are then used to transmit transactions. The proposed method is compared with two state-of-the-art approaches: Silent Whispers and Speedy Murmurs. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves transmission success rate, reduces transmission delay,and effectively decreases transmission overhead in comparison with its two competitive peers.

Cyberbullying is a severe issue that impacts teens and adults alike. Errors like hopelessness and suicide have resulted from it. The demand for material on social media platforms to be regulated is growing. In the work that follows, machine learning and natural language processing are used to construct a model to identify cyberbullying in text data. The program leverages data from two different types of cyberbullying: personal attacks on Wikipedia forums and tweets containing hate speech. To determine the optimal approach, three feature extraction techniques and four classifiers are examined. The method produces more than 80% accurate data from Wikipedia and more than 90% correct data from Twitter. © 2024 IEEE.

In addressing labor-intensive process of manual plant disease detection, this article introduces an innovative solution—the lightweight parallel depthwise separable convolutional neural network (PDSCNN) coupled with a hybrid ridge regression extreme learning machine classifier. This combined approach automates plant disease classification, significantly expediting the learning process and reducing computational complexity. The PDSCNN model excels in feature capture, boasting a mere 9 layers and 0.053 million parameters, resulting in exceptional computational efficiency. On top of that, the classification performances of traditional ELM increased by introducing a hybrid ridge ELM model. Its accelerated operations, reduced memory usage, and optimized parallel processing render it lightweight and ideal for edge devices. The proposed framework exhibits remarkable efficacy, showcasing a precision of 95.76%, a recall of 89.29%, an F1-score of 91.25%, an accuracy of 94.22%, and an AUC of 99.72%. Moreover, training and testing times clock in at just 0.2314 and 0.0259 s, respectively. A comparative analysis against state-of-the-art transfer learning methods underscores its real-time analytical prowess. To demonstrate real-world applicability, we successfully validated our model on the Jetson Nano hardware, making it suitable for resource-constrained settings. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.
