Lead halide perovskites (MAPbX3) have emerged as promising materials for photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices. However, their exceptional nonlinear properties have not been fully exploited in nanophotonics yet. Herein we fabricateMAPbX3 perovskite metasurfaces and explore their internal nonlinear processes. While both of third-order harmonic generation (THG) and three-photon luminescence are generated, the latter one is less affected by the material loss and has been significantly enhanced by a factor of 60. The corresponding simulation reveals that the improvement is caused by the resonant enhancement of incident laser in perovskite metasurface. Interestingly, such kind of resonance-enhanced three-photon luminescence holds true for metasurfaces with a small period number of 4, enabling new applications of perovskite metasurface in high-resolution nonlinear color nanoprinting and optical encoding. The encoded information "NANO" is visible only when the incident laser is on-resonance. The off-resonance pumping and the single-photon excitation just produce a uniform dark or photoluminescence background. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The continuous visual tracking of activity performed in perception and action activities requires continuous eye motion. The visual computer monitoring, recording and evaluation of human motion provides many opportunities in the development of human-computer interfaces. In most activities performed by humans, eye-hand coordination plays a significant role. From the eye-hand coordination aspect, the fixation's direction is an essential factor, since before touching an object, the look is aimed at the object to be touched for a longer period. In this paper, the fixation playing a major role in eye-hand coordination is being analyzed during the Trail Making Test. The test primarily aims to measure visual searching or scanning, visual-spatial sequencing; however, the eye-hand coordination's speed plays a key role in the quick and accurate execution of the test. During the test, eye motion parameters were recorded and determined, where further analyses make certain human cognitive factors indirectly able to be analyzed.

The state features available to a robot define the variables on which the learning computation depends. However, little prior work considers feature selection in the context of deploying a general-purpose robot able to learn new tasks. In this work, we explore human-driven feature selection in which a robotic agent can identify useful features with the aid of a human user, by extracting information from users about which features are most informative for discriminating between classes of objects needed for a given task (e.g. sorting groceries). The research questions examine (a) whether a domain expert is able to identify a subset of informative task features, (b) whether human selected features will enable the agent to classify unseen examples as accurately as using computational feature selection, and (c) if the interaction strategy used to elicit the information from the user impacts the quality of resulting feature selection. Toward that end, we conducted a user study with 30 participants on campus, given a multi-class classification task and one of five different approaches for conveying information about informative features to a robot learner. Our findings show that when features are semantically interpretable, human feature selection is effective in LfD scenarios because it is able to outperform computational methods when there is limited training data, yet still remains on-par with computational methods as the training sample size increases.

Although an accurate evaluation of the distribution of ultrafine particulate matter in air is of utmost significance to public health,the usually used PM2.5 index fails to provide size distribution *** we demonstrate a low-profile and cavity-free size spectrometer for probing fine and ultrafine particulate matter by using the enhanced particle-perturbed scattering in strong optical evanescent fields of a nanofiber *** unprecedented size resolution reaches 10 nm for detecting single 100-nm-diameter nanoparticles by employing uniform nanofibers and controlling the polarizations of the probe *** size spectrometry was tested and used to retrieve the size distribution of particulate matter in the air of Beijing,yielding mass concentrations of nanoparticles,as a secondary exercise,consistent with the officially released *** nanofiber-array probe shows potential for the full monitoring of air pollution and for studying early-stage haze evolution and can be further extended to explore nanoparticle interactions.

Precise actuation of continuum surfaces in combination with continuum robotic arms that undergo large deformation is of high interest in soft robotics but of limited model-based study to date. This work develops this area towards enabling the robust design and control of large deformation continuum surfaces (LDCS) across multiple industrial applications in the healthcare, aerospace, manufacturing, and automotive domains. It introduces an actuation based dynamic model of LDCSs to accurately determine their deflection due to application of concentrated external forces while maintaining many physical characteristics and constraints on actuation elements and surface structure such as gravity, inertia, damping, elasticity, and interactive forces between actuators and LDCS. Using the lumped-mass methodology, a 3D integrated surface-arm model is developed, simulated and then validated experimentally where a pair of parallel arms are attached to the surface to actuate and deform it. The surface is then simultaneously subjected to a concentrated constant external force at its top center between the two arms. Comparing measured displacements between the experimental and modelling results over actuation time yielded the maximum error is less than 1% of the length of the surface's side at its final deflected profile despite the limited number of nodes (masses) used in the LDCS model while it is exposed to a significant external force. © 2018 IEEE.

