Contactless Rejuvenation of Slippery Lubricant-Infused Surfaces

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have demonstrated immense potential for a plethora of applications. While SLIPSs hold great promise for enhancing energy efficiency in thermoelectric and organic Rankine cycle power generation via improved vapor condensation, their application is hindered by inadequate durability. SLIPSs lose their omniphobicity during steam or hydrocarbon condensation due to the depletion of the infused oil with the condensate shedding from the surface. Although SLIPSs employing high-viscosity lubricants can last longer, the eventual loss of slipperiness is inevitable. Here, we demonstrate a contactless spray method to rejuvenate SLIPSs. We study the degradation of SLIPSs fabricated by infusing different viscosity oils and then replenish degraded samples by spraying the respective oils. By conducting a second round of condensation durability tests and heat transfer performance comparisons of the rejuvenated surfaces, we show similar behavior of the rejuvenated surfaces as the freshly prepared SLIPSs. To demonstrate the feasibility of the spray method in a practical scenario, we study the durability of a prototype heat exchanger and show similar performance of the rejuvenated SLIPS heat exchanger as a fresh SLIPS heat exchanger fabricated using traditional dip-coating methods. Our spraying method is independent of physical contact during replenishment and offers a scalable solution for large industrial applications of SLIPSs. © 2025 American Chemical Society.

Resilient Cooperative Control of Multiple DC Microgrids With Interconnection Networks Against Cyber Attacks

The two control objectives of voltage regulation and precise current sharing are conflicting in multi-bus DC microgrids. In this paper, a distributed control strategy is proposed, and it can achieve accurate current sharing and regulate the voltage of a critical node to the rated value. However, such a distributed control system is susceptible to potential cyber attacks that could deteriorate microgrids performances by corrupting communication links or actuators. To overcome these difficulties, we design the interconnected communication networks to establish a resilient cooperative system of multiple microgrids against unknown bounded injection attacks. The proposed resilient control strategy can achieve the control objectives of maintaining voltage regulation and current sharing within each microgrids under different operating conditions, and the interconnected system consisting of multiple microgrids cooperates to mitigate the adverse effect of cyber attacks. The dynamics and stability of the overall close-loop system of the DC microgrids are analyzed, in the present or absent of cyber attacks. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in two 4-bus DC microgrids. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper investigates the downlink channel estimation problem for frequency division duplex (FDD) multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We model this problem within the sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) framework, where all unknowns are treated as random variables. Due to limited scattering at the base station, the channel exhibits sparsity in the angular domain. By introducing Gaussian mixture priors to characterize the user equipment internal sparsity and partially shared sparsity, we develop a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method to implement Bayesian inference and accurately estimate all random variables in the model, including the channel matrix. Experimental results demonstrate that the MCMC-based SBL channel estimation algorithm outperforms existing approaches by over 5 dB in multi-user scenarios while reducing pilot overhead.

Accurately time-aligned spectral targets are essential for training electrocorticographic (ECoG) brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) intended for real-time speech output. This alignment is particularly challenging with "silent speech," in which speech occurs without phonation, or in the extreme, without articulation. Crafting suitably precise targets for silent speech is complex and error-prone due to multiple sources of temporal imprecision. We investigated how these temporal inaccuracies impact deep neural network performance in synthesizing speech from a BCI clinical trial participant who retained some speech capability. By simulating silent speech conditions through distortions in known acoustic target timings, we observed significant performance degradations at both phonetic and syllabic timescales. Accuracy-based measures offered a more reliable assessment of intelligibility than traditional metrics like the short-time objective intelligibility index, which may overestimate performance in low-precision contexts. These results underscore the need for advanced alignment techniques with precise phonetic and syllabic guarantees for silent speech BCIs focused on providing immediate output.

Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets) leverage multiple communication interfaces (e.g., Wi-Fi, cellular, Bluetooth) seamlessly integrated to enhance connectivity and capacity across diverse environments. These capabilities can be advantageous for covert communication, where the objective is to ensure undetectable transmission in the presence of an adversary. This work investigates optimal power allocation strategies for covert communication within HetNets under maximum power constraints. We propose a polynomial-time (m 2 ) algorithm for optimal link configuration by allocating power across multiple modes. Next, we address network-level covertness by allocating the end-to-end covertness constraint across links in a two-hop system that maximizes throughput. Leveraging the link configuration approach, we derive the optimal power allocation for each mode and link, ensuring the overall transmission remains undetectable. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms existing single-link and two-hop approaches, achieving higher efficiency and security in covert communication across HetNets.

Remote entangling gates for spin qubits in quantum dots using a charge-sensitive superconducting coupler

We propose a method to realize microwave-activated cz gates between two remote spin qubits in quantum dots using a charge-sensitive superconducting coupler. The qubits are longitudinally coupled to the coupler, such that the transition frequency of the coupler depends on the logical qubit states; a capacitive network model using first-quantized charge operators is developed to illustrate this. Driving the coupler transition then implements a conditional phase shift on the qubits. Two pulsing schemes are investigated: a rapid, off-resonant pulse with constant amplitude, and a pulse with envelope engineering that incorporates dynamical decoupling to mitigate charge noise. We develop non-Markovian time-domain simulations to accurately model gate performance in the presence of 1/fβ charge noise. Simulation results indicate that a cz gate fidelity exceeding 90% is possible with realistic parameters and noise models.

As space exploration advances, an increasing number of planets are becoming targets for landing missions. Before officially launching a lander, it is essential to conduct landing tests on Earth to verify the functionality of the lander. One key challenge is to simulate the target planet's gravity environment during the lander's descent. In this study, a large-scale gravity compensation system is developed to physically simulate the Martian gravity for the landing tests of a Mars lander. The system integrates a constant force mechanism and electronic control systems, working closely to ensure smooth transitions between working states during the landing tests. Based on the principle of minimum potential energy, an expression for the output force of the constant force mechanism is established, and the influence of factors such as mechanical parameters on the output force is analyzed. Experimental results show that the system can provide gravity compensation for a 720-kg Mars lander. It maintains a nearly constant output force even when the lander touches the ground and during the subsequent period, demonstrating its adaptability to transient collisions and sudden state changes. © 1965-2011 IEEE.

This paper investigates the design of distributed observers for a class of nonlinear systems. The designed distributed observers reside in a network of sensor nodes. The communication links in the network enable each sensor node to estimate all states of the nonlinear system, even though each one can only collect a small portion of the system's outputs. However, all inputs of the system are still needed at each node to carry out a correct state estimation. For this problem, the paper further proposes a distributed nonlinear observer without using global inputs, in which each sensor node only needs partial input information of the nonlinear system. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

As a recently proposed reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) architecture, active RIS has drawn considerable interest. The important feature of the active RIS is its ability to strengthen the impinging signals to mitigate the multiplicative fading effect inherent in passive RIS-aided systems. Herein, we explore the performance of an active RIS-aided uplink multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, considering the phase noise at the RIS. Furthermore, a two-timescale scheme is utilized, where the base station (BS) beamforming is designed based on the instantaneous aggregated channel state information (CSI), while the statistical CSI is used for designing the phase shifts of the active RIS. In addition, the linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) estimator is adopted to estimate the aggregated channel, which combines both the cascaded and direct channels. According to the estimated channel, a closedform expression for the lower bound of achievable rate is derived. Based on the theoretical expressions, the power scaling laws for the considered system are also investigated. Specifically, when each user’s transmit power is proportionally reduced by the quantity of BS antennas M or RIS elements N, we find that the amplified thermal noise causes the lower bound of the achievable rate to approach zero as M or N tends to infinity. Moreover, an optimization approach based on a genetic algorithm (GA) is introduced to obtain the optimal phase shifts for maximizing the achievable rate. Numerical results reveal that the active RIS can greatly enhance the performance of the massive MIMO system compared to its passive counterpart. © 2002-2012 IEEE.
