Foresting demand for electrical power is essential for energy sector because it promotes efficient use of resources, a steady electricity supply, and grid stability. Effective electricity demand forecasting is essential for calculating day-ahead and current energy pricing too. The impact of several non-linear factors, such as calendar elements, seasonal patterns, and weather conditions play a crucial role in influencing electricity power demand. To predict the demand accurately based on time series data, it is important to employ effective statistical methods that can account for the influencing factors of electricity demand. In this research, we developed statistical models that could forecast future electricity demand using seven years of time series data. The seasonal and trend components of the available dataset employ Triple Exponential Smoothing (Holt-Winters) and Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA). The accuracy of forecasting is measured using Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) matrix. The findings of this research work indicate that the Holt-Winters Exponential Smoothing technique, utilizing additive trend and additive seasonality based on the data type, is a suitable method for electricity demand forecasting since it yields the lowest MAPE value. Even though the data used to construct the model is specific to Thailand, the approach is universally applicable and can be used for predicting future electricity demand in any other context. © 2023 IEEE.

An optical slot-antenna-coupled cavity (SAC) framework towards tunable free-space graphene photonic surfaces

The optical conductivity of single layer graphene (SLG) can be significantly and reversibly modified when the Fermi level is tuned by electrical gating. However, so far this interesting property has rarely been applied to free-space two-dimensional (2D) photonic devices because the surface-incident absolute absorption of SLG is limited to 1%–2%. No significant change in either reflectance or transmittance would be observed even if SLG is made transparent upon gating. To achieve significantly enhanced surface-incident optical absorption in SLG in a device structure that also allows gating, here we embed SLG in an optical slot-antenna-coupled cavity (SAC) framework, simultaneously enhancing SLG absorption by up to 20 times and potentially enabling electrical gating of SLG as a step towards tunable 2D photonic surfaces. This framework synergistically integrates near-field enhancement induced by ultrahigh refractive index semimetal slot-antenna with broadband resonances in visible and infrared regimes, ~ 3 times more effective than a vertical cavity structure alone. An example of this framework consists of self-assembled, close-packed Sn nanodots separated by ~ 10 nm nanogaps on a SLG/SiO2/Al stack, which dramatically increases SLG optical absorption to 10%-25% at λ = 600–1,900 nm. The enhanced SLG absorption spectrum can also be controlled by the insulator thickness. For example, SLG embedded in this framework with a 150 nm-thick SiO2 insulating layer displays a distinctive red color in contrast to its surrounding regions without SLG on the same sample under white light illumination. This opens a potential path towards gate-tunable spectral reflectors. Overall, this work initiates a new approach towards tunable 2D photonic surfaces.

This paper deals with the development of a numerical model in COMSOL Multiphysics software in order to test the breakdown behavior of a vegetable insulating oil and two ester-based nanofluids under Lightning Impulse Voltage (LIV) in correspondence to experimental findings. The two nanofluids contain SiC nanoparticles in two weight percentage ratios. The simulation results are compared to experimental ones after being conducted in accordance with IEC 60897. The comparison proves that the increase in nanoparticles' concentration should lead to improvement of LI BDV, which is not verified from the experimental results, probably due to the influence of rapid agglomeration regarding the higher concentration, which cannot be taken into account in the numerical model. © 2022 IEEE.

With the increasing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs), drivers want their vehicle batteries to be charged in a few minutes; at present, this is feasible only if battery service stations replace the EV battery pack with a fully charged battery pack. In this paper, we formulate the scheduling problem for battery swap stations, aiming to provide the drivers timing guarantees for different types of EVs, each with its own sporadic/periodic arrival pattern and deadline constraint. To solve this problem, we analyze its unique characteristics from a real-time scheduling perspective, with the main challenge being the circular timing dependency between two distinct scheduling processes: the swapping operation and the charging operation. We first derive a sufficient condition that decouples the dependency and then develop scheduling policies and timing guarantee techniques, designed for not only being specialized for the problem but also accommodating the sufficient condition in a time-predictable and resource-efficient manner. While the problem formulation and solution hold significance as the first attempt to establish real-time scheduling principles for battery swap stations, we also address how to accommodate real-world EV arrivals at a swapping station that do not necessarily follow a sporadic/periodic pattern. Finally, we evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed principles not only in addressing the formulated problem but also in accommodating real-world EV arrival patterns via simulation and a case study.