The aim of this study is to view product traceability using graph-based simulation software, which gives us a cognitive map of a product's path. In this paper, we present a method for manufacturers to efficiently and automatically visualize all components of their products, allowing for multiple changes or fault event in the supply chain.

One commonly used measure of lexical sophistication is the Advanced Guiraud (AG;[9]), whose formula requires frequency band counts (e.g., COCA;[13]). However, the accuracy of this measure is affected by the particular 2000-word frequency list selected as the basis for its calculations [27]. For example, possible issues arise when frequency lists that are based solely on native speaker corpora are used as a target for second language (L2) learners (e.g., [8]) because the exposure frequencies for L2 learners may vary from that of native speakers. Such L2 variation from comparable native speakers may be due to first language (L1) culture, home country teaching materials, or the text types which L2 learners commonly encounter. This paper addresses the aforementioned problem through an English as a Second Language (ESL) frequency list validation. Our validation is established on two sources: (1) the New General Service List (NGSL;[4]) which is based on the Cambridge English Corpus (CEC) and (2) written data from the 4.2 million-word Pitt English Language Institute Corpus (PELIC). Using open-source data science tools and natural language processing technologies, the paper demonstrates that more distinct measurable lexical sophistication differences across levels are discernible when learner-oriented frequency lists (as compared to general corpora frequency lists) are used as part of a lexical measure such as AG. The results from this research will be useful in teaching contexts where lexical proficiency is measured or assessed, and for materials and test developers who rely on such lists as being representative of known vocabulary at different levels of proficiency. This research applies data-driven exploration of learner corpora to vocabulary acquisition and pedagogy, thus closing a loop between educational data mining and classroom applications. © 2018 International Educational Data Mining Society. Augmented reality devices are opening up a new design space for immersive visualizations. 3D spatial content can be overlaid onto existing physical visualizations for new insights into the data. We present Coordinate, a collaborative analysis tool for augmented reality visualizations of map-based data designed for mobile devices. Coordinate leverages a spreadsheet-programmable web interface paired with a contemporary augmented reality infrastructure for an easy-to-use tool that can provide spatial information to multiple users. It also offers an immersive visualization experience that seeks to enrich presentations for business, educational, and scientific discussions.

In this paper, we propose a novel zero-forcing (ZF)-based beamforming (BF) scheme for a wireless powered cognitive satellite-terrestrial network (CSTN) operated in the millimeter wave band. Assuming that the satellite and base station are equipped with multiple antennas, we aim at maximizing the sum rate of the CSTN while satisfying the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio requirements for both the information receivers (IRs) and earth stations, the energy harvesting requirements of the energy receivers (ERs), and the secrecy constraints at the ERs. Since the resulting optimization problem is mathematically intractable, we propose a novel multi-beam-based ZF BF scheme to generate beamforming vectors to serve the IRs and ERs. Specifically, the original nonconvex problem is decomposed into two independent subproblems. The first subproblem, which features beam orthogonality constraints, leads to closed form solutions for the beamforming vectors. The second subproblem, aiming at finding the optimal power allocation, is solved via the S-procedure. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by simulation results.

The Illinois Express Quantum Network (IEQNET) is a program to realize metro-scale quantum networking over deployed optical fiber using currently available technology. IEQNET consists of multiple sites that are geographically dispersed in the Chicago metropolitan area. Each site has one or more quantum nodes (Q-nodes) representing the communication parties in a quantum network. Q-nodes generate or measure quantum signals such as entangled photons and communicate the results via standard, classical, means. The entangled photons in IEQNET nodes are generated at multiple wavelengths, and are selectively distributed to the desired users via optical switches. Here we describe the network architecture of IEQNET, including the Internet-inspired layered hierarchy that leverages software-defined-networking (SDN) technology to perform traditional wavelength routing and assignment between the Q-nodes. Specifically, SDN decouples the control and data planes, with the control plane being entirely classical. Issues associated with synchronization, calibration, network monitoring, and scheduling will be discussed. An important goal of IEQNET is demonstrating the extent to which the control plane can coexist with the data plane using the same fiber lines. This goal is furthered by the use of tunable narrow-band optical filtering at the receivers and, at least in some cases, a wide wavelength separation between the quantum and classical channels. We envision IEQNET to aid in developing robust and practical quantum networks by demonstrating metro-scale quantum communication tasks such as entanglement distribution and quantum-state teleportation. © 2021, CC BY.