Many spinal operations are performed using fluoroscopic guidance due to its excellent visualization of osseous structures and surgical instrumentation in real-time, however, its efficacy is conditional on accurate needle placement. Image-guided surgical navigation systems allow for intraoperative and continuous localization of surgical tools with respect to patient anatomy, leading to significantly improved needle placement accuracy. Magnetic navigation systems require a field generator (FG) whose placement must be near the patient and may partially obstruct the x-ray beam, causing image artifacts and degraded image quality. Northern Digital Inc. has developed a radiolucent FG (RLFG) prototype to reduce image artifacts, however, the X-ray photon scatter interactions from the RLFG may reduce image contrast, add noise and decrease spatial resolution. These scatter interactions can be assessed in terms of the scatter-to-primary ratio (SPR) and its effect on image quality can be described using the modulation transfer function (MTF) and the generalized detective quantum efficiency (DQE). SPR measurements of a 20 cm water phantom and surgical table were taken with and without the RLFG using a slanted-edge technique as described by Garland and Cunningham, as well as the SPR measurements of the isolated RLFG and isolated water phantom. MTF and generalized DQE measurements of the imaging system were taken with and without the RLFG using the commercially available DQEPro (DQE Instruments, Ontario, Canada). SPR measurments demonstrated an 8 % average increase when the RLFG was added underneath the surgical table, and the SPR of the water phantom was on average 5 times larger than the SPR of the RLFG. Therefore, the photon scatter interactions within the RLFG would likely cause minimal image quality deterioration, especially in comparison to a patient-representing water phantom. The current technology employed for autonomous driving has provided us with satisfactory performance and results. However, some of the most commonly used sensors, such as LiDAR and cameras, are typically high-priced and often require tremendous amount of computational power to process the collected data. In many cases, the adverse weather and night-time conditions hinder the performance of vision-based sensors. In this paper, we propose an alternative approach for enhancing the current sensing methodologies by utilizing acoustic signatures of moving objects. This approach makes use of a microphone array to collect and process acoustic signatures captured for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). Rather than using numerous sensors to gather information of the surrounding environment of the ego vehicle, this method investigates the benefits of considering the sound waves of different objects around the ego vehicle and offers a cost-effective approach for SLAM.

MTrain: Enable Efficient CNN Training on Heterogeneous FPGA-Based Edge Servers

FPGA-based edge servers are used in many applications in smart cities, hospitals, retail, etc. Equipped with heterogeneous FPGA-based accelerator cards, the servers can be implemented with multiple tasks including efficient video prepossessing, machine learning algorithm acceleration, etc. These servers are required to implement inference during the daytime while re-training the model during the night to adapt to new environments, domains, or new users. During the re-training, conventionally, the incoming data are transmitted to the cloud, and then the updated machine learning models will be transferred back to the edge server. Such a process is inefficient and cannot protect users' privacy, so it is desirable for the models to be directly trained on the edge servers. Deploying convolutional neural network (CNN) training on heterogeneous resource-constrained FPGAs is challenging since it needs to consider both the complex data dependency of the training process and the communication bottleneck among different FPGAs. Previous multi-accelerator training algorithms select optimal scheduling strategies for data parallelism, tensor parallelism, and pipeline parallelism. However, pipeline parallelism cannot deal with batch normalization (BN) which is an essential CNN operator, while purely applying data parallelism and tensor parallelism suffers from resource under-utilization and intensive communication costs. In this work, we propose MTrain, a novel multi-accelerator training scheduling strategy that transfers the training process into a multi-branch workflow, thus independent sub-operations of different branches are executed on different training accelerators in parallelism for better utilization and reduced communication overhead. Experimental results show that we can achieve efficient CNN training on heterogeneous FPGA-based edge servers with 1.07x-2.21x speedup under 15 GB/s peer-to-peer bandwidth compared to the state-of-the-art work. © 2025 IEEE.

In order to curb the rapid spread of COVID-19, early and accurate detection is required. computer Tomography (CT) scans of the lungs can be utilized for accurate COVID-19 detection because these medical images highlight COVID-19 infection with high sensitivity. Transfer learning was implemented on six state-of-the-art Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). From these six CNNs, the three with the highest accuracies (based on empirical experiments) were selected and used as base learners to produce hard voting and soft voting ensemble classifiers. These three CNNs were identified as Vgg16, EfficientNetB0 and EfficientNetB5. This study concludes that the soft voting ensemble classifier, with base learners Vgg16 and EfficientNetB5, outperformed all other ensemble classifiers with different base learners and individual models that were investigated. The proposed classifier achieved a new state-of-the-art accuracy on the SARS-CoV-2 dataset. The accuracy obtained from this framework was 98.13%, the recall was 98.94%, the precision was 97.40%, the specificity was 97.30% and the F1 score was 98.16%. © 2023, ICST Institute for computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering.
